She could have a happy ending

In her novel The Princess of Cleves, LaFayette illustrates the complex love-desire relationships between the three most prominent figures in the sixteenth-century court society that she portrays. Despite the courtly love of the 17th century, The Princess of Cleves does not fall into the trap of vulgar love stories. From the plot point of view, although the description is a triangle love relationship, there are no excessive misleading coincidences among them. What it describes is an eternal female theme, namely the relationship and conflict between love and marriage, and desire and morality. LaFayette describes the psychological activities of the characters in a subtle and subtle way, reflecting how an extramarital love secretly and tabooed occurred in the court society at that time: the love affair experience makes the three main characters feel deepest is not the joy of love, but the anxiety, suspicion, jealousy and deep pains caused by love. Encounter love for them means to participate in a will of the competition, the courage to express love and heal the inner waves of restraint repeatedly fighting.

In the novel, the noble prince of Cleves falls in love with the beautiful and dignified Mademoiselle de Chartres (Madame de Cleves) at first glance and then makes wild courtship to the princess. The princess follows her mother’s advice and marries the prince. Their marriage does not base on love, but base on respect for each other’s social status. So after marriage, the prince of Cleves did not get the love he wanted from his wife, and his wife just esteems him from the beginning to the end. On the contrary, the princess found out that she had a deep love, which her husband desires, for the young prince, the Duke of Nemours. All this did not escape her mother’s keen eyes, she began to worry about her daughter’s fate and always pay attention to her daughter. Though the young girl was not aware of the danger, love, which she had never experienced, was tapping into her heart. Her dying mother warned her: “You are on the edge of a precipice: a great effort, a violent struggle, alone can save you… You are in danger of losing that reputation which you have acquired and which I have so ardently desired for you. Take strength and courage, my daughter: withdraw from the court… Terrible as it may cooer at first, it will, in the end, be pleasanter than the consequences of a love affair.” [footnoteRef:1]The young woman struggled with herself, with her love, and avoided meeting the Duke of Nemours; But love always seemed to elude her, and always perplexed her. In fact, the princess of Cleves’s behaviors in this mismatched relationship had already met the highest standard of mainstream morality at that time. Although it is so painful, the princess decided to avoid the Duke of Nemours as much as possible, ignoring his various overtures to her. However, once there were many guests at her house, and the Duke of Nemours quietly took her portrait from its frame and put it in his pocket. When their eyes met, the princess of Cleves dropped her eyes and pretended not to see anything. The first time love confession, in front of all, did not say a word, also hide the eyes of all. On another occasion, in the course of an ordinary court play, the Duke of Nemours was nearly thrown off an untamed horse. The face of princess Cleves, who was so much worried about the duke’s danger, turned a dead grey and was noticed. The Princess realized that she could not contain her passionate love for the Duke of Nemours, but she has enough willpower built a strong wall between them. She fought hard to suppress her feelings for the Duke and bravely told her husband that she was in love with a man, hoping to be able to with the help from her husband to get rid of this guilt. But human nature is unfathomable, honesty brought no relief to the princess. The prince greatly admired his wife’s fidelity and purity, but he overestimated himself and could not contain his jealousy, and was ashamed of his own jealousy. After a coincidence, the prince concluded that his wife has not been loyal to him, and he finally died of grief, the husband’s jealousy and sacrifice from the same sincere love for his wife. Since her husband died, the princess of Cleves was free to act, but she refused to marry the Duke of Nemours. If she had turned down the duke before for reputation, at this time she did so because of guilty to her husband. She was painfully aware that the prince’s death was her fault.

“Elegance” love occurs between knights and ladies, implying the concept of time in reality love often is not involved in marriage, especially for the aristocrats. The meaning of marriage first is to realize the significance of political power, but love is not for people not to yearn for, the pure love between lovers is regarded as marriage compensation, become people’s desire to pursue and protect a romantic ideal. Princess of Cleves is experiencing the dilemma that every woman may encounter: to meet a faithful lover when the fate is cornering, and then suddenly meet the true love when life is stable, which is a devastating passion and desire. There is a famous line in the American TV series “Horace and Pete”: love is rare, and it probably won’t happento you, ever[footnoteRef:2]. But when love happens at the wrong time, whatever choice you make is bound to be accompanied by heartbreak. I believe this is also the tragic inevitability of the conflict between love (desire) and etiquette that La Fayette is trying to express. At the crossroads of love, there is a very clear choice, the princess can choose to be the prince’s good wife, or have a hot and strong love with the duke. Nonetheless, both sides cannot give up, the result of a choice also do not come out, everyone in the drama is heartbroken. In this triangle relationship, no one is to be blamed. Heavy chains make love is doomed to be free, and morality is everyone must carry forward the constraints. The inner beauty of the heroine strongly attracts the duck of Nemours. And the more the princess of Cleves remembers the requirements of virtue and tries to suppress the true love in her heart, the more her noble and perfect image in the eyes of the Duke of Nemours. Faced with the complex life proposition of love and entanglement, princess Cleves finally made the choice according to the rational judgment. As for princess Cleves’s initial marriage to someone she did not love, it cannot be attributed to the weakness of women, who are always confused and hallucinated about love. In addition, in today’s society, there are countless young women who have been kidnapped by social values to fulfill their expected marriage obligations, not to mention the noble court in the 17th century. The princess is regarded as a symbol of pure love, and many people praise her chastity and virtue. However, in my eyes, the princess has always been confined to her own place. Although I am annoyed by her struggling with herself and hanging the moral shackles tightly around her neck, there is no denying that she has tried her best to do her best. After all, in such a court society, where everyone conspired against each other and indulged their own private desires, the princess did not follow the crowd and chose to maintain her own dignity. In the end, she died alone in the monastery with a sense of backbone. In fact, I really hope that the princess can be a little emotional, cannot be so like a flower in the mountains, trying to suppress their own desire. Is there anything that needs her to be responsible for? She loves someone bravely would not cause very terrible consequences. What she doesn’t understand is that it is happy to try to love when you can love. Hence, the whole story should be called as a pity.
