Strategic National Stock Pile and Government Preparedness

The Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) is a pivotal tool in the event of a disaster. The SNS is used as a federal government initiative to meet the threat of disasters that result in mass casualties.

Using the Internet, research the SNS and respond to the following:

List and explain the types of items a community hospital will require and seek from the SNS in the event of a disaster.

List and explain at least two concerns you may have when forced to rely on this facility.

During the creation of disaster plans, it is common and essential that neighboring hospitals work together. List and explain some of the problems that may arise from a disaster plan which may be ten years old and involved all of the local community hospitals at the time it was originally designed.

The Health Care Scene: Contemporary Trends

As health care leaders, it is important to understand that health care is quite a dynamic field. Its constant changes are a result of continuing trends in regulation, policy, patient and provider advocacy efforts, as well as increasingly sophisticated technology and industry benchmarking guidelines.

For your assignment you review the possible topics for your Senior Project located in Week Five of your online course or in the “Components of Course Evaluation” section of this guide, and select the topic your training program will address. If you choose not to select a topic from the approved topic list, you must have your original topic approved by your instructor prior to submitting this assignment.

For this assignment, focus on a specific contemporary trend in health care and be sure to include all of the following influences:

  • Changes in client characteristics
  • Regulation of the health care industry
  • Reimbursement patterns and mandates
  • Restructuring of health care organizations
  • Impact of technology
  • Ongoing social and ethical factors

Address the information above as it pertains to your selected topic, in an eight to ten slide (excluding title and reference slides) PowerPoint presentation.

Your presentation should conclude with a summary describing the following concerns:

  • Overall, why should health care managers be aware of this change and trend?
  • What impact does this trend have on the stakeholder groups involved (e.g., patients, providers, administrators, third-party payers, legislators, etc.) for a specific organization specified (e.g., for profit, nonprofit, hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, etc.).

The information in this presentation will later be used as part of your Senior Project to set the context for the audience you select for a training program on the contemporary trend identified here.

Your presentation must include detailed speaker’s notes (i.e., at least 150 words) for each slide as well as a minimum of one to two scholarly sources from the Ashford University Library and one to two current, scholarly web sources.

Your presentation, and any citations used, must be in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Examples of scholarly web sources are available in this week’s recommended websites. These sources will also count toward the required sources for your Senior Project. Your presentation must be engaging and relevant to your audience. Lines of text on a slide will not be sufficient for this assignment. It should contain images, graphics, and/or multimedia that communicate your training program clearly to your audience. For tips on creating an excellent presentation, read this overview.

Civil Rights Decisions and Public Opinion- 2-3 paragraph

The Supreme Court is unique in its ability to rule. Appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, Supreme Court justices serve for life. For this reason, justices do not have to appease voters and campaign contributors to keep their positions. Therefore, the Supreme Court can make unbiased rulings based on its interpretations of the Constitution; this differs from elected officials who must answer to voters to get re-elected. The ability for the justices to interpret law with an unbiased lens often puts them ahead of the curve (and public opinion) on cultural and social issues.

For example, in the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, the justices ruled in favor of desegregation. At the time, the idea of racial integration in schools was extremely unpopular. The unpopularity of the Supreme Court’s decision was made evident in the ensuing public outcry as well as the response by government officials. Immediately after the decision, the Arkansas Governor at the time, Orval Faubus, ordered the National Guard of Arkansas to block “Little Rock Nine” students from entering into the previously white-only school. Even after the Supreme Court had made its final decision, Governor Faubus didn’t budge. It took President Eisenhower to send the 101st Airborne Army Division to enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Peruse the chapter entitled “Civil Rights and Equal Protection” in the course text, Landmark Supreme Court Cases: The Most Influential Decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States. Pay particular attention to Supreme Court decisions that did not coincide with public opinion.
  • Select a Supreme Court case related to civil rights, but unrelated to race, in which the decision did not coincide with public opinion. Think about how the policy effected by the decision impacted society.
  • With the case you selected in mind, reflect on the pros and cons of Supreme Court justices being insulated from public opinion.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a brief description of the case you selected. Then explain how the case did or might influence federal, state, and/or local public policies. Be specific and use examples to illustrate your explanation. Finally, with the case you selected in mind, explain at least one pro and one con of Supreme Court justices being insulated from public opinion. Be specific.

Statistics Pitfalls

As a person who understands and uses statistics to solve problems in business you know that you must use the right statistical tool to compare data against theories. If the data doesn’t support the theory under investigation, you either reject or revise your theory. (You don’t revise the data!)

However, you understand that pitfalls may exist in the data collection process and the reasoning process. For instance, you know to watch for:

  1. Making conclusions about a large population from a small sample.
  2. Making conclusions from nonrandom samples
  3. Attaching importance to rare observations
  4. Using poor survey methods

Working with someone in class or in your company…explain/discuss each pitfall and how it might impact good problem solving in the business environment. You may write a short narrative of 75-150 words or you may create an audio/video file to be viewed by members of the class.
