This week the topic is The Physical Environment. After completing your weekly text reading, reviewing the additional resources provided, and in doing your own outside research complete the following case study:

Step 1: Select a setting in which you can complete a one-hour observation of infants and toddlers. This can be done in a public, private or in-home center. Please note, a facility director or supervisor must authorize all observations. Write detailed notes (that include specific examples) on the physical environment to include:

• Evidence of a safe environment
• Evidence of a healthy environment
• Evidence of a learning environment
• Evidence that the staff’s goal is to advance physical and intellectual competence of infants and toddlers
• Look for evidence that the program supports social and emotional development and that staff members provide positive guidance and discipline with infants and toddlers
• Look for evidence that the program strives to establish positive and productive relationships with families
• Look for evidence that the program is well run, purposeful and responds to participant’s needs
• Look for evidence that the staff members conduct themselves in a professional manner

Step 2: Compose a 1750-2000 word essay reflecting upon key concepts from this week’s assigned reading and what you learned about the physical environment from your observations. How did your observations compare with what you’ve read? Your essay should include at least three (3) citations. The sections should be clearly marked with headings so that your instructor knows which points you are addressing. Follow the guidelines for APA writing style. The title page and references page do not count towards the minimum word amount for this assignment.
