Discussion 2: Evidence Based Practice
Competent social workers have many types of skills to complement a wide variety of theoretical knowledge. This skill set and knowledge base is often informed by research. Whether research is quantitative, qualitative, or a mixture of both, the information that well-formed studies yield contribute to the knowledge base of the social work profession as a whole.
For this Discussion, consider how evidence-based research informs social work practice. Think about how research findings translate into social work actions.
By Day 4
Post your explanation of how research informs a social worker’s application of the steps in the process of evidence-based practice. Be sure to explain how research contributes to what a social worker may do in practice. Please use the Resources to support your answers.
By Day 6
Respond to a colleague’s post by explaining what might enable or prevent a social worker from applying research findings to his or her practice. Please use the Resources to support your post.

Review the Final Assignment: Article Review and Critique in Week 10 for this class. Note that you will have to locate an empirical research article from a peer-reviewed journal. Begin to search for an article. Practice navigating the databases in the library by searching topics of interest. (Note: At this point, you do not need to identify the actual empirical research article. The goal of this assignment is to begin getting comfortable navigating the databases in the library).
For this Assignment, complete the following:
Identify a list of 10 peer reviewed social work journals from the library that you might find helpful relative to your social work practice interests.
In a 100-150 word paragraph, discuss why using research studies from peer reviewed journals is important to the development of knowledge in social work. For example, discuss the advantages of having articles reviewed by other scholars and researchers. Then using a case illustration, describe how articles from peer-reviewed journals can help to inform your social work practice decisions with clients, communities, agencies, and/or social work policies.

Purpose: Your goal is to engage your reader in a fascinating personal story. You need to patiently establish a foundation for your story and develop a coherent pattern for your observations. Supply plenty of detailed vocabulary to appeal to a variety of senses to help your reader become a part of the story. Be sure to include a very thoughtful point. Offer an observation about this tradition that will be remembered long after the story is told.
Audience: Your reader wishes to be transported to a certain time and place. Remember that your reader will become quickly impatient if adequate detail is not offered and if a contemplative goal is not reached. This paper is MUCH MORE than just the telling of a story.

Abnormal Psychology Spring 2019: Instructions for Mid-Term Paper For your mid

Abnormal Psychology Spring 2019:
Instructions for Mid-Term Paper
For your mid-term paper in Abnormal Psychology, choose any set of behaviors that have at some time, or still are, considered abnormal.
AUTISM:
If you would like to study a particular disorder, you will also have to talk about a time or place that the behaviors associated with that disorder were not considered abnormal. In other words, if you choose to study autism, for instance, your paper will explore how behaviors associated with autism were understood before the word autism was used to describe them.
You are expected to write a detailed research paper on the history of how this behavior has been understood differently across time and/or throughout different parts of the world. You should also overview how this behavior has been treated by doctors, psychologists, and/or other community leaders throughout time. For this you will want to include, at least, the following elements:
Overview the time period when, or the current location where, the set of behaviors you are studying were first classified as an individual abnormality. Was this done primarily for religious, medical, or other social reasons? What else is important about the society and/or culture in which this occurred?

Overview some time periods when, or a geographical locations where, the behavior you are studying were not considered an individual abnormality. How was the behavior understood differently? Were there social or other religious meanings attached to the behavior? What was unique about these contexts that produced a different understanding of such a set of behaviors?

Identify and describe at least three different forms of treatment that have been used throughout time to change this behavior. At least one of these should be some form of biological or medical intervention (e.g., pharmaceutical, surgical, electrical, etc.). The other two should be non-biological interventions (e.g., psychotherapies, community approaches, religious rituals, etc.). You should also explain to what extent these treatments were successful in changing the behaviors and whether they have been associated with long-term side effects that are detrimental to the health of the person receiving them.

Your paper must be at least 5 pages long, not including a title page, abstract, or reference page. Of these three, only a reference page is required; however, you can include the other two if you wish. Either way, the entire paper should be formatted in APA style. You must include at least THREE sources! These sources must either be peer-reviewed academic articles/books, or first-hand accounts of someone who displayed the behaviors you are studying and received treatment for them. This can include an auto-biography, a blog, a video blog, or interview transcript you find online. A third-hand account, such as a biography or case study, about someone who has displayed these behaviors would not qualify as a first-hand account, but if it is drafted in an academic article you can cite it as an academic source.
