Consolation and Philosophy?

Analytical Essay Students are to write a 3-4 page analytical essay on an ethical topic of their own choosing. The paper topic must originate from Boethius’ Consolation, Kant’s Grounding or Sartre’s Existentialism. I want students to pick a question that one of these books sparked in them and then use the book, and only the book, to answer the question. There should be NO internet citations or resources. I do not want students consulting the internet for topics or already written essays or help of any kind for this paper. The point of this assignment is for students to answer an original question that the book ignited in them by using the book itself as evidence. • The first thing you should do is decide which author you intend to write on. • The second thing you should do is formulate your question. • Next you should collect and organize quotes from the book that relate to your question. • Generate your thesis. It should be your answer to the question. • Body paragraphs must include your reasoning that supports your thesis, and body paragraphs must contain substantial text support (quotations). • The paper should be typed, double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12, and in MLA format. It should also include a works-cited for your primary source text. Sample questions you might try to answer are: 1.) Does Lady Philosophy ultimately cure Boethius’ anxiety in the Consolation of Philosophy? Why or why not? 2.) What is the relationship between Fate and Providence in the Consolation and Philosophy? 3.) Why does Kant this it is possible to have an objective morality that is universal? What is his evidence? What are the strengths and weaknesses of his position? 4.) In section III of Kant’s Grounding, he references a distinction between and intelligible world and a sensible world. How does Kant’s distinction relate to Plato’s allegory of the Cave? 5.) For Sartre, does one have to exist in anguish and despair if God does not exist? 6.) Is everything permissible if God does not exist? These are only examples of questions these books provoke in me. You can use any of these, but I recommend you selecting your own question. You will get more out of the paper writing experience that way.

Drug Legalization

QUESTION 1

  1. Cite a contemporary moral issue in our society. Apply one ethical theory learned in class to judge this moral issue. Use the theory’s claims to back up and support your arguments. This question is worth 25 points. Not applying the ethical doctrine is an automatic zero.

moral issue :

  • Drug Legalization

Utilitarian claims

Utilitarianism: is the ethical doctrine that the moral worth of an action is solely determined by its contribution to overall utility.

It is thus a form of consequentialism, meaning that the morality of an action is determined by its outcome

*the ends justify the means.

*Utility: the good to be maximized

Peter Singer defines it as the satisfaction of preferences.

* an action may be considered right if it produces the greatest amount of net benefit and the least loss/cost of any available alternative action.

* the consequences of a particular action form the basis for any valid moral judgment about that action.

*morally right action is one that produces a good outcome, or consequence.

* the good is whatever brings the greatest happiness to the greatest number of people.

* “the greatest good for the greatest number of people.

* calculate the utility of an action by adding up all of the pleasure produced and subtracting from that any pain that might also be produced by the action.

Utilitarianism approach to morality quantitative and reductionistic

Utilitarianism can be contrasted with deontological ethics – focuses on the action itself rather than its consequences

In general use the term utilitarian often refers to a somewhat narrow economic or pragmatic viewpoint.

Write a 500-750 word essay using exemplification as a method of development.

Whether you use Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or some other word process to create your essays, save them as .rtf (rich text format). Doing so ensures I will be able to open and read them.

Exemplification Essay

Write a 500-750 word essay using exemplification as a method of development. Include a title page and outline with your essay.

Writing Approach

Determine exactly what point you are going to make and write it down in precise terms. Think about why you want to make this point. Develop a thesis statement (pages 47-49 in The St. Martin’s Handbook). Then choose examples and details that count for something, those that move the reader toward some goal.

Choose the best examples that honestly reflect the group or class they represent. Do not pick examples that do not support your thesis. Also, make sure that your examples display all the chief features of whatever you are illustrating.

Do not give your examples and their details in a haphazard manner; give some real thought to arranging them in the best possible order. You may use order of familiarity, climax, importance, or some other order.

If an essay develops a single example, try to have at least three important things to say about it–three areas of discussion.

Position writing presents an arguable opinion about an issue. The goal of a position paper is to convince the audience that a opinion is valid. Ideas need to be carefully examined in choosing a topic, developing the argument, and organizing the paper. It is very important to address all sides of the issue and present it in a manner that is easy for the audience to understand. Take one side of the argument. It is important to support the argument with evidence to ensure the validity of the claims, as well as to address the counterclaims.

Recommended length: 4-5 pages, double-spaced in 12pt font. APA Format.

The Position Essay: 15% (SLOs Chapter 2 a)

At this stage of the research essay, the synthesis essay has allowed students to become familiar with a variety of opinions on their topic of interest. Now, again, in preparation for the final essay, students are required to take a position on their topic. Throughout the research process, students might find their position shift. It is especially important to allow students to explore different positions, and to be encouraged that this is often evidence of maturity in their critical thinking process. As they read, new ideas may take hold, new questions arise; thus, new positions are formed. Ask them to be active readers and to observe what persuades them as a reader and why. Recommended Length: 4-5 pages. APA Format.

Purpose: To argue your position on an issue raised in at least two of the articles we have read, showing how your position relates to those authors.

Audience: An academic audience that includes the authors of the readings and other interested in the issue upon which you are focusing.

Questions for Consideration and Topic Exploration: Identify a key global challenge (linked to our course themes), given our continued reading and discussion, that you would like to explore and lead you toward your final research paper. After providing information on the challenge, you will then provide your stance on the issue and advocate for a means to overcome the global challenge. Please utilize the following theory, symbolic interactionism, to ground your paper (you may also incorporate critical or conflict theory, if applicable). As well, utilize a variety of sources beyond our course texts to help solidify your position on the global challenge. These should include scholarly journals (at least one), newspaper articles, international organizations websites (UN, OECD, World Bank, Grameen Bank, etc) as well as other materials related to the global challenge you have identified.
