Consider the wider variety of clubs and organizations that seek public support and/or philanthropy in the name of cultural awareness, diversity, the environment, the arts and humanities, education, safety, science and research, disability, nutrition, disease, etc., Select an already existing (do not invent one) campus, local, state, national, or even international organization with which you are familiar and that you believe is deserving of support. Considering your audience, write a proposal urging a specific call to action in support of that particular organization.

Ultimately that call to action should constitute a commitment of time or money from your audience– that is, the audience is requested to join/get involved to aid the organization: to give blood, to volunteer at a neighborhood watch, to take part in a run or walk for a cause, or make a specific financial contribution (what will their contribution provide?) . Their support will ultimately benefit other people and provide a solution to a significant need in the community.

Devise your organizational plan as follows (according to the Monroe Motivated Sequence)

I. Attention— Call attention to the situation. Why should this issue be of importance to your audience? (Resist the urge to announce your organization at the start!) Consider ethos and pathos as two possible approaches to employ.

II. Need— Show there is a need to be met. What problem exists to be solved?

III. Satisfaction— Establish how the need can be satisfied. How will your proposal solve that need?

IV. Visualization— Help your audience to see the changes that will result from their support. How will things be changed or improved?

V. Action— What kind of specific action by the audience is required to bring about the change?

This proposal will require some research, as you will need to develop evidence in the need, satisfaction, visualization aspects of the writing. Anticipate your audience’s reservations about your proposal and the practicality of your claim. (Will it cost too much money? Take too much time? Will the action even solve the problem?)

Consider that your request for time and/or money will be in competition for limited resources within your audience. How will you establish credibility and ultimately appeal to them that this organization is deserving over the many other organizations that vie for their support? The success of the proposal depends as much on your pitch as it does on the selection of a worthy organization.

Essay 2: Narration

Write a personal narrative about a specific moment in your life. This essay may tell a story; describe a person, place, or event; express an attitude; or reflect on the significance of any personal experience. Since this essay is a personal narrative it primarily deals with you, your experiences, your feelings and your moods. Your essay is a narrative (telling a story about something you have experienced). Your purpose is to recall and then use specific examples that recreate this memory and show why it is so significant to you. The most important aspect is to ensure that you convey why this experience is important and what you have learned from it. Remember to choose an experience you feel comfortable writing about. It is a good idea to revisit the section titled “Tips for writing your narrative essay” (pp. 143-147) of your textbook.

Remember to have an effective introduction and conclusion while writing your essay. When describing the experience, use details from all five senses. Try to vary your placement of this in different paragraphs. Your essay will become more interesting if you use lots of details about people, places, and actions.

Your final draft must be typed and should be left justified with jagged right margins (like this page). Refer to a sample student paper given on page 482 (for those of you not familiar with writing academic papers). Double-space, and use 12-point Times New Roman. Do not plagiarize. Additionally, make sure to read over your work before turning it in, and do not forget to carefully use your spell-checker. Failure to do so may considerably lower your grade.

Remember to read through the examples given in the textbook.

I will grade your final essay on the basis of the following rubric:

1. Interesting and appropriate title
2. A limited subject that is focused on a key element
3. An introduction that captures the attention of your reader (separate paragraph)
4. A thesis that revolves around one focused and clear sentence
5. Use of specific details that employs narrative and expressive techniques
6. A clear chronology that organizes the essay that helps readers follow a sequence of events (hint: use transitions):

You should feel free to change the wording as you like/need to make your point. It is usually easiest to create three reasons for a thesis in order to create three solid body paragraphs. Your Works Cited does not count as a page. If you are having trouble getting to four pages, read ahead on the short West Guide chapters (13 & 14) on Introduction and Conclusion, and see if you can add some “meat” to your essay there.

Your essay must include:

• Introduction
• body paragraphs with topic sentences that link to thesis
• conclusion
• quotes from the articles* (2-3 quotes/paragraphs per paragraph is ideal) -Quotes should not exceed 3 lines more than once
• a Works Cited page

Guidelines

• Use examples and quotes from the articles to support your assertions. At the end of every sentence in which you use a quote, put a citation.
• Make sure that your essay has an introduction, conclusion, and topic sentences for body paragraphs. These concepts are addressed in modules and in The West Guide.
• One way to introduce a quote is to use a signal phrase.
