6.9 (4th ed.). Communicating with I/O devices is achieved using combinations of polling, interrupt handling, memory mapping, and special I/O commands. Answer the questions about communicating with I/O subsystems for the following applications using combinations of these techniques. 1) Auto Pilot; 2) Automated Thermostat; (a) Describe device polling. Would each application be appropriate for communication using polling techniques? Explain. (b) Describe interrupt driven communication. For each application, if polling is inappropriate, explain how interrupt driven techniques could be used. (c) Does it make sense to define I/O subsystems that use a combination of memory mapping and command driven communication? Explain your answer.

You and a group of friends decide to help a neighbor build a handicap access ramp for his home.

The group decides to divide the work into three types: Designing, Building, and Testing.

The Designers researched the project on the internet and found the necessary requirements for

the project – see below. From these requirements they will create a functional specification for

the access ramp. Think of the functional specification as a blueprint. The Builders will take this

specification from the Designers and create/build the ramp. The Testers will compare the

functional specification, which includes the requirements, with the new ramp to make sure they

are equivalent. In other words, they will make sure the Builders followed the Functional

Specification. In addition, the Testers will perform generic tests that could be applied to any ramp.

For example, they would want to make sure the ramp could support the weight of a person and a

wheelchair.

You are one of the Testers and your assignment is to create a test plan for the ramp that has

already been built. A member of your team already took a few measurements of the newly built

ramp. Be creative, but make sure your plan includes the requirements to ensure the success of

the project and note any deficiencies. The test plan should include the safety of all the folks using

the ramp, including those who don’t use a wheelchair

    Problem Description

In this assignment, you are to develop a basic text-based drawing application. A sample drawing is

    shown below.

    It has

    • Borders which form a rectangle around a drawing area of 20 by 30 (drawn with the asterisk character in this example)

    • Two lines (the ground and the lamp post)

    • One circle (the lamp)

    • Two rectangles (the house walls and the door)

    • One triangle (the roof)

    • A string of text (“FOR SALE” displayed vertically)

Initially, your main task is to develop the classes whose instances are objects that make up a drawing.

Essentially, they are classes that represent windows and shapes.

You will then develop a menu program that allows the user to progressively create a drawing (by adding

shapes and removing shapes), save the definition of the drawing in a text file and read it back to reconstruct it.
