Concept Assignment

Cathy and John from last week need more assistance.  As a reminder, here are their assets:

–          John 401K – $60,000

–          Cathy Trading account – $100,000

–          John Roth IRA – $15,000

–          John IRA – $195,000

–          CD – $25,000

–          Cathy 401k at old job – $17,000

–          Checking and Savings total $6,000

Cathy and John have about $700 every month left over after paying for expenses.   Their joint annual income is $112,000.  They are both 48 years old.  Monthly living expenses during retirement are $7,000.  Assume inflation is 4% and the nominal rate of return is 8%.  His social security kicks in at age 66 and he will draw $2,600 per month.  She will begin at age 66 too and will draw based on his benefit.    

You will need to input the information in the attached spreadsheet.  You will also have to add all formulas including using the “goal seek” function.  Do NOT turn in a report that looks like Worksheet 14.1 shown on page 477.  If you do this to answer the questions, you will receive no credit.  There is not an example in the book so follow the instructions carefully.  Make sure you send me both a spreadsheet and a word document with your answers.

1.       Cathy and John would like to retire when they are 65.  Using their retirement assets ONLY, what is the annual savings required to fully fund retirement if the last dollar is spent at their age 90?

2.       John is sort of dreaming of leaving the work force early.  What amount of annual savings is required to fully fund retirement at age 62 for both if the last dollar is spent at age 90?

3.       Based on the information you have been given:

a.       Can they retire at age 62?

      • Design an advertising brochure/ booklet that could be used to promote a high quality childhood education and care service. The aim of the brochure/ booklet is to increase enrolments. The brochure should be detailed and visually attractive. The brochure/ booklet should be written in plain English so that all parents/ families will understand it.

        The brochure/ booklet must include information about:

        • how shared thinking and collaborative learning are encouraged and why they are important
        • how the service ensures that different types of families and cultures are included
        • how children are taught about the natural environment
        • how children and families are consulted about important decisions that might affect them
        • how children and families are consulted about curriculum design
        • the service’s philosophy
        • the type of information collected about children and what it is used for
        • how different areas of development are addressed
        • what holistic learning is, why it is important and the way the service ensures that it occurs
        • how children’s learning/ progress is monitored
        • how the interests and learning styles of children are catered to
        • the way the physical environment is arranged
        • how educators interact with children when playing
        • what co-constructing meaning is and how educators and children do this
        • what learning dispositions are and how they are encouraged
        • how educators ensure that children have a voice
        • how educators reflect on their teaching methods
        • how feedback is collected from children and how this is used to ensure continuous improvement
        • how the service adheres to the EYLF

        • Arrange with your supervisor to observe you demonstrating the following workplace observation tasks. Upload the completed checklist and any other written requirements for each task.

          Perform the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during a period of at least 240 hours of work in at least one regulated education and care service

          This assessment task is a combination of written and practical task which are interrelated. You are required to develop, implement and evaluate a plan for a group learning activity.

          Part 1 – develop your plan including an evaluation checklist for the learning environment

          Consult with a group of children and/or families to ascertain current learning needs, goals and developmental stages.

          Read day records/ journals to ascertain current learning needs, goals and developmental stages to plan an activity.

          Write a plan for an activity, include:

          • where the activity will take place (eg indoor or outdoor)
          • what materials are needed
          • expected time frame
          • expected outcome
          • number of children involved
          • number of educators/ staff involved

          Create a checklist to evaluate the planned learning environment, check that it is an appropriate learning area and the resources and materials are useful for the activity.

          Create an evaluation tool for your planned activity – include at least two evaluation methods such as:

          • a checklist
          • anecdotal reports
          • rating scales (according to the National Quality Standards)
          • finished products and correct solutions
          • audio/ videotaping
          • observations
          • questioning children

          Part 2 – implement the planned activity

          Set up the physical environment ready for the planned activity.

          Gather a group of children to take part in the planned activity.

          Ask the children who took part in the activity to give you some verbal feedback at the end of the planned activity.

          Ask the educators who took part in and/or observed the activity to give you feedback at the end of the planned activity using your created evaluation tool.
