Assignment 2: Discussion—Cognitive Development in Animals

Washoe is one of the most famous chimpanzees because of her ability to use sign language to communicate. She was able to communicate approximately 350 words and was even observed teaching her son sign language. Even more impressive was that Washoe was able to combine these words into hundreds of logical combinations with different meanings that were not taught, but rather created by herself. You can learn more about human cognitive development by considering Washoe’s use of sign language, as well as the information gained from the study of other animals such as chimps, rats, etc.

Respond to the following:

  • Specifically, what can we learn about human cognitive development through the study of these animals?
  • Thinking back to the discussion in M1: Assignment 2, are there any ethical issues that arise from using animals to study human development? Consider what you have learned about the inherent differences between animals and humans.
  • Why do researchers make use of animals instead of humans for their experiments on development?

Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

By Sunday, January 17, 2016, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, January 20, 2016, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses. In your responses, consider the following:

  • Are there any strengths or limitations noted by your peers that you did not include in your own response? If so, what are they?
  • Are there any other examples of reasoning abilities that you can add to your peers’ responses? If so, what are they?
  • Are there other examples of reasoning abilities that are found to exist only in a small number of species? If yes, indicate what they are.

Assume that we are estimating 2 different basketball players’ free throw shooting accuracy. he first basketball player is on a collegite team and plays the sport almost daily year round. After watching that player shoot, we estimate that she will make 85% of her free throws. The second player, a doofus college professor with litter athletic ability, is similarly observed and his free throw average is estimated at 15%. How many free throws must the first player make in a row before you can confidently reject the following null hypothesis:

Ha: The player’s free throw percentage was incorrectly estimated

Ho: The player’s free throw percentage was not incorrectly estimated

How many free throws must the second player make in a row in order to confidentlly reject the same null hypothesis? Use the 95% level of confidence for both players.

Please respond to the following discussion topic. Your initial post should be a minimum of 150 words in length. Then, make at least two thoughtful responses to your fellow students’ posts.

Assume ABC Company has chosen to invest in new manufacturing equipment. The initial cost of the equipment is $1,200,000. The equipment has a useful life of 20 years. The company uses straight-line depreciation. Their tax rate is 30%. Their weighted average cost of capital is 10%. The new equipment is expected to increase net cash flows by $500,000 in year 1, $350,000 in years 2 through 4, and $100,000 in years 5 through 10. Using all four investment assessment methods (IRR, ARR, NPV, or payback), perform the calculations for this project. Based on just ONE of your calculations should the project be accepted or rejected? Critique the results of the other three calculations you completed. Do they all support your accept/reject decision? Which assessment method is the best?
