Review “Doing the Right Thing” in Chapter 5. Governmental Planning Takes Diverse Forms. A partial list of large-scale governmental planning activities would have to include at least the following: (1) planning for the conservation and use of natural resources, (2) city planning, (3) planning for full employment, (4) planning for personal and family security, (5) planning for agriculture, and (6) planning for the improvement of government organization. Provide one example from the case that addresses one of the five planning activities. Explain the lessons you discovered in this case that could create additional planning activities.

Review “Robin Hood” in Chapter 5. The story stated that the source of revenue (the rich) was dwindling because the rich were avoiding the forest. Robin considered increasing revenue by assessing a fixed transit tax. Recommend a contingency plan to increase revenue that would allow Robin Hood to stay true to his mission. Comment on the use and importance of contingency plans by public administrators. Provide an example to illustrate.

For this and the following assignments, which will become a major part of your portfolio, you will take on the role of a consultant for a government agency. The first role of the consultant is to familiarize yourself with the agency, its departments, and key actors. Select a local, county, state, or federal agency and a department within the agency. After selecting an agency and department, you are expected to:

Provide a rationale for your selection, and research the agency and department.

Interview at least two (2) representatives of the agency’s department for the different sections of the paper. (If you can obtain more than two (2) different interviews, do so. Research the literature regarding issues that involve the selected agency and public administration in general.

Research has identified that representations of psychological illness in the media shapes perceptions of real-life people struggling with psychological health problems. These representations, while frequently inaccurate or misrepresentative of true psychological illness, are often the only exposure to these issues many people ever get. Many of these representations may perpetuate harmful views of psychological illness and fuel stigma.

Examples include portrayals of people with mental illnesses as criminals or violent, as somehow looking different from others, as childish, silly, or weak. Other negative stereotypes may include portrayal of all mental illnesses as severe or all alike, might depict psychiatric hospitals as causing more harm than good, or psychological treatment as vague and ineffective. They may indicate that people with mental illness cannot recover.

However, recent efforts and campaigns have pushed for more accurate representations of psychological illness. While there is still a tremendous amount of work to be done, journalists and screenwriters are working towards impelling more realistic, respectful and humanizing representations of psychological illness.

In this assignment, you will select a character represented in some form of media and conduct a critique of their representation.

Character Selection: Your character may be pulled from any form of media (TV, movies, books, cartoons, etc). You may use a character that is intentionally represented as having a diagnosed psychological illness (examples: Carrie Mathison from “Homeland”, John Nash in “A Beautiful Mind”). You are also welcome to select a character that is demonstrating symptoms or abnormal behavior that might be a disorder, that is not necessarily being represented as having a diagnosed psychological illness (examples. Elsa from Disney’s “Frozen”, Winnie the Pooh, Sheldon from “The Big Bang Theory”, Howard from “Collateral Beauty”) and discuss these concerns. My question is two parts about leading in the management role. What leadership qualities do you believe a manager should have? Do you think those qualities can be taught to junior level managers?
