Project description
ADVANCED INFORMATION MANAGEMENT & THE APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGY ??Competency 744.2.2: Leadership in Information Technology – The graduate integrates knowledge of nursing initiatives, professional organizations, and leadership into strategies for enhancing nursing informatics.?Competency 744.2.5: Information Security – The graduate evaluates the privacy and security of data within healthcare organizations.?Competency 744.2.6: Technology Supporting Quality Improvement – The graduate analyzes the effectiveness and appropriateness of technology designed to ensure quality patient outcomes.

Introduction:??Current and emerging technologies in healthcare provide nurses with the opportunity to improve patient outcomes through ever-increasing access to data and evidence. Decisions made at the point of care and the organizational level are impacted by information support systems. Nurses prepared at the master’s level fill a key role in leading unit and organizational change that incorporates these emerging technologies into the improvement of patient safety and quality of care.??This project consists of evaluating two key roles commonly expected of the master’s-prepared nurse: (1) shaping and guiding a group process as the identified leader of a project team and (2) evaluating the project team’s products and synthesizing that work into a presentation to facility leadership for determination of the proper course of action.??The project outcome will be a presentation, designed to be delivered to the executive leadership team of the healthcare system.

…….

Scenario:
You work as a case manager for a rural healthcare system. You have been asked by the patient safety manager to lead a project team designed to follow up on a root cause analysis (RCA) that investigated how the FDA warning issued on a commonly used medication was not passed through the channels at the medical center. This project team will be in charge of using the capabilities of the healthcare system’s electronic medical record to devise a system to identify the patients in the health system who are both prescribed the medication and have the associated risk factors present as part of the warning. The system must be able to track the subsequent notification of these patients and must also document the remedy to the safety alert.??Note: When selecting your commonly used medication, you may choose a recently recalled drug from the FDA’s “Recalls, Market Withdrawals, and Safety Alerts” or another recalled drug relevant to your current practice setting.??Your team is expected to create a plan for dissemination of this information to the rural population served by your healthcare system. The patient safety manager also wants the healthcare system to have an easier, faster way to notify patients when these warnings are released.
Project Requirements:
Note: Any information that would be considered confidential, proprietary, or personal in nature should not be included. Do not include the actual names of people, stakeholders, or other personally identifiable information. Fictional names should be used. Also, agency-specific data, including any financial information, should not be included but should be addressed in a general fashion as appropriate.
Create a multimedia presentation (e.g., PowerPoint, Keynote) (suggested length of 20–25 slides) in which you do the following:
Note: Include presenter notes for slides as appropriate in order to fully cover the level of explanation, analysis, and discussion necessary.
A. Identify a patient safety warning of a recently recalled drug or another recalled drug relevant to your current practice setting.
1. Discuss the background and circumstances of the patient safety warning.

B. Identify four potential interdisciplinary team members in the healthcare system that would be included in your project team.
1. Explain each team member’s role in the project, including why this team member’s expertise is necessary for the success of this project.
2. Discuss whether the team members would serve in a primary team function (with assigned areas of responsibility) or in a consultative role (providing advice and guidance as subject-matter experts).

C. Create a proposal that analyzes two approaches that use information technology to gather and track the required information for your chosen patient safety warning.
1. Discuss two advantages of each approach.
2. Discuss two disadvantages of each approach.

…….

Note: Include factors addressing human and capital resources.

3. Discuss how patient confidentiality would be maintained for each approach.
4. Recommend one of these approaches to the executive leadership team at your facility.
a. Justify your recommended approach.

D. Develop a plan for disseminating an educational item (e.g., handout, brochure, poster, website template) to the patient population served by the healthcare system.
1. Discuss the effectiveness of your plan.

E. Recommend an electronic notification system that would ensure patients receive key patient safety warnings in a timely manner.
1. Explain why you chose your recommended electronic notification system.
2. Discuss how patient confidentiality would be maintained.

Scenario: Mr. Jones is a corporate traveler on an expense account. Upon arrival after a long trip from Tokyo, Japan, he gets out of the airport shuttle. While walking towards the entrance to the hotel Mr. Jones trips over a pile of fresh cut branches near the front door that the grounds maintenance crew just trimmed. After picking himself up from the outside fall, jet lagged, and disgruntled, he walks into the front lobby and does not see the wet floor – he slips and lands hard on his back. The front desk clerk, Sarah, rushes over and says, “Are you alright?” Mr. Jones says: “I appreciate that everyone is busy doing their jobs, but I’ve already fallen twice and I haven’t even checked in yet.” The front desk agent realizes the seriousness of this incident, and upgrades the guest to a suite. Just as Mr. Jones is going to his room, the front desk agent sees the bellman fall on the same wet floor. She goes over to him and asks if he is okay. Bellman: “I’m fine” and he limps away. The front agent then calls the General Manager (GM) to report the incidents. Once in his suite, Mr. Jones enters his room, hungry and tired from his long journey. He discovers that the mini bar has not been restocked. He attempts to soak in the tub because he is hurting all over, but there is no soap or towels in the room. He calls down to the front desk and asks for the items to be delivered and orders room service. Mr. Jones then waits in his room for housekeeping and for room service personnel to deliver the requested items. Meanwhile the GM is on the 22nd floor when he receives the call from the front desk agent. As he takes the elevator to the lobby to meet with the front desk agent, he begins to think about the incidents briefly described to him over the phone. He suddenly realizes that this is the 3rd accident concerning one of his employees in the last month, not to mention the two accidents that have occurred to the same guest in one day.

Questions:

 Discuss what went wrong in this scenario.

 What should have been done to comply with OSHA regulations?

 How should the GM address all aspects of the situation?

Address: a) The employee incident;

b) The guest incidents and the way it was handled, and

c) The customer service and training issues.

Consider each of the following independent and material situations. In each case:

    • the balance date is 31 October 2020.
    • the fieldwork was completed on 5 December 2020.
    • the financial report and audit report were signed on 12 December 2020.
    • the financial report and audit report were mailed to the members on 20 December 2020.
    1. Your client, Outback Mining, owns a mineral exploration licence in Central Australia. At 31 October this licence was valued by an independent expert at $50,000,000. This valuation is reflected in the financial report. On 8 December Outback Mining received notice that a claim was being lodged under the Native Titles Act for land which included that subject to the exploration licence. If the claim is successful the exploration licence will be worthless.
    2. Your client, Bird Pty Limited, derives approximately 10% of revenues from selling aviary supplies to city-based bird breeders.

A draft copy of a government report, leaked to the press and reported in the media on 11 November, recommends that strict limits be placed on the number of birds that are allowed to be kept in suburban areas. Bird Pty Limited estimates that if the recommendations are enacted, about 70% of its customers will have to cut their flocks by 50% or more. This would affect not only future sales but also their ability to pay existing debts. No further information, other than the draft report, is available as at 12 December.

    1. Your client, Gem Pty Limited, made an out of court settlement on 1 December 2020 of $300,000. The settlement related to a litigation case dating back 4 years. A provision of $150,000 was recorded in the 31 October 2020 financial report.
    2. On 14 December 2020, you discover that a debtor of your client, Galaxy Ltd, was placed in provisional liquidation on 8 December. The debtor owed $600,000 as at 31 October; a specific provision of $300,000 of this amount was made at this date. On very preliminary information, the likely payout to unsecured creditors is zero.
    3. A flood occurred in the warehouse of your client SuperSpring Ltd on 2 November 2020. Inventory valued at $2m was destroyed. The directors believe only half of this value will be recovered from the insurers.
