In this class, we have discussed the importance of circular models of sustainability as opposed to linear models of how things have been in the recent past, or are today. Begin by discussing the difference between linear and circular flows of materials out of nature, through the economy, and back into nature, making sure to discuss how the concept of the materials cycle fits into your explanation. Then, explain what a circular approach to sustainability for New York City would look like in your vision of making things better, using specific examples from one, two, or all three of the following systems: waste management, energy, and food. What would you recommend as ways to make these systems circular instead of linear?

In your essay you MUST:

Explain what a circular model of sustainability is and how it differs from a linear organization of society and economy.
Demonstrate that you understand the concepts of the Materials Cycle covered in class.
Propose your own vision of a circular model of sustainability for NYC
Be NYC specific in your proposals
Be specific in your proposal about which of the three systems (waste management, energy, food) you are referring to.
Reference and incorporate ideas/concepts from at least one reading in Weeks 1 or 2 (including the assigned articles and/or The Soil Will Save Us), citing properly.
Reference and incorporate information from least one article from Week 3 (waste management), Week 4 (energy) or Week 5 (food systems), citing properly.
Reference the required readings in a substantive and not trivial way. Show that you are using ideas from these readings to build your argument.
