Dear students,

You will have an extra week to submit your journal. However, I would advise you to submit ASAP (original due date was this Wednesday, 3/11). By the time the 18th rolls around, you will have your midterm to prepare for (which is on the 23rd).

If you did poorly on the previous writing assignments or just want to improve on Journal 2, come see me during office hours for help with a topic. Remember: Absolutely no email/late submissions will be accepted. If you have a habit of running into technical difficulties, use a more reliable computer and submit with plenty of time to spare. If you do not submit a proper format (Word or PDF), you will receive a ‘0.’ Further, if you do not receive a Safe Assign score, you will receive a significant point deduction.

Below are a list of possible topics to help you choose what to write about (Choose a subtopic from lessons 3, 4, 5, or 6):

1. Federalism: Subtopic: Any issue you can personally relate to that has come under scrutiny because of conflict between national and state law

2. Civil Liberties: Subtopic: Choose any of the amendments and make a personal connection to the liberties afforded to you by that amendment

3. Media: Subtopic: If you pay close attention to politics, explore the implications of corporate ownership on the news you are receiving? Where do you get your political news from? Investigate its corporate sponsors, if any, and explain how this impacts the stories covered and how they are covered (slant, framing, etc.).

These are just to help those of you who might have a difficult time choosing a subtopic. You can choose any narrow topic within the approved chapters (3-6). But remember, you are not simply summarizing the subtopic. The bulk of your journal should be on personal reflection, so choose a topic you can relate to.

Earned Value Management (EVM)

Due Week 8 and worth 130 points

Use the Internet or the Strayer Library to research articles on EVM.

Project managers often use Earned Value Management (EVM) if they want to compare the status of their projects to their project plans. Using the same project from Assignment 3, develop a project scenario to explain the amount of work that you have completed with the funds allotted.

This assignment consists of two (2) sections:

  • An MS Project exercise
  • An EVM paper

You must submit both sections as separate files for the completion of this assignment. Label each file name according to the section of the assignment for which it is written. Additionally, you may create and / or assume all necessary assumptions needed for the completion of this assignment.

Section 1: MS Project Exercise

Assume that your project is using more resources (e.g., time, money, and / or other non-labor resources, etc.) than anticipated through 50% of the project duration.

1. Update the project schedule to reflect related resource changes.

2. Produce a series of EVM reports from MS project that illustrates your project’s performance. Note: Your reports should focus on the cost and schedule performance of the project.

Section 2: EVM Paper

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

3. Summarize the recourse changes of your project, and discuss the performance results of your project.

4. Determine one (1) performance measurement baseline for your MS Project. Justify your response.

5. Apply earned value analysis (EVA) in order to forecast future cost issues. Justify your response.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Appraise the process of determining the cost and relevant budget required for a project component.
  • Analyze quality assurance processes in project management.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in project estimating and budgeting.
  • Write clearly and concisely about project estimating and budgeting using proper writing mechanics.

FABLE NARATIVE

Option #1: Modern-Day Tale

Go to http://www.nationalgeographic.com/grimm/ to read one of the classic stories authored

by the Grimm Brothers in the nineteenth century. Identify the main idea/thesis and rewrite the

fairy tale into a story that applies to today’s society, ensuring that the story idea remains the

same. Just as with an essay, there must be details that support the thesis. Organize your tale

into an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Consider introducing the story in the introduction and creating a thesis statement at the end of

the introduction that contains the story’s moral as well as an overview of the story’s main

events.

Sample Thesis Statement: “When Cinderella disobeyed her step-mother and went to her high

school prom, she was grounded and wasn’t allowed to even attend classes, which resulted in

Child Protective Services removing the step-mother from the home and showing how good

always prevails over evil.”

After you create the thesis statement, rewrite the fable in the body paragraphs using

chronological order. Be sure to sum up the story’s main points as well as the moral in the

conclusion.

Poetry Writing Analysis

In a well-crafted essay of three to four pages (excluding the pages on which your own poem and the poem you are working with are placed), refer to our lecture and consider the following questions.

1.      Does your poem extend or argue with the tradition of the poem you selected to imitate?

2.      What relationship to historical context does your primary poem bear?

3.      What relationship to historical context does your own poem bear?

4.      What is the role your reader plays as a participant in creating the poem’s meaning?

5.      Look at William Wordsworth’s Preface to the Second Edition of Lyrical Ballads, particularly his concept of “the overflow of powerful emotion…recollected in tranquility” compared to T. S. Eliot’s Tradition and the Individual Talent, in which he rejects emotion: “It is neither emotion, nor recollection, nor, without distortion of meaning, tranquility” from which poetry is crafted. (These essays are online and easily found.)

Eliot argues that:

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things.

Given Eliot’s Modernist argument with Wordsworth the Romantic, where would you position your poem? Do you write from strong emotion? Do you recollect emotion in tranquility, or are you a cold craftsman?

This assignment asks you to understand the lecture material fully. You may wish to read Wordsworth’s essay, Preface to the Second Edition of Lyrical Ballads and T. S. Eliot’s Tradition and the Individual Talent on your own. Both essays are available online. It is recommended that you not conduct research outside of your text and the essays mentioned above, and that all sources used must be scrupulously cited in APA format.
