Unionization and the Nursing Profession

Question Description

Discussion: Unionization and the Nursing Profession

Unionization is a highly charged topic. No matter what your beliefs or thoughts are on the subject, one thing is clear—nurse managers have a significant responsibility to promote the goals of their organizations while appreciating the labor concerns that may prompt employees to join unions. Beyond that, it is helpful to reflect on the core values of nursing and consider the extent to which they align with unionization.

To Prepare

  • Review the information in the Learning Resources. Conduct additional research on unionization in health care.
  • Consider the professional basis of nursing and the presence of unions in health care. Does unionization conflict with a professional nursing orientation?
  • Reflect on the experiences you have had working in unionized settings, or consider what would be required of you in such a setting if you do not have that experience.
  • Consider how you would address transitioning from being a member of a collective bargaining unit to being a manager who cannot be a member of a collective bargaining unit. How you might prepare to make this sort of transition?

BY DAY 3

Post your position on whether unionization aligns with or conflicts with a professional nursing orientation and what this may mean for the role as a nurse manager. Share your experiences working in a unionized setting or describe what might be required of you when transitioning from one circumstance to another.

Develop a philosophy that supports advanced nursing practice reflecting the values, beliefs, and cultural competencies relative to nursing practice, science, and theory.

In Unit 9, you will present your philosophy of nursing. The presentation should include the meta-paradigms and other key components learned in the course. Your presentation should bring together the theory that best fits your concept of advance practice nursing, the model that you will use to translate this into practice, and your final philosophy of advance practice nursing related to your role after graduation. Unit 9 assignment is not an “add-on” of Unit 3 assignment.

Be sure to read directions for Unit 9 Assignment carefully.

Bringing It All Together

This Assignment addresses this course outcome:

MN502-4: Develop a philosophy that supports advanced nursing practice reflecting the values, beliefs, and cultural competencies relative to nursing practice, science, and theory.

Now that you have spent the last 8 weeks discussing theory development and exploring models and philosophies that guide advance practice nursing, it is time for you to put it all together. In this Assignment, you will create a presentation using any form of presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint®, Prezi™, Movenote™, Powtoons™, Slidedog™, and so on). Your presentation should bring together the theory that best fits your concept of advance practice nursing, the model that you will use to translate this into practice, and your final philosophy of advance practice nursing related to your role after graduation.

Please remember that your presentation should contain slides that have bullet points. The bullets should number no more than four to six per slide. The bullet point is not written as a complete sentence. It contains key words. You, as the presenter will explain in depth what each bullet point means in the audio portion of the presentation. Slides may contain graphics, but should be uncluttered. Background and font colors should be of sufficient contrast to make reading them easy on the eyes. Attention to colors should be paid so that a person who is colorblind can easily read the presentation.

Assignment Details

The presentation should consist of a series of slides that include:

  • Title Slide: A title slide that identifies the title of the presentation and name of the student.
  • Introduction Slide: An introduction slide that includes brief information about you and your program track. The slide should also explain to the audience the purpose of the presentation.
  • Model Slides: The third and fourth slides will address your chosen model. The bullet points should consist of the specific characteristics of the model. You will need at least one citation that identifies where the model came from. Your audio will expound upon the model and what the characteristics mean. The fourth slide should include why you chose the model and how you will apply it in practice.
  • Theory Slides: The next three slides will focus on your chosen theory. The first slide should present your theory and why you chose it. The next slide would present the key concepts of the theory and how it has been used to date in past research no older than 5 years ago. The third slide will discuss how you will use this theory in practice as an advance practice nurse upon graduation.
  • Philosophy Slide: The next area will consist of one slide that presents your philosophy of advance practice nursing in the post-graduate role you will assume. The philosophy statement will consist of one to three sentences that distill the essence of what you believe advance practice nursing is and your conception of nursing as a profession. It is written in the first person and present tense. It is a personal statement of your beliefs about the profession of nursing. This should present guiding statements for your future practice in the advanced practice role. An example of a philosophy statement might read this way: Advanced practice nursing takes the art and science of nursing to a level of “other” and “self” interacting together to reach a state of optimal wellness guided with compassion and love for the culture of the “other.”
  • Graphical Slide: The next-to-last slide will be a graphical representation of how the model, theory, and your philosophy fit together.
  • Conclusion Slide: The last slide will be a conclusion that brings together everything you have presented. It is not a summary that just reiterates what you presented. It is a judgment about what you presented and bring the audience home, ending the presentation on a positive note about the future.

You will need supporting citations for your theory and model slides, and possibly for your philosophy, as appropriate. You will include the citations where appropriate and your very last slide will be a reference slide.

The total slide count should not exceed 15 slides. This does not include the reference slide(s) or the title slide.

Benefits Of Simulation, HER, and Virtual Learning In Nursing Education

It provides students with opportunities to practice their clinical and decision-making skills through various real-life situational experiences. With realistic clinical scenarios, simulation-based educational interventions in nursing can train novice as well as experienced nurses, helping them develop effective non-technical skills, practice rare emergency situations, and providing a variety of authentic life-threatening situations. The advantages of simulation-based educational interventions include the ability to provide immediate feedback, repetitive practice learning, the integration of simulation into the curriculum, the ability to adjust the difficulty level, opportunities to individualize learning, and the adaptability to diverse types of learning strategies. “Simulation (i.e., the use of mannequins, models, and scenarios in place of live patients) has long been used to augment learning in the health care professions and provides a safe, acceptable environment for practicing skills. It also eliminates risks inherent in practicing health care skills on live patients” (Bearnson and Wiker, 2005).

Can Technology Be Used To Replace Clinical Hours In Nursing Education?

Schools that once relied on the combination of classroom education and hands-on experience in a clinical environment began to mix in time in a simulation lab, where nursing students could work with highly sophisticated mannequins able to display a range of symptoms and react in real-time to treatment. Based on recent studies up to 50% simulation can be effectively substituted for traditional clinical learning experiences under the right conditions. Certain guidelines has to be followed in order for technology to be replaced with a certain percentage of clinical hours.

Limitations On Using Technology To Replace Clinical Hours In Nursing Education And Is It Allowed By State Board

Clinical learning experiences has to include actual hours of practice in nursing skills, computer labs, simulated clinical experiences that has to have hands on supervising by faculty. There also has to be hands on supervised clinical care. The State Board of Nursing does allow some technology to be replaced with clinical hours in nursing education. “Anational simulation study by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing on replacing clinical hours with simulation in prelicensure nursing education concluded that up to half of traditional clinical hours could be substituted with high-quality simulation experiences and yield comparable end-of-program educational outcomes” (LeFlore and Thomas, 2016).

Turner Week 7 Initial Post

Benefits and limitations of the use of technology in nursing education

I am an avid supporter of the sim lab. The sim lab is beneficial to nursing students because it allows them to practice and gives them comfort in attempting patient care. The sim lab allows for accidents without actually causing patient harm. A sim lab is especially beneficial to those students who don’t already work in patient care and needs practice to possibly take care of patients. By repeated practice, the student nurse can get somewhat acclimated to treating a patient. On the other hand, the limitations to a sim lab is that the patient isn’t real. There are all different kinds of patients that nurses treat, for instance, hard sticks (regarding blood draws/IV’s), angry patients, elderly patients, patient’s with alcohol withdrawal, and the list goes on and on. Unfortunately with the sim lab, there’s only the one patient that the students are dealing with. It doesn’t teach students about a patient refusing medicine, bodily fluids being excreted, aspirations while attempting to take medicines, and so on.

Using technology to replace clinical hours

Although I am for the sim lab, I do not think that it can totally replace clinical hours. The sim lab can be used prior to clinical hours, then maybe in the middle of clinical hours, but not totally replace it. Although the sim lab can help prepare students for real patient care, students still need actual clinical hours to experience real patient care.

Does the State Board allow sim lab?

The State Board of Nursing does allow my institution to have a sim lab. We normally have sim lab at least once each semester. We have sim lab towards the end of our semester, however, it is still helpful. I enjoy sim lab because it allows us to reflect on the situation and our actions and how we can better our actions the next time.

Nurse practice involvement through time.

Topic 3 DQ 1, Nurse practice involvement through time.

Nursing, along with all the medical field, is in a constant state of evolution. This is a topic of much debate with most clinical staff members. It doesn’t matter where you work, you will always hear the rumblings of having to change the way you do this or that. I learned early on in my career that change is inevitable, and to embrace it. Because from change we have developed Evidence-based practice and honed our professional skills to care for our patients in the best way.

From the very beginning of what was the most basic idea of nursing, there was always change. Prior to Christianity and through the middle ages, men were the primary caregivers to the sick. After the middle ages the industrial world took hold and men flocked to those jobs leaving a gap in caring for the sick, that women began filling the role of. (Whitney, 2018). During wars and battles, it was still primarily men that took this role, leaving the battlefield and working in the military hospitals. It was during one of these wars, the Cri mean War that you begin to see more women on the front lines of healthcare. Though one of the few women in nursing at the time, Florence Nightingale was put in charge of a hospital in Crimea. “ Nightingale and her nurses discovered overcrowded, filthy living conditions that were unsanitary and infested with bugs and rodents. Clean water was not available, nor were effective sewer or drainage system” (Whitney, 2018). This is often thought of as the beginning of modern medicine. The ANA defines nursing practice as “a scientific method designed to deliver the very best in-patient care, through five simple steps, assessment, diagnosis, outcomes/planning, implementation, and evaluation” (“What is nursing?”, n.d.) You can see this practice utilized by Nightingale and her nurses during this time. Throughout the modern history of nursing you find many influential nurses revolutionizing what it meant to be a nurse during that time, subsequently changing the entire dynamic of the profession itself. From Linda Richards who “established and headed a number of training schools” ( “Nursing Timeline, n.d.) in the 1870’s, to Elizabeth Grace Campbell Neill whose “greatest contribution to the profession of nursing was the creation of nurse registration” (“Nursing Timeline, n.d.). You also have Mary Adelaide Nutting who not only graduated in the first class of Johns Hopkins Training School for Nurses ,” But went on to be a “nurse educator and writer” and “She became the first nurse to hold a university professorship” ( “Nursing Timeline, n.d.). Many of these greats of the time began institutions that are still around today and play a large role in dynamics of how the profession researches, finds a need, and manages changes needed for best practice.

Describe the difference between a nursing practice problem and a medical practice problem

1.) PICOT is utilized by the health care community to identify and study a nursing or medical practice problem. Consequently, PICOT examples that may provide insight into the use of the PICOT process, may not be relevant to nursing practice as they are based on a medical practice problem.

Describe the difference between a nursing practice problem and a medical practice problem. Provide one example of each. Discuss why is it important to ensure your PICOT is based on a nursing practice problem.

2.) Nursing research is used to study a dilemma or a problem in nursing. Examine a problem you have seen in nursing. Provide an overview of the problem and discuss why the problem should be studied. Provide rational and support for your answer.
