Creating A Guiding Coalition”

Please respond to one (1) of the following:

Read the article titled “Leading Change in Libraries: A Case Study”. Reflect on your academic career thus far. The decision to continue your formal education was a change that you implemented in your personal life. Whom did you place on your list as a guiding coalition and why? (Note: You do not have to list individual names. Substitute names for titles or positions are advised.)
It is important to build a guiding coalition for your change. Review the article titled “Creating Cultural Change in a 115-Year-Old R&D Organization”. How did the organization create a guiding coalition? Think about the change you are developing in your extended project. How will you create a guiding coalition? Who will you need to engage to ensure the change is successful? Why is it important for you to make them a part of your guiding coalition?

Competitive Advantage

You have learned a lot about strategic planning and the importance of having great communication between departments and sharing information using systems and processes agreed upon by the management team of a company. The ability to plan and communicate is a competency businesses look for when hiring.

To assist you in the development of this competency, you will build a strategic plan for a fictitious or real business during this course. Each week you will study and ‘strategically’ create a piece of the plan. The last week of the course you will put the pieces together to create your strategic plan!

Assignment

Write a 2 – 3 page paper where you explain the competitive advantage of a real or imagined business.

In your paper address the following:

Select an existing business or create one of your own. Describe the business in detail. Describe the product or service. Describe the goals and objectives of the company. Finally, elaborate on the company’s strategic plan based on Porter’s Three Generic Strategies. Where do they fit and why?

Note: If you select a real company please provide a link to their web site as a reference in APA format.

Carefully select the business since you will be completing additional assignments for this business in future weeks.

Include a title page and 3-5 references. Only one reference may be from the internet (not Wikipedia). The other references must be from the Grantham University online library. Please adhere to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), (6th ed., 2nd printing) when writing and submitting assignments and papers.

Think abstractly about the text and share the main ideas. You might brainstorm a few keywords first before writing to make sure you’re describing the big ideas.

Read the book <the complete persepolis> by Marjane Satrapi

and write the 2 pages double space MLA format Journal. Also Include a quote from the <Daodejing> (by Laozi) and discuss a passage from the Daodejing, giving your analysis of how Laozi’s thought connects, or doesn’t, to the ideas expressed in your discussion above.  Cite.

Journal entries may not be made up at a later date. These posts are a place to process each text, usually at the beginning of a text, to figure out what the main difficulties of the text are, the main ideas for you, and to demonstrate the thoroughness of your effort to share what it’s like for you to read this text and what it’s about. Each journal must follow the

guidelines below:

·       Think abstractly about the text and share the main ideas. You might brainstorm a few keywords first before writing to make sure you’re describing the big ideas. If you wish, you could use these keywords as a title for the blog. Not a summary. Tell your readers what the text is about at an analytical level, sharing underlying themes, motifs, issues.

·       Most compelling idea: what’s most important, interesting, agreeable or disagreeable to you in this section of the reading? Include a quote from the text that best illustrates this idea (format, cite) and discuss the idea to the fullest extent you can. Yes, say more! Use the  “Text Analysis Tipsheet” ( below) to help you consider various aspects of the passage and idea to discuss.  If you make a connection to a world issue past or present you may feel free to hyperlink to more info for us to read or see.

Locate a scholarly article on a loosely philosophical topic. Provide a reconstruction of the argument provided by the article.

Locate a scholarly article on a loosely philosophical topic. Provide a reconstruction of the argument provided by the article.

To do this, you must successfully break the argument down into premises and conclusions.

The paper should be structured as follows.

I.                    Introduction (This should be extremely short– a few sentences at most. Here you can introduce the author and the paper, and what it is about.

II.                  Argument (This is the meat of the paper.) Here you should reconstruct The author’s argument in detail. This should include the primary argument and sub-arguments. Determine if and how each premise is supported. Do not evaluate during this portion, simply present the argument that Singer puts forward. (Singer’s argument is much simpler than Frege’s so this section won’t be quite as long.)

III.   Response Provide a critical response or a defense of the argument (Just like the Singer paper) Ideally, you should make a couple of argumentative moves here.

Guidelines:

Make sure that you cite your primary source and any other sources properly. Many of you failed to do this for the first paper, and I let you slide/gave you assistance. All improperly cited papers from now on will receive a 0.

-The paper should be at most five pages. (12 pt. font double spaced) Longer papers will be graded down. Note that you might struggle to fit all the requisite information into five pages. Anything less than four pages is most likely too short.

Misc

Here is a rough guide for how your paper should be structured:

Section I- A short paragraph, no more than 1/3 of a page

Section II-  pages. Here’s where you present the argument and present justification for the premises. You may break this into two sections (reconstruction followed by premise justification) or go piece by piece (justify each premise after stating it). Either is acceptable.

Section III- In this section I’d like you to provide a response to the argument presented, and if space permits, a speculative response in turn. (Just like the Singer Paper)

By cultivating these abilities and knowing our own strengths, we can become leaders who can have a significant impact on our classroom, school site, or other organization.

Leadership Conference Poster Session

This discussion provides an opportunity to connect your personalized leadership strengths and motivation with your skills as a leader to further develop into an efficient change agent. Being an effective leader who successfully implements change in a school or other organization can be a challenge! Kouzes and Posner (2007) claimed “leadership is an identifiable set of skills that are available to all of us, not just a few charismatic men and women” (p.20). While this may be true, it takes work and inspiration to learn about yourself and the characteristics that build an effective leader. There are multiple theories that indicate that effective leaders can be cultivated through the deliberate acquisition of certain skills (Senge, 1990). According to Senge (1990, p.3):

…organizations where people continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free, and where people are continually learning to see the whole together.

By cultivating these abilities and knowing our own strengths, we can become leaders who can have a significant impact on our classroom, school site, or other organization. You previously read chapter two of Buczynski and Hansen (2014), which discussed the various types of leadership and the mix of behaviors and other skills that are necessary to be an effective leader. Lord and Hall, as cited in Buczynski and Hansen (p. 57) suggest the “leadership role must become part of one’s self-identity.” Chapter two is an effective source of information for this discussion as well.

Digital poster presentations are increasingly the norm in the field of education as well as other professions. The use of technology in these types of forums is becoming essential in staying updated and competitive in the field. It is essential that you have experience in creating a digital poster presentation. Here you imagine you are presenting a high quality digital presentation to a group of key stakeholders regarding your action research. Therefore, the purpose of this discussion is to link your personalized leadership motivation into your skills as a leader in order to further develop into an efficient change agent. In this case, the change you are instigating is conducted through your action research. This process, in turn, greatly affects your followers, and the organization in which you work. Being motivated to understand and invest in your strengths and areas of challenges greatly informs your practice (Rath & Conchie, 2008).

Initial Post: Imagine you are selected from a large pool of applicants to participate in a distinguished conference poster session focusing on leadership strategies in action research. Your goals are to create a one page digital poster that includes three leadership and motivation themes identified from this week’s readings and your experiences, including a one-sentence explanation of each selected theme, and stating the ways leadership and motivational traits are represented in your action research study. Be sure to design the poster so that it is professional in appearance and therefore appropriate for presentation at the conference poster session. As you create your poster, consider what you have learned about what makes professional presentations effective and appealing to an audience. In this case, there will be well-known authors, experts in the field, and influential participants present including stakeholders in your own action research study. Use Glogster, Word, PowerPoint, or other software of your choice to create the poster and post the link to the flyer in your initial post or attach the poster to your initial post, whichever is most appropriate for the technology you chose.

Part 1: Short Answer Responses

Evaluate the following case studies, identifying IDEA disability categories where applicable. In 100-250 word responses, classify the IDEA disability category that each student may fall under. Provide a rationale for your identification choice that takes into consideration each student’s developmental milestones.

Tomas, Kindergarten

Tomas entered Mrs. Richards’ Kindergarten classroom at the beginning of the school year with great excitement! He showed great interest in learning and being in the classroom with other students. As the school year progressed, however, Tomas’ excitement quickly turned into frustration. He struggled with recognizing the letters in his name, identifying different shapes, and consistently could not follow two-part instructions. He also was dramatically less able than his peers to focus on a task. His frustrations have led to impulsive actions. Mrs. Richards has called a meeting with his parents to address her concerns.

Harper, 3rd grade

Harper attends Sunset Elementary School and has been placed in a class with 25 other 3rd graders. Harper loves her teacher Mrs. Hernandez and struggles when a substitute takes her place. She excels in math and tends to get bored when the other kids in her class struggle. Harper also loves reading about the weather, somewhat obsessively, and can share weather facts and details for hours. She enjoys going to school, but does struggle with the loud noises a school brings. In school assemblies, for instance, she becomes overly upset about the noise level and tends to rock back and forth to calm herself.

Austin, 5th grade

Austin was 9 years old when he was hit by a car while riding his bike on the sidewalk. He broke his arm and leg and also hit his head very hard. When he came home from the hospital he looked just fine, but he needed lots of help. Now back at school, there are changes in Austin that are hard to understand. It takes Austin longer to do things and he has trouble remembering. He can’t always find the words he wants to use. Math is hard for him now, but it was his strongest academic area before the accident.

Part 2: Essay

Selecting one of the student scenarios in Part 1, address the following prompts in a 750-1,000-word essay:

A.    Describe how language, culture, and family background influence the learning of individuals with the selected disability.

B.     Summarize the cognitive, linguistic, social and emotional development of individuals with the selected disability and three instructional approaches that respond to the needs of individuals with the selected disability.

C.     Support your response with at least three scholarly resources. Prepare this assignment according to the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.

To what degree are your data collection instruments yielding the information you’d hoped for in answering your research questions? Why or why not?

Operation Reconnaissance

Research supports the contention that formative assessment has a direct impact on student learning (Volante and Beckett, 2011) which is also a goal of action research. Formative assessment of data is a reevaluation process that is conducted by the researcher for the purpose of continual improvement (Buczynski & Hansen, 2014). The function of this practice is to help researchers and leaders make adjustment that will best inform and change educational outcomes (Mills, 2014). This research, paired with the successful exercise of leadership practices improves the teaching and learning process because it causes us to respond to the needs of the educational environment. In this discussion, you have the opportunity to think about this iterative process of your research process.

Initial Post: Buczynski and Hansen (2014, p. 31) share important points to consider regarding effective leadership practices that yield results in the differentiated learning environment. This is affectionately termed, the change leader which is what you are becoming! Here, you discuss the status of your action research implementation focusing your discussion on the following questions:

  • Are you closer to answering your research question(s)? Why or why not?
  • To what degree are your data collection instruments yielding the information you’d hoped for in answering your research questions? Why or why not? and
  • How have your leadership skills been put to work specifically, as you have participated as a researcher?
