Individual Writing Assignment:

Write a 4-5 page paper answering the following questions succinctly and in order.  Please number each answer to correspond with the question.

1. List and describe in chronological order the major legal occurrences that formed the basis of American corporate power.
2. Describe the social doctrine that Greider proposes as a way to reform corporate behavior.
3. List as many instances as you find in Chapter 7 of ways that the government has assisted private enterprise.  Discuss if these instances have helped or hurt the public.
4. Based on what you’ve learned in this class and considering Chapter 8, describe and explain the 2-3 most important changes you feel should be made in our economic system.

For this assignment you will create a Socratic dialogue. The dialogue will be completed in two parts. The first part will be 1–2 pages of notes to help you generate the arguments and analysis that will become a part of your dialogue in Part II.

Part I

1. Identify a belief. This can be a religious belief, an ethical belief, political belief, or any other one about which reasonable minds can disagree. Beliefs that are held by the vast majority of people (such as a widely accepted scientific fact) are not good choices for this assignment). A good topic will have reasonable evidence and reasoning supporting both sides.
2. Consider other points of view, or counter-arguments. Think about what you find persuasive about these counter-arguments, as well as how you might argue against them. Try to keep an open mind. Remember, we are engaging in philosophical dialogue, not trying to win an argument.
3. Examine the multiple points-of-view and weigh the evidence. Identify any unsupported assumptions or holes in the argument.
4. Consider the consequences of the beliefs presented. Philosophical thinking is an ongoing process, so it is important to identify questions for further thinking and to wonder about factors and circumstances that might change your view about a particular question.

Part II

Using the analysis from Part I, write a 2-page dialogue between Socrates and a person of your choosing (i.e., the Interlocutor) that examines the belief.

1. Have the Interlocutor present the belief and reasons you identified in step 1 of Part I.
2. Have Socrates pose questions that encourage the Interlocutor to consider other points-of-view as well as any problems with their argument, drawing upon the multiple points-of-view you identified in steps 2 and 3 of Part I, as well as the potential consequences of a given position as identified in step 4 of Part I.
3. Make sure your dialogue arrives at a conclusion. Keep in mind that it may be different from the belief or point of view you started with, and could be somewhat open-ended. As you searched for reasons that support your belief or point of view, you may have also come across reasons that challenge your beliefs. Don’t hide from these challenges. Remember, philosophy requires us to examine and even question our beliefs. If you find yourself more persuaded by the other points of view, don’t despair! Unlike a formal debate, the kinds of arguments we make while engaging in philosophical thinking are open to revision.

Today’s generation is seeing tremendous changes in how business is done throughout the world, and how society in general responds to social, and cultural change in ways that has never been seen before.  Fifty years ago diplomacy among nations was substantially different from what we see today.  Fifty years ago it would have been unheard of for women to negotiate diplomatic issues.  However, today it has become the norm.  While not every change is accepted worldwide, religion has become a key factor in how business is conducted.  In the United States not only does religion play an integral part of politics but, one must be accepting of the other cultures that have emerged, such as Gay Rights, inter-racial and inter-religious marriages.  Religion and the acceptance of religion has been so highly regarded by nations that the mere mention of religious clerics becoming involved in any type of national business is to the point that “one of the titles of the bishop of Rome is pontifex maximus, or “greatest bridge builder.” In Poland, John Paul II, helped construct a bridge that would ultimately restore the connection between Europe’s East and West.”(Albright, 36)  While this is how one of the greatest popes of modern times was viewed, it does not only apply to Christianity.  Many leaders in the Middle East are viewed in the same way and are held to the same regard.  This has all come at the expense of the mixing of the very many cultures.  Religions and cultures have been joined to the point the finding the original culture is next to impossible.  We have come to accept diversity in marriage and religion. 

Question

       How has the mixing of religions and cultures created a greater level of diversity and affected people worldwide, so that what was not accepted fifty years ago, even thirty years ago is now considered normal, everyday events.
