Guidelines for Developing a Philosophy of Nursing
Philosophy is concerned with the values and beliefs of a discipline and with the values and beliefs held by members of the discipline.

This paper can be written in the first person and should reflect your personal values and beliefs. Incorporate the four concepts of

the metaparadigm of nursing (person, environment, health, and nursing) into your narrative.

• What do you believe to be the core (essence) of nursing? From my personally perspective, I believe the core essence of nursing

is providing care, promoting education and maintain safety at all times.
• What do you consider to be the focus of nursing? Collaborating care (doctors, nurses, PT/OT, dietician, etc)
• Metaparadigm
o Person
 Who is the recipient of care? (Think outside the box) imaginary person
o Environment
 What is the significance of the environment of “the person”? (Think globally)
 What are the influences (or the effects) of the environment on “the person”? (Think globally) The aspect of human care and how

we deal with caring with our patient internally and externally
o Health
 What does health mean to you, personally and as a nurse? Health is the absent of disease
o Nursing
 What does “the person” need that you (the nurse) provide can provide? (Think beyond personal care) provide emotional support,

promote independent, education, home care service and to promote dignity.
 What does the term “nursing” signify to you personally? Providing care to patient and their family and maintain

confidentiality.
• What is your vision for yourself as a nurse? To be able to provide quality of care to patient, their family and to promote

emotional and physical need.
• What is unique about nurses and the nursing profession? Nursing is consider health and helping at their least point of their

need.

This paper must be typed, written in a scholarly manner, formatted in APA style with the use of level headings, and 3-4 (maximum)

pages.
