Based on the information in Chapter 9: Case: Using the Internet to Find the Best Talent, review the human resource planning process and the previous readings from Chapter 6. Explain the relationship between the four activities of human resource planning and the organization’s strategic planning, development, and implementation.

Your paper should include in-text citations and references for at least three scholarly sources, in addition to the text, and be formatted according to APA style

You will complete a written assignment based on this week’s reading.

Again, this week you will write another short paper. Our topic this week is Human Resource Planning and Organizational Strategy. The paper should address organizational processes related specifically to human resource planning — and once again, I would like to see you apply these concepts in the context of your own organization. Your paper should be four to five pages excluding the title page and references.

First, the prompt requires you to discuss the relationship between human resource planning activities and the organization’s strategic development and implementation. This means you need to explain how human resource planning (recruiting, hiring, evaluating, supporting, promoting and firing) relates to the strategic direction of the organization as a whole. How do HR managers support organizational goals through people? See my guidance above on Fitz-enz’s book for some clues.

Next, describe the eight elements of the staffing process. Then, I suggest that you list the four activities related to human resource planning. Derive these from your textbook.

After that, describe the relationship between the eight elements and the four activities. How are they intertwined?

Explain the relationship between the four activities of human resource planning and the organization’s strategic planning, development, and implementation. This means that you need to explain how the four activities and how they affect the organization as a whole. Again, the Fitz-enz book may be helpful to you!

This may seem like a tall order, but if you follow my recommended structure below, you can master this assignment.

  1. APA formatted title page
  2. One strong introductory paragraph with a clear thesis statement
  3. One short paragraph summarizing how you think Human Resource planning relates to the strategic activities of an organization. You’ll explain these in detail later in the paper.
  4. One large paragraphs that briefly lists and explains the eight elements of the staffing process. Cite the textbook for support.
  5. One shorter paragraph that lists and explains the four activities of human resource planning.
  6. One large paragraph, explaining the relationship between the eight elements and the four activities — this is a larger explication of your first short paragraph (#3) that summarized your approach at the beginning of the paper.
  7. One short paragraph that summarizes figure 10.5 in the textbook. What does the diagram describe? Cite the textbook.
  8. One short paragraph that describes how the HR planning process affects the organization as a whole — especially in terms of vision, mission, and values. This is where you might cite the Fitz-enz book, if possible!
  9. One short paragraph about how you’ve seen this relationship play out in your own organization. How has this relationship worked for your organization — or has it worked at all? How might you help affect positive change in this regard?
  10. A strong conclusion paragraph that summarizes your thesis statement and the major points of your paper.
  11. An APA references page

One of the things that we are doing this week is discussing various logical fallacies that people are prone to fall into.  Explain the ad hominem fallacy in your own words, and, after you explain it, provide an example of it that you have come across in your life.

A. This week we are focused on learning how to think critically and logically.  Based on your experiences in life so far, what do you think are some common barriers that make it hard for people to think critically and logically?

B. Here is a quote from the 19th century English philosopher John Stuart Mill:

In the case of any person whose judgment is really deserving of confidence, how has it become so? Because he has kept his mind open to criticism of his opinions and conduct. Because it has been his practice to listen to all that could be said against him; to profit by as much of it as was just, and expound to himself, and upon occasion to others, the fallacy of what was fallacious. Because he has felt, that the only way in which a human being can make some approach to knowing the whole of a subject, is by hearing what can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinion, and studying all modes in which it can be looked at by every character of mind. No wise man ever acquired his wisdom in any mode but this; nor is it in the nature of human intellect to become wise in any other manner. The steady habit of correcting and completing his own opinion by collating it with those of others, so far from causing doubt and hesitation in carrying it into practice, is the only stable foundation for a just reliance on it: for, being cognizant of all that can, at least obviously, be said against him, and having taken up his position against all gainsayers knowing that he has sought for objections and difficulties, instead of avoiding them, and has shut out no light which can be thrown upon the subject from any quarter–he has a right to think his judgment better than that of any person, or any multitude, who have not gone through a similar process (Chapter 2 of On Liberty)

Summarize what this quote is saying in your own words and what it can teach us about thinking critically.

Evaluate the company’s mission statement, vision statement, motivation strategy, innovation strategy, and people strategy. If the organization does not have one or more of these, how does that affect the organization and its people?

Choose an organization according to the following: ( I choose Coca Cola Bottling –  is part of the Russell 2000)

Current employer

Most recent or former employer

Place of business that you have patronized or have been familiar with over a long period of time.

Avoid choosing an organization that is so large that historical data would be difficult to apply. Firms in the Russell 2000® index may fit well, whereas firms in the Dow 30 Industrial index probably do not.

The organization can be a start-up that you or a significant other may create in the future. For a start-up, focus on an entrepreneurial idea that is of substantive interest, so this project leaves you with a product you may leverage in the future.

Write a 1,050-word paper in which you address the following:

Identify the major components of the strategic management process.

Discuss how these components work together to create value for the organization.

Evaluate the company’s mission statement, vision statement, motivation strategy, innovation strategy, and people strategy. If the organization does not have one or more of these, how does that affect the organization and its people?

Explain the role of ethics and corporate social responsibility in strategic planning. How does this direct their strategy? How does the organization’s vison and mission align with your own values and vision? If you are currently working for the organization, how does your role influence this and vice versa?

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

In this section you will present several arguments arguing in favor of your thesis statement. Make sure you discuss how the Center used the score card quadrants to align with organizational strategy (or how it failed to do so).

he Balanced Scorecard & the Financial Perspective

Assignment Overview

In this module’s case assignment you will be introduced to the balanced scorecard concept and will begin to consider how organizations link strategy with the balanced scorecard approach. We will look at the interrelationship of strategy and the balanced scorecard approach in more depth later on in this course. For now, however, it is good to understand the fundamentals of the BSC and to consider examples of how organizations have integrated the BSC approach into their daily operations in a fashion that reflects the strategy of the respective organizations.

To prepare for this case assignment you are to start by reading the required readings identified on the background page. You’ll note that one of those articles includes:

Martello, M., Watson, J., & Fischer, M. (2008). Implementing a balanced scorecard in a not-for-profit organization. Journal of Business & Economics Research. 6(9), 67-80. Retrieved from http://journals.cluteonline.com/index.php/JBER/article/view/2471/2517

This is the case study you will be evaluating for this assignment. Note that there is an option to download the PDF file rather than using the PDF viewer on this page. This may save you some aggravation.

After reading this article, formulate an argumentative essay around the following thesis statement:

Cattaraugus County Rehabilitation Center did an effective job of implementing a balanced scorecard approach in a fashion that reflects their organizational mission and vision.

If you do not think this thesis is accurate, you can argue that the Center did not do an effective job.

Assignment Expectations

Your analysis should be structured in terms of the following four perspectives (you will be using essentially this same comparative evaluation framework for the first four modules of this course):

Introduction: In this part of your essay you will need to set up your argument by introducing your topic and presenting your position or thesis statement somewhere in this introductory paragraph.

Analysis: In this section you will present several arguments arguing in favor of your thesis statement. Make sure you discuss how the Center used the score card quadrants to align with organizational strategy (or how it failed to do so).

Conclusion: Wrap up your argument with a clear and cogent synopsis of your findings. Do your best to convince your reader (aka, your professor) as to your position.

Additional Instructions: Your argumentative essay should be 3 to 4 pages in length (not counting your title page or references). You must include a list of references. APA formatting is preferred. Do not paste in sections of text into your essay. All of your work must be written in your own words. It’s OK to use a short quote now and again, but quotations must be in quotation marks and properly cited. In-text citations should be used anytime you are borrowing somebody else’s ideas, or information. That is to say, if you are borrowing a thought from a publication from G. Jetson’s article written in 2010, that section of text must be followed with (Jetson, 2010). Quotations, data, and general ideas (put into your own words) should all be cited.
