Argumentative Research Paper Guidelines

Select a topic that differs from the argumentative essay, but do not select topics listed below. Write an Argumentative Research paper that utilizes scholarly secondary sources, demonstrates familiarity with MLA (Modern Language Association) source documentation conventions, and demonstrates awareness of audience. I will pay particular attention to your use of MLA in-text source documentation conventions such as signal phrases, quotation conventions, and parenthetical notes. Whether using direct quotation, summary, or paraphrase, writers must include correct in-text citation conventions to acknowledge sources. Clearly distinguish your voice from the voices of your sources.

This research paper should project your voice, and include the following:

1. a well-defined thesis statement that includes an arguable claim and bold print. (See a model thesis statement on page 346 ).
2. an outline that aligns with the thesis statement (include with draft only).
3. Relevant background information, good reasons, and convincing evidence.
4. Counter argument(s) presented fully, fairly and objectively in a separate paragraph (or several separate paragraphs).
5. Clearly presented responses to counter arguments.
6. MLA style source documentation conventions within the research paper (signal phrases, parenthetical notes, quotation marks, block quotations, etc.) and on the Works Cited page (spacing, indentation, title distinctions, etc.). Insert no URLs in the body of the paper. Instead, use key words from title of source. .
7. Three scholarly sources (no Wikipedia). For online scholarly sources, check the Richland College Library Academic Search Complete data base. See the textbook for a model list of works cited (548).

Final Argumentative Research Paper

Upload the final Argumentative Research Paper (including the Works Cited page) to the Assignment link after considering feedback from peers and instructor. Revise and edit carefully. Double space all pages. Include page numbers. Use a 12 to 14-point font size. The Final Argumentative Research Paper should consist of 1,200-1,500 words, including the Works Cited page.

• First discuss what type of movement this movement is (Revolutionary, Conservative, Reactionary, Expressive, etc.)
• Now, think about the theories explaining social movements (Deprivation Theory, Structural Strain, Resource mobilization, etc). Discuss which theory best applies to this movement and why.
• Then discuss how society has changed from before the movement to now, if at all?
• Remember to give a brief description of the theory and movement type that you chose first.

As we can see from the last chapter, Social movements and social change can result from many different efforts, but often, change is the result of a group or sometimes even one person who refuses to be a victim and instead takes action. One person who helped increase momentum of a movement is Wael Ghonim. Ghonim used Facebook to organize protesters against the Egyptian government in 2010/2011.

Read the following articles (feel free to consult other resources, but be sure to cite them) and:

This essay must include a minimum of five sources. Three should be peer-reviewed sources, preferably from the APUS databases. From the library welcome page, click on Advanced Search at the bottom of the page and then check the “peer reviewed” sources box filter.

You may use eBooks; however, as discussed in your textbook, books generally are not as current as peer-reviewed articles. You may also use primary sources (interviews, statistics, etc); however, these primary sources should be obtained from experts within that field. Make sure to include the following sections in your essay:

and a conclusion.

Within the body of your essay, make sure to include the following in any order:

The background for your chosen topic,
the opposition – use an academic tone, and do not show bias,
the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents’ claims,
scholarly research,
your claim — use an academic tone, and do not show bias,
discuss the warrants for your claim and the opposition in order to find the common ground,
and show the common ground between your opponents’ claim and your claim.

After you have written your essay, please make sure to revise the content of your essay. Lastly, be sure to edit your essay by checking grammar, format, and smaller technical details. Please make sure your essay is written in third person.

The Annotated Bibliography

An annotated Bibliography (AB) is due with your Rogerian essay. Using the MLA guide, list each source as it will appear on the Works Cited page of your essay. Summarize each source in two or three grammatically-correct sentences. These short summaries are the “annotations.”

Augmenting the steps to writing an argumentative research paper is information about proper documentation. The Rogerian System, an important aspect of a well-planned paper, should be studied carefully.

Part 2: Expressing Yourself Informally

For the Unit 4 Assignment, you will write a 1–1.5-page, double spaced, informal and personal blog post on an issue that is in some way relevant to your field of study and that you have personal experience with.

According to The Social Psychology Network, a blog, “short for “web log,” is an online journal or record of sequential postings with news, commentary, or other material” (2017). Like an essay, a blog post establishes and develops a clear point about a topic or issue. Depending on the topic, audience, and purpose, a blog can be formal or informal. A blog written by an individual, for example, tends to be about his or her experience with the topic and is written in first person.

Imagine for this Assignment that you have created your own blog site and that you are writing a post for your blog site. This specific blog post should establish a clear main point about your chosen topic, use your personal experience to develop that main point, and establish a connection with your non-professional audience through showing them how your experience might be of value in helping them in some way.

Examples might include:

• If you are in the medical field and have experience with taking care of family members who are sick, you might write a blog post to other caretakers who are tending to family members, perhaps showing them a way they can avoid the stress that caretaking will create for them.
• If you are in the law enforcement field, though you may not have experience with being a police officer, you might use your experience as a parent to write to other parents about what they might do to help their children to not get involved in gangs, if you have any relevant experience with it or know people who have.
• If you are in the field of education, you may not be an experienced teacher with a degree, but you no doubt have experience either as a student or parent and could write a blog post to other first year college students, offering them a suggestion for how to manage their time or avoid procrastination on assignments.
