Implement for the query language a new special form called unique.

Implement for the query language a new special form called unique. Uniqueshould succeed if there is precisely one item in the data base satisfying a specified query. For example,

(unique (job ?x (computer wizard)))

should print the one-item stream

(unique (job (Bitdiddle Ben) (computer wizard)))

since Ben is the only computer wizard, and

(unique (job ?x (computer programmer)))

should print the empty stream, since there is more than one computer programmer. Moreover,

(and (job ?x ?j) (unique (job ?anyone ?j)))

should list all the jobs that are filled by only one person, and the people who fill them.

There are two parts to implementing unique. The first is to write a procedure that handles thisspecial form, and the second is to make qeval dispatch to that procedure. The second part is trivial, since qeval does its dispatching in a data-directed way. If your procedure is calleduniquely-asserted, all you need to do is

(put ’unique ’qeval uniquely-asserted)

and qeval will dispatch to this procedure for every query whose type (car) is the symbol unique.

The real problem is to write the procedure uniquely-asserted. This should take as input the contents (cdr) of the unique query, together with a stream of frames. For each frame in the stream, it should use qeval to find the stream of all extensions to the frame that satisfy the given query. Any stream that does not have exactly one item in it should be eliminated. The remaining streams should be passed back to be accumulated into one big stream that is the result of the unique query. This is similar to the implementation of the not special form.

Test your implementation by forming a query that lists all people who supervise precisely one person.

Economic Impact of Casino Gaming……………. 1 answer below »

As the number of casinos in the United States grows, casino owners, more than ever, find themselves competing for attention.9 Owners in traditional markets like Las Vegas and Atlantic City are spending money in an effort to give people a reason to visit their establishments. Caesars World, the largest publicly traded U.S. gambling entity, could be considered a forerunner in this area. According to a 1988 article in Forbes magazine: Caesars has long been the most lavish property on the Las Vegas Strip, dripping with ostentation. Many of the rooms have mirrored ceilings and bathtubs big enough for a small orgy. Out front are fountains and huge “Roman” statuary. Inside are eight restaurants, a Disneyesque floating cocktail lounge called Cleopatra’s Barge and pendulous crystal chandeliers. Out back is the Garden of the Gods, a sprawling swimming pool inlaid with Italian marble and surrounded by cypress trees. In almost every passageway are slot machines, the addicts pumping away at them all day and night.10 With casinos everywhere trying to follow Caesars’ example, it is not surprising that the investment to profit ratio for major American casino companies in 1995 was 3 to 1.11 In addition to the new and expanded physical casinos, the Internet now provides an additional medium for gambling. Some experts estimate that this form of gambling could produce $8 billion in revenues by the turn of the century. To help gauge the potential for this market, casino revenues in 1997 were $23 billion.12 However, it should be noted that this market does not grow without its own controversies. Many Internet gambling sites are being set-up overseas in countries that lack strong gaming regulations, and US officials fear that their efforts to regulate this new market could be easily circumvented. With competition being significantly increased, one could argue that the real high rollers in the gaming industry of the late 1990s are the casino owners.13 Back in 1982, the Greate Bay Casino Corporation, owner of the Sands Hotel and Casino, reported a net income of over $14 million. Through three quarters in 1997, the casino’s owner reported a loss of $7.75 million (refer to Exhibits 2-4 for additional data). The Sands Casino and Hotel is not the only gambling venue that is suffering from financial woes. As early as 1991, seven of the twelve casinos in Atlantic City showed operating losses even though hotels continue to be booked on most weekends.14 As a result, Atlantic City casino owners are frantically seeking new ways to create revenues.

Discuss the following statement with reference to a project, assignment or other initiative you have been involved with: “While project management is an activity undertaken with others, the projects themselves involve these other people doing—or not doing—just what is needed. This happens in an environment where the project manager has far less authority than responsibility, and it is this limitation of authority that characterises the project manager’s role and propels the most successful project managers to demonstrate leadership.” Portfolio Entry 3 With reference to the work you have done for Portfolio Entry 1 and 2, devise and run a technique that you can use to address the following questions: • •? Which leadership style suits you best? • •? How does this fit with your favoured team roles? • •? How will you bolster the parts (roles) that you’re not so good at? • •? How will you manage to delegate those parts that you love doing? • •? How will you ensure that the parts you favour least, still get the attention they need for good project leadership?
