Cultural competency in nursing is most essential in providing quality patient care.

The importance of competency based nursing cannot be over emphasized. A culturally competent health system can only exist with culturally competent nurses (Green & Reinckens, 2013). This is an indispensable tool of patient-centered care necessary for nurses to practice efficiently and effectively in a diverse cultural based healthcare system. A culturally competent nurse is able to meet the needs of patient irrespective of race, value, culture, belief, religion, socio-economic background or political orientation. A cultural competent nurse must identify their own beliefs, culture, and value system as well as that of the patient avoiding bias and stereotyping (Green & Reinckens, 2013). A culturally competent based nurse must possess effective communication skills both verbal and non-verbal as this will help to identify and understand the patient’s healthcare needs. By identifying the patient’s needs, the nurse is able to gain insight in developing a plan of care that is most suitable for that specific patient. Culturally competence nursing involves improving patient outcomes, less hospitalization and healthcare cost saving for the patient and family.

Cultural competency in nursing is most essential in providing quality patient care. Cultural competence requires the nurse to be sensitive to patient‘s cultural needs predispositions and health risks that are related to specific cultures, addressing these as needed. This writer work in a Care Center that is much diversified culturally. There is this patient that will not respond to a female staff in the early hours of the day for cares. It was a challenge until the investigation revealed that in that patient’s culture only their wives are allowed to see them before 5.am. This patient felt honored and respected after the investigation. It was wired for the nurses in the unit, but a great accomplishment for the patient. Indeed, patient satisfaction is Patient- Centered care which every culturally competent nurse must practice in this diverse population.

This week’s graded discussion topic relates to the following Course Outcomes (COs).

  • CO1 Utilize prior knowledge of theories and principles of nursing and related disciplines to explain expected client behaviors, while differentiating between normal findings, variations, and abnormalities. (PO 1)
  • CO3 Utilize effective communication when performing a health assessment. (PO 3)

The topic this week asks you to apply what you have learned to the following case study.

As the school nurse working in a college health clinic, you see many opportunities to promote health. Maria is a 40-year-old Hispanic who is in her second year of nursing school. She complains of a 14-pound weight gain since starting school and is afraid of what this will do to both her appearance and health if the trend continues. After conducting her history, you learn that she is an excellent cook and she and her family love to eat foods that reflect their Hispanic heritage. She is married with two school-age children. She attends class a total of 15 hours per week, plus she must be present for 12 hours of labs and clinical. She maintains the household essentially by herself and does all the shopping, cooking, cleaning, and chauffeuring of the children. She states that she is lucky to get 6 hours of sleep per night, but that is okay with her. She lives 1 hour from campus and commutes each day. Using Healthy People 2020 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and your text as a guide, answer the following questions.

  1. What additional information would you like to gather from Maria?
  2. What are Maria’s real and potential health risks?
  3. Why is Maria’s culture important when obtaining the health assessment?
  4. Pick one of Maria’s health risks. What would be one reasonable short-term goal for this risk?
  5. What nursing interventions would you incorporate into Maria’s plan of care to assist her with meeting your chosen goal? Please provide rationale for your selections.
  6. Class,

As we begin this week starting to talk about Healthy People 2020, I am looking forward to your input and answers to the questions with the scenario and Maria. As you are reviewing the Healthy People 2020 new topic areas, in this week’s lesson, what are your thoughts on them? Do any of these topics apply to your current workplace setting? Can you share an example of the scenario or a workplace example, and would these new areas benefit you in your practice?

Group formation stages: the five stages of group development are forming, storming, and norming, performing and adjourning.

Groups

According to Rodriguez, Ferreira, Mishima & et al. (2016), group dynamics is a form of communication, interaction and collective relationship that provides learning and education for group interest. Group interacts, exchange opinions and communicates to accomplish better outcomes. Group dynamics are essential for leadership and management of any healthcare organization.

Group belongings: The group I am currently involved in my organization is the unit based council. It is an open group committee for the psychiatric department. Although the purpose is to collaborate with staff for our department improvement, it is open to employees and management for the development and growth of patient care. It uses evidence-based practice to improve nursing practice. It empowers employees to provide excellent care for a better outcome. It focuses on things that influence nursing standard, quality improvement, patient safety and care. It gives nurses shared decision-making skills and encourages nurse to take shares governance, voice, and ownership of patient care to make change possible for better patient outcomes. We meet twice a month to discuss any issues or solution to problems in the department, and it is a paid or clock-in education in-service.

Group formation stages: the five stages of group development are forming, storming, and norming, performing and adjourning. The forming stage of group development involves group orientation, guidance, and direction. This stage includes the gathering of strangers to form common goals, impression and seeking ways to known and understand each other. The storming stage evaluates prospective leaders among the group, rules are created, and individual members struggle for power or authority in the group. Norming is group unity showing interpersonal relationships. Here, members gather, contribute, maintain and tries to solve group problems. In performing stage, subgroups are created, and group morale is high, and the members are working together for group goals. The final step of group development is adjourning. It involves rewarding members for their contributions.

Group role and leadership strategies: during the formation of unit-based council and meeting involve anxiety, vision, and communication. Leadership strategies involve commitment, delegation and open-minded in carrying out group mission.

In conclusion, group communications are needed to assess and advance group mission adequately. In healthcare, nursing leadership is necessary to inspire members and contribute to group success.

The leadership potential of stewardship in nursing requires new models of delivery of care, and we need to address the ever-changing nature of the work of a nurse

Please do a paragraph about this post with this instruction .

post most have 4 or more sentences .

you also have to have a high quality post from a content perspective. This means it also needs to do more than agree with or praise a class mate. If you agree with a classmate, explain why, give an example, share what you learned in the reading

When nurses work together, patient care and the workplace atmosphere improves. Yet, so often nurses become too busy to effectively collaborate with one another, which can increase stress levels among the nursing team. Creating a workplace that values teamwork can not only improve existing staff relationships, but it can help temporary nurses feel welcomed if the hospital needs to employ a nurse staffing agency. Three strategies to boost nurse teamwork:1. foster a culture of respect,2. start huddles,3. have nurse mangers involved (Pasqual, 2016).I will encourage open communication, and having each staff member opinion’s on any new implementation that will benefit our staff and our patients.

The leadership potential of stewardship in nursing requires new models of delivery of care, and we need to address the ever-changing nature of the work of a nurse (Fouche, 2011). Servant leadership as a leadership philosophy was first defined by Robert K. Greenleaf. He described servant leaders as those who achieve results for their organizations by attending to the needs of those they serve.Greenleaf proposed that leadership was about serving others including employees, other stakeholders, and society.

Developing nursing stewardship skills is being a truly advocate and feel the passion for what you and the ones you care for.For that I will look to the needs of the staff and continually asks how they can help them solve problems and promote their personal development. I would encourage open communication, daily unit huddles, coaching employees, clear direction, respectful atmosphere, nonpunitive environment, and shared responsibility for team success. As a nurse steward is fundamental to focus in the needs of others without focusing on our own rewards. Steward leadership is caring leadership and helps to build trust because followers believe that their leader genuinely cares about their welfare.

Developing and Refining Research Problems

In this first component of the Course Project, you formulate questions to address a particular nursing issue or problem. You use the PICOT model—patient/population, intervention/issue, comparison, and outcome—outlined in the Learning Resources to design your questions.

To prepare:

  • Review the article, “Formulating the Evidence Based Practice Question: A Review of the Frameworks,” found in the Learning Resources for this week. Focus on the PICOT model for guiding the development of research questions.
  • Review the section beginning on page 71 of the course text, titled, “Developing and Refining Research Problems” in the course text, which focuses on analyzing the feasibility of a research problem.
  • Reflect on an issue or problem that you have noticed in your nursing practice. Consider the significance of this issue or problem.
  • Generate at least five questions that relate to the issue which you have identified. Use the criteria in your course text to select one question that would be most appropriate in terms of significance, feasibility, and interest. Be prepared to explain your rationale.
  • Formulate a preliminary PICO question—one that is answerable—based on your analysis. What are the PICO variables (patient/population, intervention/issue, comparison, and outcome) for this question?
  • Using the PICOT variables that you determined for your question, develop a list of at least 10 keywords that could be used when conducting a literature search to investigate current research pertaining to the question.

To complete:

Write a 3- to 4-page paper that includes the following:

  • A summary of your area of interest, an identification of the problem that you have selected, and an explanation of the significance of this problem for nursing practice
  • The 5 questions you have generated and a description of how you analyzed them for feasibility
  • Your preliminary PICOT question and a description of each PICOT variable relevant to your question
  • At least 10 possible keywords that could be used when conducting a literature search for your PICOT question and a rationale for your selections
