FOR THE TUTOR ONLY

The Big Interview

The Final Project requires you to integrate the work you undertook throughout the course into a multimedia presentation. You can use any presentation tool(s) with which you are comfortable. For instance, you can use PowerPoint or Prezi for the presentation and then create a screencast of your presentation using Jing or Screenr. Another option could be to use video to present and upload to YouTube (and share the link with the instructor). There are many creative options for presenting the information, so be sure to contact your instructor if you need further ideas or support with using multimedia for the presentation.

Scenario: The school you researched during this course is being taken over the by the state for poor performance. Based on your education philosophy, your classroom management plan and lesson plan, and the learning activities and assessment you developed in this course, the new principal has asked you to interview for the lead teacher position. This position would allow you to teach the grade of your choosing and give you the authority to enact significant changes across the school. On top of it all, the position pays $150,000. You are one of only 20 candidates asked to apply for this prestigious position. You have been asked to submit your e-portfolio and a multimedia presentation instead of interviewing in person. At a minimum, the principal has requested that you include the following as part of your presentation:

Part One: Presentation
Create a presentation that includes the following professional artifacts to demonstrate your knowledge and skills in education to get the job. You may use any presentation tool you are comfortable with, such as PowerPoint, Prezi, Blogger, GoogleSites, Wix, or Weebly. Remember that for an interview, you want to use your best work. So, it is important to revise any assignments based on instructor feedback.

  1. Education philosophy
  2. Classroom management plan
  3. Different school models
  4. Effective lesson planning and design
  5. Assessment matters

Part Two:The Big Interview
Address each of the points that are required in your interview below. You may include anything else in the presentation that you think is necessary and pertinent for the interview committee to know. You may use any technology tool shared during this course or any tool of your choosing to capture or record your interview. Your interview should be no longer than five minutes in length.

  1. Describe your philosophy of education.
  2. Briefly share your idea of a successful classroom management plan.
  3. Explain which model of teaching you believe the school should implement and why you are making this recommendation.
  4. Identify the role you believe students play in the learning process.
  5. Share your thoughts on what building an inclusive professional learning community means.
  6. Describe what one could expect to see if he or she entered your classroom during the school day.

Be sure to attach your presentation or include links to your presentation (Part One) and your interview (Part Two) in a Microsoft Word document for submission.

ESSAY EXAM

A Case Study in Regulation

Background

On January 17, 2006, FDA issued a direct final rule/proposed rule to exempt investigational drugs and biologics for phase 1 human clinical trials from the CGMP regulation. As you know, it is a requirement that all clinical and commercial drugs and biologics, such as vaccines, be made per cGMP regulation. At the same time, FDA issued a draft guidance providing recommendations on manufacturing Phase 1 material (to replace the formal, legal cGMP regulation). FDA was proposing regulating Phase 1 material by means other than cGMP regulation, to rely on the broad applicability of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (which states that drugs not made per cGMPs are adulterated, but does not provide specifics) and the information submitted by sponsors in Investigational New Drug (IND) Applications. FDA stated that they were taking the action “to streamline and promote the drug development process.”

Preparation

Read the following documents to prepare yourself for an essay response on this proposed rule:

  • Guidance for Industry: INDs – Approaches to Complying to cGMP during Phase I (read sections I through V)
  • Power of Storytelling article by Barbara Immel
  • Barbara Immel comments on Direct Final/Proposed Rule
  • Optional: Chipping Away the GMPs (Powerpoint slides as a pdf) by Barbara Immela

documents up loaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/?06xqic8t0qxv3uu

Essay

The events and comments surrounding this move by FDA to eliminate formal cGMP adherence for Phase I studies lead the Agency to withdraw the rule on May 2, 2006 due to the significant adverse comments they received by individuals and groups, such as the Immel Group. This result is important because it is a timely reminder of the complexity involved in changing regulation and also the impact that the public can have on shaping how the FDA regulates this industry.

Write a three-page essay (12-pt font, double-spaced) based on your experience in this course and the preparatory readings above addressing the following prompt:

Reflect on the how history has shaped the GMPs and the purpose of Phase I clinical trials. Identify the most compelling points in ensuring that GMPs remain in effect for Phase I trials or, alternatively, outline how Phase I trials could be expedited by limiting applicability of GMPs.

Grading

Grading rubric is in zip file

Post-script

Note that in fall 2008, the FDA did ultimately approve this rule for GMPs in Phase I clinicals. They did make some amendments but it is not too different from what you’ll read for this assignment. You do NOT need to address the fact that this is now approved in your essay.

Biology 113 Online
Lab Assignment
Unit 1

Please note: There are two parts to this lab (the Observation part and the Scientific Method part) – be sure to submit both parts!

  1. A good biologist is a good observer. Find an outdoor spot in which you are comfortable and make a detailed observation of everything you see. Spare no details! I am looking for a least one page, single-spaced.

  2. Use the Scientific Method to solve an everyday problem (real or imagined).

    The Scientific Method

A systematic means of solving a problem

    1. Definethe problem
    2. Collectinformation from as many sources as possible
    3. Form a hypothesis (an educated guess about the solution to the problem)
    4. Experiment to test the hypothesis using a control (business as usual)and an experimental factor (something is altered). There is a nice discussion of this on pages 12 and 13)
    5. Observe and record data from the experiment
    6. Draw conclusions (about the hypothesis)
    7. Publicize (one of the reasons there is an explosion in scientific publications)

Hypotheses that are supported by many different lines of evidence from repeated experiments may be regarded as a theory and may eventually be considered a scientific fact.

Now, let’s use an example to illustrate the Scientific Method. Things that have the word “science” or “scientific” attached to them are often times thought of as being for a bunch of egg-heads that are hanging around in their ivory tower labs. Not true! We are all scientists! Albert Einstein said, “The whole of science is nothing more than the refinement of everyday thinking.” So even though we call this procedure for solving problems the “scientific method”, we all use it in one form or another when we solve problems! Let me illustrate:

    1. My car won’t start and I need to go somewhere!
    2. I consult my owner’s manual, I call my mechanic, I go online and find a website about car problems, I call an 800 number and talk to a factory representative, I talk to my brother-in-law (who thinks he knows everything about everything)
    3. From the information I have gathered, I believe my problem is my car battery – my hypothesis is that my car battery is deader than a doornail and I need to fix it.
    4. I need to test my hypothesis so I try to turn to key in the ignition one more time. Nothing. Then, I try to turn on my headlights. Nothing. I turn on my radio, I try to honk the horn. Still nothing.
    5. My observation: nothing that I have tried that is part of the electrical system works.
    6. My conclusion: my hypothesis is correct – my battery IS deader than a doornail! Now I can do something about it. I might try to get a jump off of another car or I might need a new battery.
    7. A few weeks later, a friend comes up to me and tells me his car won’t start. I tell him about my episode and suggest that he check the battery. I have become one of his sources (step 2). Now, if this was a scientific problem that I was working on, let’s say I was measuring the growth of corn under different conditions; I might publicize my findings by publishing a paper in a scientific journal.
