What are the 2 forces from history that Portier argues have shaped the cultural ideals in the U.S.? Write 1 good sentence about each force IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

You only need to read the first half of the pdf for Tuesday (pages 46-54). We’ll read the rest for Thursday. You’re already familiar with the author of this chapter, so we can move to the questions. The goal of this reading is to get you to think about the way the modern U.S. context shapes our perception of religious traditions. For those of you who grew up here in the U.S., this may help you understand things about your own understanding of religion. For those of you from other contexts, this will help you better understand why people in the U.S. think about religion the ways they do.

1. What are the 2 forces from history that Portier argues have shaped the cultural ideals in the U.S.? Write 1 good sentence about each force IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

2. Portier explains that one of those two forces has become more influential than the other. He names it “modernity” and says that it has influenced how we perceive “religion”. IN YOUR OWN WORDS try to explain how modernity has changed our approach to religious traditions.

3. Portier says that modernity has turned religious traditions into voluntary associations in the U.S. (in other words, groups that we get to choose between freely). He says that this transformation has had 3 key effects. IN YOUR OWN WORDS, write 1 sentence about each of the 3 (hint: look at pages 49-51).

4. Finally, read the section titled “Defining Religion” closely. Like Prothero did with Huston Smith, Portier is arguing against the views of other scholars in this section. So, write 1-2 sentences describing the view that Portier is criticizing (arguing against). Then, write 1-2 sentences about why the term “worship” is important according to Portier.

First define ethics from a professional source, not the dictionary or encyclopedia

First define ethics from a professional source, not the dictionary or encyclopedia. HINT: use the definition from an organization with Ethics in the Title. Discuss your thoughts and feelings about ethics professionally and then personally in managerial decision-making. Then, discuss the principle of fairness remembering that what may be fair to you is unfair to someone else and vice versa. As organizations have not really changed over time, why do you think ethics and fairness are still problems?

Remember the term Ponzi scheme came when Charles Ponzi was arrested in 1920 for 86 counts of mail fraud. His predecessor, William Miller, bilked $1 million in funds in 1899 from investors. This would be equivalent to $25 million today! So while Bernie Madoff is the most recent example of a Ponzi scheme, there were others more than 100 years ago that did exactly the same thing using the exact same process.

Also, note that the Robber Barrons of the US reigned during what is termed the Gilded Age of the 1800s to amass wealth. They used child labor, did not give time off to workers, and created Monopolies that set prices so high that people had no choices. Today, we do not allow monopolies and companies must get approval from the Federal Government to join if they are two large companies. This is meant to protect US citizens and workers from a company becoming a monopoly.

Clearly, ethics have been a problem in the US since the 1800’s. While we discuss new problems, it has been a problem for more than 200 years. Why do you think, even with the laws we have that ethics and fairness have always been a problem?

Article Critique This assignment provides you with an opportunity to read an article and then to share your thoughts about the article by critiquing the details, including the decisions made. In order to access the resource below, you must first log into the myCSU Student Portal and access the Academic OneFile database within the CSU Online Library This article includes details and assertions about the ethical choices/decisions made by Edward J. Snowden, a former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor. Here is the reference citation for the article: Securing our liberty. (2013). Commonweal, 140(12), 5. After reading the article, draft a two-page response by discussing the U.S. government’s decision to acquire phone and internet data without disclosing its intentions to citizens. For this assignment, consider the NSA as an organization (i.e., business) and Snowden as a manager. How have the decisions of this event impacted the fairness of the U.S. government, its citizens, and Snowden? How did ethics, perhaps, influence Snowden’s decision to leak information? In this event, what is the greater good and also the consequences/sacrifices of that greater good? Based on the details of this event, what can we learn about making important decisions as a leader and manager? This event was covered by several news and media organizations, so there should be plenty of articles in the library. Conduct a bit more research in the online library related to this event involving Edward Snowden and the U.S. government—see what else you can discover about the event to determine an appropriate punishment, if any, for Snowden’s conduct. Include at least one additional source from the library in your response. The purpose of this assignment is for you to think critically about managers (and other leaders) making important decisions, and the process managers use to make important decisions. Consider how important it is to collect all of the facts before making an important decision, such as those involving fairness and ethics. Use APA Style to format your response.

Select two journal articles that address the linkage between poverty and discrimination reflected in the conditions of racial and ethnic minority populations.

Poverty and discrimination are linked as one often leads to the other and vice versa. The poor are a target for discrimination due to their circumstances, while discrimination due to ethnicity, race, or gender reduces the number of economic opportunities an individual might get. In this module, you explore the segments of the population that are more likely to be poor. You also examine the reasons for the poverty of these segments and its implications for social policy development.

Research the link between poverty and discrimination using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet.

  • Select two journal articles that address the linkage between poverty and discrimination reflected in the conditions of racial and ethnic minority populations.
    • Be sure to select one article that addresses poverty and discrimination in the United States and one in any other country.
    • Make sure the articles include examples of social policies that have attempted to address these issues.

Respond to the following:

  • How is the linkage between poverty and discrimination reflected in the conditions of racial and ethnic minority populations?
  • Identify two examples of social policies that have attempted to address these issues and discuss their effectiveness.
  • Support your positions with material from your library research.

Write your initial response in a minimum of 200–300 words. Apply APA standards to citation of source

EXAMPLE of how to do the assignment  : Introduction Home Economics- Negin Amanatby Negin Amanat – Monday, September 14, 2015, 4:33 PM

1) What was the main focus of home economics at the turn of the century regarding women’s history?

the main focus was on bringing professionalism into the field which means more careers for women and less womanhood domesticity which was mainly the only concept of home economics at the time.

2) What did Margaret Rossiter clarify regarding her brilliant piece of muckraking scholarship?

She pointed out that home economics is only seen as another gendered profession which can never get credit for its professionalism unless men step in the field. Her point was made clear as home economics received the institutional support and legitimacy in the 1960s only when men moved in the field.
