“DNA and RNA, Genes, Mutations, and Gene Therapies”

Note: Online students, please respond to one (1) of the following four (4) bulleted items.

  • Examine three (3) differences between DNA and RNA then explain two (2) main reasons why DNA is the most favorable molecule for genetic material. Next suggest how RNA compares to DNA in regards to genetic material.
  • Go to The Guardian website and read the article titled “Mind-control device lets people alter genes in mice through power of thought” found here. Next discuss three (3) main points of the article you found most significant then explain two (2) ways the article you read relates to this week’s lesson. Provide examples of this relation with your response.
  • Mutations are the original source of genetic variation. Explain how mutations can be either beneficial or harmful then provide an example for each. Next identify a disease, which is caused by a mutation, and then describe the biological basis of your chosen disease. In your response be sure to note the exact disease causing mutation.
  • Briefly describe the biology behind DNA-based Vaccines and Gene Therapy. Next suggest what you believe are the major similarities and differences between these two (2) therapies. Which do you believe is the best option? Justify your response.

REPLY TO THIS STATMENT

DNA is an acronym for deoxyribonucleic acid, whereas RNA stands for ribonucleic acid. Even though both DNA and RNA carry genetic content, there are a number of differences between them. In review, DNA is composed of the sugar deoxyribose, whereas RNA consists of the sugar ribose. The only distinction between ribose and deoxyribose is based on the fact that ribose contains more –OH group than deoxyribose that contains –H connected to the second (2′) carbon ring. Secondly, carbon is a double stranded molecule whereas RNA is a single stranded molecule. Thirdly, DNA is stable under alkaline conditions whereas RNA is not stable (Kurth & Mochizuki, 2009). In general, DNA is the most favored genetic material because it is stable. In this case, RNA often undergoes hydrolysis about 100 times faster than DNA, an aspect that makes DNA a more stable molecule. Moreover, DNA is most favored because it is more easily repaired due to the presence of thymine instead of uracil. In this case, the cell establishes all uracil based found in DNA that have undergone cytosine deamination, and thus can repair the DNA molecule. Finally, DNA compares to DNA in regard to genetic material in that during base paring, Adenine often pairs with Thymine (AT) in DNA while Adenine pairs with Uracil (AU) in RNA. However, Guanine often pairs with Cytosine (GC) in both DNA and RNA. Reference Kurth, H. M., & Mochizuki, K. (2009). Non-coding RNA: A bridge between small RNA and DNA. Think back over conversations you have had with friends, family members, co-workers, or classmates.

Select a conversation in which the other person wanted to talk about something that was troubling him or her. As you replay this conversation in your mind, think about how well you did in terms of empathic listening.

Develop a 1,050-word analysis including:

  • Explain whether you found yourself being critical when the person really just needed someone to listen.
  • Identify whether you let the person know, by your words or actions, you cared about his or her dilemma, even if you were not able to help in any other way.
  • Analyze your listening performance.

Assignment 1: Biology Article

Due Week 5 and worth 120 points

Use the Internet and / or the Strayer Learning Resource Center to research aspects of biology.

Select an article from a magazine or newspaper that has something in it that pertains to biology. This will serve as the “target article” for this assignment. For instance, you can select an article about medicine, invasive species, nature, conservation, genetic technology, ecology, or any other topic that is related to biology. One purpose of this assignment is to help you become aware of how biology is related to your everyday life.

Write a one to three (1-3) page paper in which you:

  1. Summarize the article in one (1) or more paragraphs, using your own words. Be sure to identify the article using an in-text citation in the body of the paper, as well as a reference in the reference section.
  2. Explain how the article relates to this course. Identify which biological concepts from the course and / or text are relevant to the topic covered in the article. Citing the course text, discuss the ways in which this course does (or doesn’t) provide background information to help you understand the article and the larger issues surrounding it.
  3. Explain why the article caught your attention. Relate the article to your life and to issues that are important to you. Discuss how or if the scientific knowledge about the topic covered in the article affects you directly or indirectly.
  4. Discuss your opinion on how research on this topic should be funded. State whether you think taxpayer monies should support research on this topic or whether such research in this area should be funded by the private sector. Rate the importance of research on this topic, relative to other areas of research.

In addition to the target article, you should use at least one additional resource, such as your textbook or another article. You must have a reference section which contains an APA reference to your chosen article and all other sources. Additionally, you must provide in-text citations (in APA format) to your references in the body of the text. Integrate all sources into your paper using proper techniques of quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing, along with your in-text citations.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in biology.

Choose an industry you have not yet written about in this course, and one publicly traded corporation within that industry. Research the company on its own Website, the public filings on the Securities and Exchange Commission EDGAR database (http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml), in the University’s online databases, and any other sources you can find. The annual report will often provide insights that can help address some of these questions.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

Using this information identify predecessors in your project plan’s predecessor column. Complete the predecessor column by entering the line number of tasks that must be completed in order for each task to start. This will create your project timeline.

Assignment 2: LASA – Project Planning – Developing the Project Plan and Determining Critical Path

    1. Using the District4WarehouseMove WBS.xls provided, create a project plan for the District 4 Warehouse Move project. Use the PDF document, Project Plan Check – District4Move, to check your work to be sure you have created your starting project plan correctly. ProjectLibre is required for this task. If you have not yet downloaded ProjectLibre, please click here and follow the directions to do so now.

Note: you will need to insert a column to include your WBS codes, then you will need to sequence the tasks to show tasks by work package.
