Learning Enviornment Plan

Creating a positive learning environment enhances opportunities for young children to feel safe and supported. Teachers and child care providers learn that careful planning and the effective arrangement of space and classroom equipment can facilitate learning experiences for young children.

Environmental Lab

For each assignment, you will use the M.U.S.E. link to complete the lab.

In this lab, you will see the time progression of impacts associated with either coal-fired or nuclear power plants for electricity generation to help you write up a scientific paper that centers on the following:

  • Given that the current 2 primary sources of electricity generation are coal and nuclear power plants, which of these sources is better for human sustainability?

Analyze Energy Sources Lab

Everything people do in their daily lives involves the consumption of resources—particularly energy. With respect to energy, electricity is one of the most important resources consumed and also one of the highest in demand. Traditionally, fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and oil have dominated the U.S. energy mix; however, as it is well-known, carbon-emitting energy sources are very detrimental to the environment and are contributing to global warming. Fortunately, alternative energy resources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power are becoming more efficient and prevalent in today’s energy economy.

Using the M.U.S.E. link, review the background information and gather your data.

Use the Lab 4 worksheet for assignment instructions and data collection.

Please submit your completed assignment.

For assistance with your assignment, please use your text, Web resources, and all course materials.

Module 4 assignment 2

Assignment 2: Media and Crime Log—Entry II

In this module, you will have an opportunity to add to your media and crime log by applying theories presented in this course to media portrayals of crime. The American public is fascinated with crime and therefore, there is no shortage of media depictions of crimes and criminals. In this assignment, you will use the scholarly knowledge you have gained in the course to analyze how the media portrays crime.

You are now familiar with biological, psychological, and sociological theories of crime. In M2: Assignment 2, you wrote a log entry applying psychological theories of criminal behavior to analyze articles or news stories. In this assignment, you will write your second log entry.

Research newspaper or magazine articles related to crime using the print or online news media.

Select two articles or news stories and apply at least two theories from the biological, psychological, and/or sociological perspectives to each article or news story.

  • What is the purpose of the story as you perceive it?
  • How is crime or criminal justice portrayed?
  • What feelings or reactions are evoked in you by the article?
  • How would you explain the reported criminal behavior using the two theories you selected? Explain your choice of theory.

Give complete citation for the selected article and include a digital copy if possible.

Culture Background

Your Pie Chart

Purpose

The purpose of this exercise is three-tiered: to compare your own cultural background (African American mother, Canadian father with Christian values) with that of others; to raise awareness of the importance of self-identity based on affiliations with groups; and to consider the influence of self-identity on individuals’ experiences in organizational settings.

Introduction

Personal characteristics (some changeable, others not), which may influence an individual’s basic self-image and sense of identity, may also influence experiences in the workplace.  Primary dimensions of diversity are essentially unchangeable personal characteristics (e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, and physical and mental abilities).

Secondary dimensions of diversity, however, are changeable personal characteristics that are acquired and may be modified or abandoned throughout life (e.g., education, income, marital and parental status, religion, political affiliation, and work experience). Of course, secondary characteristics are not completely self-determined; educational background, work experience, income, and marital status are affected by others’ decisions.  However, people generally have more control over secondary dimensions of diversity than over primary dimensions.

Instructions

Create a pie chart identifying group affiliations that have some importance in your self-concept.  These affiliations may be based on any of the primary and secondary dimensions of diversity mentioned or on some other personal characteristic that is particularly important to you. Indicate the approximate importance of each group by the size of the slice of pie that you assign it.

** Write a summary of your answers to the following questions concerning your pie chart:

1.       1. What did you learn about yourself?

2.      2. What surprised you the most?

3.       3. How does your self-identity influence your experiences in organizational settings?

Web Field Trip: Web Field Trip: Levels of Moral Development

Carol Gilligan, a professor at Harvard University and a former research assistant for Lawrence Kohlberg, has challenged Kohlberg’s research and findings on the levels of moral development because he failed to include women in his studies. Gilligan argues that Kohlberg’s levels of moral development may in fact be accurate for males in this society, but that they may not be accurate for females based on differences in the socialization process for boys and girls.

Perform your own research on Lawrence Kohlberg and Carol Gilligan. Be sure to visit at least two different websites for each and to record the URLs of each site you visit.

Compare Kohlberg’s and Gilligan’s Levels of Moral Development. Your comparison should include at least two concepts that are the same and two concepts that are different.

Business Process and Functional Modeling

Assignment 1: Business Process and Functional Modeling

Due Week 4 and worth 90 points

Advanced Business Systems (ABS) is a consulting and staffing company providing specialized staffing and consulting services to clients in a variety of different industries. It has offices in major U.S. metro areas and has ongoing relationships with Fortune 500 companies. Its areas of services range from software development and network engineering to geo-information systems. It has 50 plus regional offices in U.S. and five (5) offices in Canada. It plans to expand to other countries in the future.

When an ABS client company determines that it will need a contractor or temporary professional, it issues a staffing request against the contract it had previously negotiated with ABS. The contract manager in ABS reviews the staff request and ensures that the request is valid with its current contract with its client from the database.

  • If the request is not valid, the contract manager sends the staffing request back to the client and explains the reasons and asks for the need for starting a new contract.
  • If the request is valid, the contract manager will start recruiting requests by putting the request into its staffing database. The staffing request is then sent to ABS placement department.

In the placement department, the placement specialists will check the job requirements and candidate’s qualifications.

  • If there is a qualified candidate, the specialist will notify the candidate and put a note in the database.
  • If a qualified candidate cannot be found or not immediately available, the specialist notifies contract managers and the recruiting department; the recruiting department starts searching outside immediately.

The recruiting department normally has 30 days to find an outside candidate and send the qualified candidates to the placement department to review. If an internal qualified candidate is confirmed with  his / her availability, the confirmation will be sent to the arrangement department. In the arrangement department, the candidate works with the specialists to further confirm the placement details, such as starting date, location, compensation (e.g., per diem), and travel arrangement. The final confirmation will be sent to the client along with a billing schedule. If the client agrees with the arrangement, he/she acknowledges the arrangement with contract managers in the contract department. The contract manager then puts a memo into its database and closes the request.
