Describe the portions of Singer’s article you seek to engage/critique.

For this project, you will compose a researched response to Peter Singer’s article “America’s Shame.” In Module 4 Assignment 2, you were asked to provide your impressions of this article. In this assignment, you will take it a step further by constructing your own well-researched positions on the topic and offer thoughtful solutions to real-world problems. This assignment allows you to assess and defend the reasonableness of personal beliefs through critical assessment of Singer’s arguments and the presentation of your own, original arguments on the subject.

Review the following:

  • Singer, P. (2009). America’s shame. The Chronicle of Higher Education, 55(27), B6–B10. (EBSCO AN 37137370)
    http://search.proquest.com.libproxy.edmc.edu/docview/214643086?
    accountid=34899

Develop a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation summarizing the main points of the article. Keep in mind that while bullet points are acceptable, complete sentences should be used throughout the presentation.

Complete the following:

  • Describe the portions of Singer’s article you seek to engage/critique.
  • Using the tools of evaluation you have learned throughout the course, create an original argument in response to Singer’s article that advances your own thesis in light of Singer’s argument. Clearly state your argument position, using complete sentences to do so.
    • Remember the nature of the stance is not important; you can agree or disagree with any point Singer makes within this article. The important thing is you construct a stance that clearly engages a portion of Singer’s text. Including properly cited examples from the article is suggested.
    • As you advance your own thesis, be sure to include your position on how to address the problems that Singer discusses in his article. Again, you may agree or disagree with Singer; however, be sure to offer your own solutions to the issue of world poverty, as discussed by Singer.
  • Support your argument with the use of original research. Use at least three credible, academic resources to support your positions. These should be sources other than Singer’s “America’s Shame” article.

Develop a 12–15-slide presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint format. Be sure to include two additional slides—one for the title and the other for references. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A1.ppt.

By Saturday, July 12, 2014, deliver your assignment to the M5: Assignment 1 Dropbox.

Is it mass media if it’s work or school?

FOUR PAGES, DOUBLE-SPACED

To begin thinking about the roles and functions of the mass media in society, it is helpful to observe the place of the media in your own life.  For this assignment you are to avoid all mass media for one day (24 hours) and then write a four-page paper (no more, no less) describing your experience and your reactions to it. This includes a detailed description of your day without media, comparing it to a typical day (i.e., waking to an alarm instead of music; listening to your car rattle instead of a CD on the drive to school). You cannot “recall” a day you went without media. You must do this assignment between today and when it is due.

During the day try to avoid all mass media such as television, radio, music, the Internet, computer games, mail advertisements, books, magazines, and movies.  Interpersonal communication is allowed, including the telephone and e-mail but not listservs or online gaming.  No tweeting or reading tweets. MP3 players, music from your computer, chat rooms, and the like are considered media. Do not use them.  No Facebook or similar sites. When in doubt, go without.

After the day is over, write a paper, in detail, describing your observations, including how your day went comparing it to a day with media.  You must answer the following questions to get full credit as well as include a description of your day: What did you like about not having the mass media in your daily routine?  What did you dislike?  Was it difficult for you?  Why or why not?  What did you learn about your own media use?  What did you learn about society’s dependence on mass media? It may help to take notes.

The paper should be typed or computer-generated double-spaced 12 point type with one-inch margins. No hand corrections. It should be grammatically correct with proper punctuation and spelling. Put some thought into the writing of the paper, as carelessness will lower your grade. No papers may be e-mailed or dropped off in my box or slipped under my door. Only papers turned in the first 10 minutes of class on Friday, October 1, will be accepted.

Is it mass media if it’s work or school? Reading a textbook for a class, using a computer at your job, having background music where you work—all of these are NOT considered media use. However, going to a bar, restaurant, mall, or coffeehouse to shop, eat, browse, etc., where there is music in the background must be avoided. The same is true with riding in a car and listening to music, going to a movie with a friend, or watching that big playoff game on television. Any sort of Internet surfing is considered media use. E-mail, because it is considered interpersonal (such as telephone use) is not and can be used.  Texting (but not Tweeting) is OK, too. Don’t panic if you find yourself someplace where music is playing, or if you catch yourself after a minute reading a newspaper or, even, a billboard. You don’t need to start over! In fact, the inadvertent use of media is something that few of us can avoid and should be noted in your paper about how ubiquitous mass media are in our lives.

Lack of training to implement the new standards

Chapter 5 states:

Differentiated instruction is built on a foundation of effective teaching practices. Quality curriculum is one of these defining principles, as what is taught serves as the basis for how it is taught. Quality curriculum has its basis in standards, or descriptions of student outcomes in content areas. (p1)

However, many educators have concerns regarding these new standards for various reasons outlined in Chapter 5 in the textbook including, but not limited to:

  • Lack of training to implement the new standards
  • A realistic view of standard mastery of students with special needs
  • Too much government control over creative freedom of instruction
  • How these new standards will be implemented on such a large scale

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are meant to provide educators and parents with a consistent and clear understanding of student expectations. While written to address English Language Arts and Mathematics, the CCSS address college and career ready knowledge and skills in preparing students to transition from high school to college.

Assignment Instructions:

First, read Chapter 5 of the course text. Then view the webinar, “Common Core State Standards: Where Does Differentiating Fit”.

Next, read and respond to the following scenario:

Ms. Phillips instructs in a middle school inclusion class with 20 ‘typical’ students, three students who have an IEP for a Specific Learning Disability, one student who has an IEP for “Other Health Impairment” (ADHD) and two students who are identified as ELL.  Her class is beginning with a unit on the American Civil War that will focus on the significance of the Civil War Battle and the reason and significance behind President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

As the unit starts, Ms. Phillips provides her students with a KWL chart to share what they already know about the Civil War

Civil War Chart

Example of a Student Response to the KWL Chart (Creately, 2011)

After reviewing the student’s KWL charts (see an example above), Ms. Phillips realizes that she should integrate differentiated strategies to provide a more well-rounded and accurate understanding of the topic and to make it more personally relevant.

For this discussion:

  • Create two measurable lesson objectives that are aligned with one Common Core Standard, and two differentiated content strategies to master the objective/ standard.

  • Explain how the strategies you’ve suggested are engaging to diverse learners.

  • Cite scholarly sources to support how your strategies are examples of differentiation.

An overview and focus of the Common Core State Standards initiative

What we have learned so far in this course is that students come to us with assorted characteristics, physical and cognitive disabilities, multicultural backgrounds, and diverse learning needs. We have also learned that the systems of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are grounded in differentiated instructional practices to form the basis of quality curriculum.

As noted in Week Two, your participation in your school’s Professional Learning Community (PLC) as developing experts in implementing differentiated instruction will guide your PLC team to create a two- to three-pageWord document-based prospective blog (not an actual blog at this time) that identifies differentiated assessment and teaching strategies. These strategies can be used to assess student mastery of the new Common Core State Standards while providing engaging and rigorous classroom instruction.

**For the purpose of this assignment, you will be using a Word document (two- to three-pages) to create a prospective blog that can be designed online at another time.**

Within your blog, you must include:

  • An overview and focus of the Common Core State Standards initiative
  • The purpose of the Common Core State Standard’s conception (what are the expectations of the CCSS)?
  • The academic impact the Common Core State Standards
  • A description of the Standards for Mathematics
  • A description of the Standards for English Language Arts
  • How differentiated instruction is an essential strategy for the CCSS?
  • Five or more differentiated strategies, tools, or activities that’ll support teacher’s implementation of the CCSS for Mathematics
  • Five or more differentiated strategies, tools, or activities that’ll support teacher’s implementation of the CCSS for English Language Arts
  • Analysis of how differentiation can be applied to teaching in the classroom

social media and culture essay

Select an overseas country of interest (but it cannot be the UK, Italy ,and France ). You should then address the following 5 points: your main focus should be on the researches of theories of social media and culture

1. Based on the theories and concepts from the literature, describe, discuss and interpret what is known, in general, about consumers, customers and managers motivations and behaviour in the social media environment. You need to understand the social media theories doing a lot of researches about it form article and journals. You have to talk in general showing an excellent understanding of the relevant theories you will use… this is the main part most important part they want to see lots of research been done about the theories of social media. (MAIN PART WRITE MORE HERE is very important )

2. After that, you have to select a country that you need to understand in terms of social media and you have to justify why you selected this country., you have to explain obviously the social media in the country what are the characteristics of social media in that country (that can be platforms) you can choose any country but you should justify why you chose it.

3. Using your research of what is known from the literature about social media discussed in point 1, critically evaluate and apply appropriate cultural theories and concepts to explain how and why they might affect motivations and behaviour in social media in your selected country. So, the cultural theories that need to be relevant to explain why consumers, why companies behave or why they use the social media in the way that you use. That can be cultural theories, can be element of the culture, can be religion, can be language that explain the social media on motivations and behaviours in that country for both consumers and companies, for example: why consumers and companies in the country that you selected behave why they use social media? (This part is also very important so you have to focus on the theories relevant one).

4. From your findings discuss the implications of this knowledge of culture and social media for SME exporters. What are the implications for companies for a SME in general.

5. Identify any future avenues for further research. ..Based on your reading and researches what are the areas for further research.
