LASA 2: Putting the Puzzle Together

Every group, whether social or professional, has roles that need to be filled in order for the group to function effectively. Sometimes, people choose the role they want to play. At other times, people may naturally fall into a role without even realizing it. Research group roles or group dynamics using your online library resources, and the Internet. Write an essay on the topic. Address the following:

  1. What types of group roles are there? Name and describe at least six different roles.  Also, note that similar roles are known by different names, for example, leader and facilitator. What you call a role is not as important as doing a good job of explaining the purpose and duties of each role.
  2. Can some roles have more than one person in that role in one group? If so, which roles are they? Which roles, if any, cannot have more than one person in the role in one group? Why?
  3. Can you rank the roles in order of importance? If yes, do so and explain your ranking. If you could not rank the roles, explain why. Is it because all roles are equally important?
  4. What role do you tend to play in groups? Is it a role you choose because you enjoy it or because you are just naturally good at it?
  5. We have all had to struggle with some roles we were required to play. Describe such an experience from your personal or professional life. Explain the difficulty and how you solved it.
  6. In a summary paragraph, discuss the value or constraint that you find with group roles. Discuss how knowledge of group roles will help a group communicate and work together.

Write a 4-5 page essay in Word format. Apply APA standards for writing style to your work. Include a References page for any articles and websites used in your research.

A physical count of the remaining inventory reveals that there are 272 units on hand at the end of the period. Now that you know the number of units and cost of goods available for sale during 2012, the next step is to allocate those units to ending inventory or cost of merchandise sold. Recall that beginning inventory and each purchase can be thought of as layers. Each layer must now be allocated to either cost of merchandise sold (an expense) or ending inventory (an asset). Complete the tables below to determine each layer for the cost of merchandise sold and the ending inventory (for ending inventory, start with the last layer and work backwards).

BUYU Manufacturing has been contracted to provide SAEL Electronics with printed circuit and motherboards (PC) boards under the following terms:
  • 100,000 PC boards will be delivered to SAEL in one month.
  • In 3 months, SAEL has an option to take the delivery of an additional 100,000 boards by giving BUYU a 30-day notice.
  • SAEL will pay $5 for each board it takes.
BUYU manufactures the PC boards through a process called
batching, and manufacturing costs are as follows:
  • The manufacturing batch run has a fixed setup cost of $250,000, regardless of the run size.
  • The marginal manufacturing cost is $2.00 per board, regardless of the size of the batch run.

BUYU must decide whether it should manufacture all 200,000 PC boards now, or if it should manufacture 100,000 now and the other 100,000 boards only if SAEL decides to buy them. If BUYU manufactures 200,000 now and SAEL does not exercise its option, then BUYU will lose the manufacturing cost of the extra 100,000 boards. BUYU believes that there is a 50% chance that SAEL will exercise its option to buy the additional 100,000 PC boards.

  1. Discuss the potential profit of manufacturing all 200,000 boards now.
  2. Draw a decision tree for the decision that BUYU faces.
  3. If BUYU uses its expected profit as the basis for its decision, determine the preferred course of action.
  4. Determine the range of values of the probability that SAEL will exercise its option, making the decision found in part c as optimal, and determine the expected value of perfect information about whether SAEL will exercise its option.
  5. Assume now that BUYU is constantly risk averse with a risk tolerance of $100,000, and answer parts 3 and 4 again.

Alliance Supermarket and Point-of-Sale (POS) Systems

Text: Vonderembse, M. A., & White, G. P. (2013). Operations management. San Diego, CA: Bridgepoint Education, Inc.

Alliance Supermarkets

Alliance Supermarkets has been using a point-of-sale (POS) system for some time to track its inventory. The system uses a laser scanner to readthe universal product code (UPC) on each item at the checkout container. The UPC is a number that uniquely identifies the product on which itappears. Currently, Alliance is using the UPC information to update inventory records for each item. Although the system has greatly improvedthe company’s ability to replenish inventory promptly, the company still has some problems. For example, sudden changes in demand for aparticular item can catch the company by surprise as it bases inventory replenishment on historical demand patterns. Further, demand patternsand preferences may vary from one store to another depending on the customers served by each, but the inventory system groups all demandinformation together and treats each store equally. Finally, the manufacturers that make the products stocked by Alliance Supermarkets arealways pressuring Alliance to help them target appropriate customers for special promotions and sales.

The chief information officer (CIO) of Alliance realizes that much more could probably be done with the data collected from its POS system. Forexample, the company could analyze the relationship between each product’s sales and weather patterns. It is even possible to analyze anindividual customer’s buying habits and identify instances when a customer may be persuaded to try a different brand of a certain product.

Suppose you have been asked to study this situation and suggest possible new and innovative uses for the information generated by the POSsystem. Ideally, these ideas should help Alliance better serve its customers by ensuring that adequate quantities of each item are available, thatcosts are kept low, and that customers are made aware of new products that may interest them.

    1. What information may help Alliance reduce costs while providing better service?

  1. If purchase information can be obtained on individual customers, what new approach could be used by Alliance?
  2.
