Mood and Personality Disorders”

Controversy: Evaluating Media’s Accuracy

You must successfully complete the “Mood and Personality Disorders” quiz before you will be allowed to post in this discussion forum. Before working on this discussion, please read Chapters 6 and 9 in the course text and review any relevant Instructor Guidance.

For this discussion, you will enter into a dialogue on another ongoing controversy and contemporary issue regarding abnormal psychology. Specifically, how accurate are the various media representations of psychopathology?

As you enter into this conversation, analyze depictions of the identification and treatment of abnormal behavior in media sources. Then take a moment to consider and comment on the consequences of accurate and inaccurate depictions of mental health conditions in popular media. Identify at least one theoretical perspective (e.g., biological, cognitive, psychodynamic) from the literature that informs your observations. Additionally, you should integrate information on how media shapes our cultural expectations and norms with respect to abnormal/maladaptive behavior. Be sure to utilize fundamental concepts for the ethical application of psychology from Standards 2.04 and 5.04 of the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct as you create your responses.

If you chose to write about a movie character for your psychological report, you are welcome to include your evaluation of that movie’s depiction of psychopathology in this discussion forum. However, your evaluation alone will not suffice in the completion of this discussion.
Again, the goal of this discussion forum is to have a single dynamic and respectful conversation about how psychopathology is represented in the media and the consequences of those representations, not a series of 20 to 30 separate conversations. This means that every post should be in response to another post. Your instructor will be posting the initial thread to which you will respond. Only start a new discussion thread if you want to address an entirely different theme or question(s) within the discussion subject area. Additionally, only post after first carefully reading what all the others within the thread have written.

A simple agree or disagree statement is insufficient to be counted as a response. When presenting your opinion, cite relevant sources (beyond your text) to support your statements. Do not repeat what your classmates have already written, and do not ignore them if they ask you questions. Any questions asked of you must be answered, including questions from your instructor. Try to keep the conversation moving forward by presenting options, insights, alternative ideas on and/or interpretations of the topics and research.

You must post a response within the discussion on at least three separate days by Day 7, and your posts must total at least 800 words. There is no required word count for individual posts as long as your posts together total at least 800 words. There is no maximum number of posts for any discussion.
Once your discussion is graded, your instructor will provide you with a summary of the week’s discussion and any conclusions or definitions that the class agreed on in your grading feedback. Please keep this summary in mind for future discussions in this course.

Describe intersectionality and discuss its major components.

Question Set 1:

Describe intersectionality and discuss its major components. What were the major concepts behind the activities that were featured in our class? What did you take away, as an individual, from these activities? How does this concept relate to the LGBTQ community?

Question Set 2:

How was same-sex desire and activity thought about in ancient Greece? What was accepted and permissible? What wasn’t? What examples of same-sex relationships appear in ancient Greek literature? What were these types of relationships like in Ancient Rome and how did they differ from those in Greece? How were same-sex female relationships viewed during these period?

Controversy: Gender Dysphoria- Should It Be in the DSM-5?

You must successfully complete the “Stress, Trauma, Sexual Dysfunctions, Paraphilic Disorders, and Gender Dysphoria Disorders” quiz before you will be allowed to post in this discussion forum. Before working on this discussion, please read Chapter 12 in the course text, the article by Kamens (2011), watch the Beyond the Gender Binary: Yee Won Chong at TEDxRainier  video, and review any relevant Instructor Guidance.

For this discussion, you will enter into a conversation on another ongoing controversy and contemporary issue regarding abnormal psychology. Specifically, should gender dysphoria be included as a diagnosis in the DSM-5? It is absolutely essential that you view the required video and read the required article and your instructor’s initial post before participating in this discussion.

As you enter into this conversation, carefully consider the historical information you read regarding the rationale behind excluding the DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of gender identity disorder from the DSM-5. Then, take a moment to relate this historical background to the current ethical, clinical, and social controversies regarding gender dysphoria and the DSM-5. Analyze this controversy within the context of how clinicians ethically identify and treat psychiatric conditions. Be sure to integrate knowledge of any appropriate cultural considerations psychologist must be aware of when diagnosing gender dysphoria.

Again, the goal of this discussion forum is to have a single dynamic and respectful conversation about the inclusion of gender dysphoria as a diagnosable condition in the DSM-5, not a series of 20 to 30 separate conversations. This means that every post should be in response to another post. Your instructor will be posting the initial thread to which you will respond. Only start a new discussion thread if you want to address an entirely different theme or question(s) within the discussion subject area. Culturally Bound Syndromes and Symptoms

Controversy: Culturally Bound Syndromes and Symptoms
You must successfully complete the “Dissociative, Somatic Symptom, Schizophrenia, and Neurocognitive Disorders” quiz before you will be allowed to post in this discussion forum. Before you begin working on this discussion, please read the article by Wen-Shing (2006) as well as the “Guidelines on Multicultural Education, Training, Research, Practice, and Organizational Change for Psychologists,” and review any relevant Instructor Guidance.

For this discussion, you will enter into another conversation on an ongoing controversy and contemporary issue regarding abnormal psychology. Specifically, are there psychological syndromes and symptoms that appear only in certain cultures?
Because this topic is not covered explicitly in your course textbook, it is absolutely essential to read the Wen-Shing (2006) article, guidelines 1, 2 and 5 from the “Guidelines on Multicultural Education, Training, Research, Practice, and Organizational Change for Psychologists,” and your instructor’s initial post before responding.

As you enter into this conversation, carefully consider the historical information you read regarding the discovery and identification of symptoms and syndromes that could potentially be bound to specific cultures. Then, take a moment to relate this historical background to the current ethical, clinical, and social considerations when working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Interpret specific symptoms and syndromes as they relate to abnormal behavior from a culturally sensitive standpoint. Be sure to integrate knowledge of any appropriate cultural considerations psychologists must be aware of when working with individuals from backgrounds dissimilar to their own.

Again, the goal of this discussion forum is to have a single dynamic and respectful conversation about culturally bound symptoms and syndromes, not a series of 20 to 30 separate conversations. This means every post should be in response to another post. Your instructor will be posting the initial thread to which you will respond. Only start a new discussion thread if you want to address an entirely different theme or question(s) within the discussion subject area. Resisting the Culture of Overmedication video, and review the information in the textbook regarding psychotropic medication as well as any relevant Instructor Guidance.

Controversy: The Role of Big Pharma

Before working on this discussion, please read the article by Shulz (2004), watch the Generation RX: Resisting the Culture of Overmedication video, and review the information in the textbook regarding psychotropic medication as well as any relevant Instructor Guidance.

For this discussion, you will enter into another conversation on an ongoing controversy and contemporary issue regarding abnormal psychology. Specifically, what is the role of “big pharma” (i.e., major pharmaceutical companies that determine the ways in which health care issues are researched and publicized) in the diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology?

It is absolutely essential to read the article by Shulz (2004) and watch the Generation RX video because they provide insights into how issues regarding psychotropic medication are depicted in popular media. Be sure to read your instructor’s initial post before responding.

As you enter into this conversation, carefully consider the historical information you reviewed regarding big pharma’s impact and influence within abnormal psychology. Take a moment to relate this historical background to the current ethical, clinical, and social implications when considering the use of psychotropic medication for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Interpret specific symptoms and syndromes from big pharma’s advertising campaigns and critically evaluate and comment upon the necessity of these medications for the indicated psychiatric disorders.

Again, the goal of this discussion forum is to have a single dynamic and respectful conversation about big pharma’s role in the diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology, not a series of 20 to 30 separate conversations. This means every post should be in response to another post. Your instructor will be posting the initial thread to which you will respond. What do you think Christine Frederick feared when she said “Our greatest enemy is the woman with the career?”

Chapter 1:

1. What do you think Christine Frederick feared when she said “Our greatest enemy is the woman with the career?” Page 29

Christine Frederick’s quote went against what Ellen Richards was working towards. I think by her saying this, she was fearful that women would go into the workforce and forget about their home and role as a homemaker. She might have also feared that a woman would wait until she finished school to get married and have children. A woman with a career would have other priorities, not just to please her husband and to procreate. Instead, she suggested that a woman can practice her skills as in the home, for example decorating her house and planning balanced meals for her own children.

2. Ellen Richards was accepted in MIT as a “special student” because they didn’t want have the precedent of coeducation. Is this something that could still be happening in today’s society? A woman having to be unknown or not on a roster because of her gender?

It seems silly that in the 21st century, women can be rejected into schools because of their gender. I don’t think this is an issue in schools. I think it is more common in the work force, specifically in the writing world. Many female authors have pseudonames because publishers won’t even look at their books if they are written by females. Many famous books/series, for example the Harry Potter series written by J.K. Rowling, would never have been published.

Chapter 2:

1. Why did women carry a heavier burden during the domestic sanitary uplift?

It was easier for men to upkeep the outside of the home. They could hire someone to fix the plumbing or to aid with construction of the house. Women were responsible inside the home because they were deemed more fit. They had to make sure the home was clean and their kids were healthy. Although some middle/upperclass women could afford to pay for help, they still had to make sure everything was done right to avoid someone catching ill.

2. The end of the chapter states “we may find ourselves turning to those old texts on household sanitation and bacteriology for more than historical insight” (54). Do you think this is true or has our science come far enough?

Being in the science field has showed me that science has come so far in preventing the spread of diseases in everyday life. Every hospital/clinic I have volunteered/interned at has SDS books that can help anyone in any situation. Even in our homes, all of our cleaning supplies have warning signs and directions that help even the novice cleaner. I think the foreshadow or threat in this book is dramatic and incorrect. We also know many of the ways bacteria/germs were handled in the past were incorrect.

Economic Damages

You are to calculate economic damages from an (alleged) breach of contract of an exclusive apple production agreement, and present your findings in a written document.

On January 1, 2011 a small group of orchardists were provided by East-Northeastern Utah University (ENEUU) an exclusive license to grow and sell the Econolicious apple, in perpetuity. This is a delicious premium apple – once you’ve tasted the fruit of economics, you can’t go back.

On January 1, 2015 a second, less exclusive agreement was provided to another set of growers for theITAMeriffic apple… the exact same apple cultivar, but with a different name. The original growers assert that this is breach of contract, and have filed suit to recover damages. The alleged damages have two components: (1) foregone earnings from Econolicious that have already been planted, due to a decreased price stemming from increased competition; and, (2) foregone earnings from Econoliciousthat would have been planted in the absence of the breach of contract.

This is a real court case, and some of the data are privileged. The data that aren’t restricted by a NDA I will provide to you. Some of the data you may have to look up for yourself. For the rest, I will provide fake data. Plenty of that going around these days. Calculation of damages is actually quite simple, but needs to be done to a very high standard. No mistakes.

There are basically three steps to this project:

  1. Describe what you are doing. Describe the scenario, above, but also describe your approach to calculating the economic damages. The Econolicious apple is a so-called “club apple” and you should describe what that means.
  2. Calculate the costs of planting and growing Econolicious vs. the existing cultivar. (You get to name that one.) Here are some of the potential costs:
    • Planting/grafting costs
    • Removal costs for the old trees
    • Potentially different production costs (e.g., training, pruning, spraying) for the new trees
vs. the old trees; this may vary by age of the new trees
    • Potentially different marketing and packing costs
    • Royalties paid to ENEUU
    • Opportunity cost from old cultivar – lost revenue from the old variety that aren’t being
sold any more, as the trees were replaced
