Psychology shares with every science the primary goals of describing, explaining, predicting, and controlling the objects of study. The goals of psychology differ from those of other sciences because the search for elements of mental processes and behavior is complicated by constantly shifting human factors.

Identify the theme of this excerpt from the Quit India speeches of 1942 by Mahatma Gandhi, and explain the author’s use of diction to support the theme

“I want the blessings of the whole world so that I may succeed with them I do not want the United Powers to go beyond their obvious limitations I do not want them to accept non-violence and disarm today There is a fundamental difference between fascism and this imperialism which I am fighting Do the British get from India which they hold in bondage Think what difference it would make if India was to participate as a free ally That freedom, if it is to come, must come today It will have no taste left in it today you who have the power to help cannot exercise it If you can exercise it, under the glow of freedom what seems impossible, today, will become possible tomorrow“

CASE Study

Jack Arnold is a resident of Lubbock, Texas, where he is a prosperous rancher and businessman. He has also built up a sizeable portfolio of common stock, which, he believes, is due to the fact that he thoroughly evaluates each stock he invests in. As Jack says, “You can’t be too careful about these things! Anytime I plan to invest in a stock can be bet I’m going to learn as much as I can about the company.’’ Jack prefers to compute his own ratios even though he could easily obtain analytical reports from his broker at no cost. (In fact, Bob Smith, his broker, has been volunteering such services for years). Recently Jack has been keeping an eye on a small chemical stock. The firm, South Plains Chemical Company, is big in the fertilizer business- which is something Jack knows a lot about. Not long ago, he received a copy of the firm’ latest financial statements (summarized here) and decided to take a closer look at the company.

I. [ 10 Points] A plant can manufacture 50 golf clubs per day at a total daily cost of $5159and 60 golf clubs per day for a total cost of $5859. Please show all work and calculations. (a) Assuming that daily cost and production are linearly related, find the total daily cost, C, of producing x golf clubs. (b) Graph the total daily cost for 0 5 x 5 200. (c) Interpret the slope and y intercept of the cost equation. 2. [15 Points] A farmer buys a new tractor for S 155.000 and assumes that it will have a trade-in value of $83,000 after 10 years. The farmer uses a constant rate of depreciation to determine the annual value of the tractor. Please show all work and calculations. (a) Find a linear model for the depreciated value V of the tractor t years after it was purchased. (b) What is the depreciated value of the tractor after 6 years? (c) When will the depreciated value fall below $60,000? (d) Graph V for 0 x 5 20. 3. [10 Points] Find the equilibrium point for the pair of demand and supply functions. Here q represents the number of units produced, in thousands, and x is the price, in dollars. Demand: q = 12.000 – 60x Supply: q = 200 + 60x Please show all work and calculations.

4. [20 Points] We found that the marketing research department for the company that manufactures and sells memory chips for microcomputers established the following price-demand functions p(x) = 90 — 3x 1Sx518 where p(x) is the wholesale price in dollars at which x million chips can be sold.

(a) Find and plot the revenue function. R(x).

Please show all work and calculations.

(b) Find the output that will produce the maximum revenue. (c) What is the wholesale price per chip that produces the maximum revenue? 5. [15 Points] The table shows the increase in average monthly price for cable television in the United States since the year 2012.. Pleat* show all work and caicuiations. (a) Using Excel, find a linear regression model for the average monthly price, where x is the number of years since 2012. Please show all work and screen shot excel (b) Interpret the slope of the model. (c) Use the model to predict the average monthly price in 2023.

Sonimad Sawmill, Inc., purchases logs from independent timber contractors and processes them into the following three types of lumber products. 1. Studs for residential construction (e.g., walls and ceilings) 2. Decorative pieces (e.g., fireplace mantels and beams for cathedral ceilings) 3. Posts used as support braces (e.g., mine support braces and braces for exterior fences around ranch properties) These products are the result of a joint sawmill process that involves removing bark from the logs, cutting the logs into a workable size (ranging from 8 to 16 feet in length), and then cutting the individual products from the logs, depending upon the type of wood (pine, oak, walnut, or maple) and the size (diameter) of the log. The joint process results in the following costs and output of products during a typical month: Joint production costs Materials (rough timber logs) ……… $ 500,000 Debarking (labor and overhead) …….. 50,000 Sizing (labor and overhead) ……… 200,000 Product cutting (labor and overhead) ……. 250,000 Total joint costs ………….. $1,000,000 Product yield and average sales value on a per-unit basis from the joint process are as follows: The studs are sold as rough-cut lumber after emerging from the sawmill operation without further processing by Sonimad Sawmill. Also, the posts require no further processing. The decorative pieces can be sold immediately after emerging from the sawmill, or can be planed and further sized. This additional processing would cost the sawmill $100,000 per month and normally results in a loss of 10 percent of the units entering the process. The fully processed decorative pieces can sell at an average of $100 per unit. Required: 1. Based on the information given for Sonimad Sawmill, Inc., allocate the joint processing costs of $1,000,000 to each of the three product lines using the: a. Relative sales-value-at-split-off method b. Physical units method at split-off c. Estimated net realizable value method 2. Prepare an analysis for Sonimad Sawmill, Inc., to compare processing the decorative pieces further, with selling the rough-cut decorative pieces immediately at split-off. Be sure to provide all calculations. (CMAadapted)
