What we have learned so far in this course is that students come to us with assorted characteristics, physical and cognitive disabilities, multicultural backgrounds, and diverse learning needs. We have also learned that the systems of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are grounded in differentiated instructional practices to form the basis of quality curriculum.

As noted in Week Two, your participation in your school’s Professional Learning Community (PLC) as developing experts in implementing differentiated instruction will guide your PLC team to create a two- to three-pageWord document-based prospective blog (not an actual blog at this time) that identifies differentiated assessment and teaching strategies. These strategies can be used to assess student mastery of the new Common Core State Standards while providing engaging and rigorous classroom instruction.

**For the purpose of this assignment, you will be using a Word document (two- to three-pages) to create a prospective blog that can be designed online at another time.**

Within your blog, you must include:

  • An overview and focus of the Common Core State Standards initiative
  • The purpose of the Common Core State Standard’s conception (what are the expectations of the CCSS)?
  • The academic impact the Common Core State Standards
  • A description of the Standards for Mathematics
  • A description of the Standards for English Language Arts
  • How differentiated instruction is an essential strategy for the CCSS?
  • Five or more differentiated strategies, tools, or activities that’ll support teacher’s implementation of the CCSS for Mathematics
  • Five or more differentiated strategies, tools, or activities that’ll support teacher’s implementation of the CCSS for English Language Arts
  • Analysis of how differentiation can be applied to teaching in the classroom

Understanding Rhetoric Issue

The reading and forum assignments this week should also help you propose your article, as you read and discuss what it means to write for a public audience. Please read Understanding Rhetoric Issue 7 and They Say/I Say Chapters 7 & 8.

Using what you have learned from the readings (Understanding Rhetoric Issue 7 and They Say/I Say chapters 7 & 8) describe how writing for a public audience is fundamentally different than writing for an academic audience (like your professor and classmates). Use examples from the text as well as your own experiences to describe specific differences between writing for these two types of audiences. Respond to two peers.

Now that you have a specific idea of what a feature article is, let’s start planning for how you will write your own using the A3 Feature Article Proposal assignments.

Now that you have a specific idea of what a feature article is, let’s start planning for how you will write your own using the A3 Feature Article Proposal assignments.

Under Assignments, please complete the A3 Feature Article Proposal, worth 50 points. Please use this proposal and not the questions included in the assignment sheet for A3. I have revised the A3 assignment sheet, but in the case that you may have downloaded an older copy, please disregard and download again.

The proposal is a requirement before you can submit a rough draft of A3 (due next week). Take time to consider the questions, review example feature articles and consult the sources you have collected for your research. Each of these resources can be helpful. And, as always, don’t hesitate to contact me for ideas. I love to help students, especially in the early planning stages of writing!

What sorts of information does a feature article contain?

While last week we spent researching the topic of majors/careers, this week we turn out focus to HOW we will present the research to a general audience.
After you check out the Powerpoint’s: Introduction to Visual Rhetoric and Introduction to Document Design (found in Course Content), you will write Journal 5 which asks you to answer the question, What is a feature article?
Examples of feature articles can be found in Course Content. Read several of them to deduce what a feature article is. Use one of the articles to answer these questions so that you can be specific with your answers. By focusing on the purpose, audience, context, and formal elements (design, visual rhetoric) you will be able to deduce the type of article you will be writing for the third major assignment (A3):

What sorts of information does a feature article contain?

What audience does it appeal to?

Where was it published, etc?

How does the publication inform how the article is written?

How does the author use visual rhetoric? Document design elements?

Structure And Management Competency

When starting a new business venture, you must decide whether you will take over a family business, start a new business, or buy an existing business. You must show investors that you have evaluated each option and decided on the alternative that would be most beneficial for your business. Once you make this decision, you must choose the legal structure that would best suit your business goals. In addition, you will want to consider the types of managers your business will need. Communicate this information to your investors in a well-organized written plan, making sure that you explain the reasoning behind your choices.

If you take over a family business or buy an existing business, you will more than likely keep the business structure and management systems that are already in place. If that is what you choose, then, for part two below, describe to your investors the existing business structure and its advantages for your business. For part three below, describe the current management positions in that business.

  1. Determine the type of business you will start (taking over a family business, starting a new business, buying an existing business, and buying a franchise), and explain why you made that choice.
  2. Identify the legal structure that you feel will best benefit your business (Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, Corporation, or LLC). Discuss the advantages of this structure for your business.
  3. Discuss the types of management positions your business will need, and, using the four functions of management, describe the tasks each management position will perform for each function.
