DAT500N Fall 2019

December 2019

General Instructions:

1. Due date: 6:00pm, Thursday, December 12th, 2019.

2. Between Excel and Python. You have the option to build and solve your optimization model in either python or in Excel spreadsheet. However, you should use Excel

for at most three problems of your choice, and use python for other problems. If Excel

is used for more than three problems, then 30% of the points of the problem will be

deducted.

3. Deliverable:

• A summary file:

(a) For each problem, provide a clear definition of your decision variables, a description of your objective function, and constraints. Mathematical formulation is strongly recommended. Formulation in words is OK, too.

(b) For each problem, clearly present the optimal solutions and optimal objective

function value.

• Excel files or ipynb files separately for each problem. Please name them

using problem number, e.g., P1 ,P2, P3, P4, P5.

4. All files should be submitted on Canvas. Clear presentation of your logic and

your results is important. Points will be given to the clarity of the model presentation.

5. Academic Integrity: This exam must be an individual effort: your solutions must

reflect only your individual work. Submitting your solutions to this exam implies

that you adhere to Olin’s Academic Code of Conduct and Olin’s Code of Professional

Conduct.

Discussion Topic 10: What did you learn?

You’re at job interview and your interviewer, who will do the hiring, says to you, “So, I see here that you took Macroeconomics in college. Tell me, what did you learn, and how will that help you add value for this company?” Please give him or her a carefully reasoned, analytic and articulate answer.

You may wish to give a general survey of the entire class, starting with the basics of capitalism and finishing with macroeconomic models and policies. You may want to focus on just two or three of the concepts we’ve covered, but if you do that, please explain why you thought they were so important or profound, or why it would provide you with the relevant information to do this job well. You have a lot of latitude on this one – please be creative, articulate and profound.

Before you actually post your submission, you should write a couple of drafts to make sure the syntax and grammar are correct.

    ………………Answer Preview…………….

Yes, I did macroeconomics in college and I learned a great deal out of it. To begin with, Macroeconomics is concerned with the general operation or wellbeing of a country or region. It thus focuses on the Gross domestic Product (GDP) which is the aggregate final output of residents and businesses in an economy in one………….

Answer the following number theoretic questions: i. The objective of this question is to find the secret age of a Chinese captain. The only information we know is that one year ago, his age was a multiple of 3, in 2 years it will be a multiple of 5, and in 4 years it will be a multiple of 7. Can you find the age of the captain? ii. A student has been asked to solve the following problem: Compute the seventh root of 23 in Z * 77 by using the Extended Euclidean Algorithm and the Square and multiply algorithm. Help him to get the solution by approaching the problem as follows: A. Compute d, the inverse of 7 modulus f(77), where f(.) indicates the Euler’s Totient function. Use the extended Euclidean algorithm for this. B. Compute 23d modulus 77 using the square and multiply algorithm. iii. Let n = p1 × p2 × . . . × pk, where p1, . . . , pk are distinct odd primes and an integer k = 2. The element a ? Z * n is said to be a quadratic residue (QR) modulo n if there exists an x ? Z * n , such that x 2 = a(mod n). If no such x exists, then a is called a quadratic non-residue (QNR) modulo n. A. Find the QR and QNR’s of Z * 35. How many square roots does each of these QR’s have? B. Prove that an element a ? Z * n is a QR modulo n if and only if each component, (a mod p1, . . . , a mod pk) is a QR of Z * pi , where 1 = i = k. C. Show that the product of a QR of Z * n and QNR of Z * n is always a QNR of Z * n . iv. The RSA public key cryptosystem is defined as follows: Let p and q be two prime numbers, let n = pq and f = (p-1)(q -1). Select a random integer e with 1 < e < f such that gcd(e, f) = 1. Compute d such that 1 < d < f and ed = 1(mod f). The public key is (n, e) and the corresponding private key is (n, d). The encryption of a message m is defined as c = me mod n and the decryption is defined as m = c d mod n. Answer the following question regarding RSA: A. Prove that decryption works. B. Suppose that Alice and Bob use RSA public keys with the same modulus n, but with different public exponents e1 and e2. Prove that Alice can decrypt the messages sent to Bob. C. Prove that Eve can decrypt a message sent to Bob and Alice if gcd(e1, e2) = 1. You may use Extended Euclidean Algorithm.
