A disadvantage to control study conditions within quantitative research includes the questionable validity and reliability. Due to the subjective nature of qualitative data it is difficult to apply conventional standards of reliability and validity. An example of this, because of the personal role played by the researcher in the generation and development of this data, it is not possible to replicate qualitative studies. This is a disadvantage due to the principle that results from the study cannot be repeated with an expectation to receive the exact same results (McLeod, Saul, 2019).

In retrospect, quantitative research too has advantages and disadvantages that go along with control over study conditions in the research project process. In regards to generalizing results from a sample to a larger group of population a disadvantage to this technique in utilization with a qualitative research study is that the sample size is not randomly selected and often times finding and selecting appropriate sample population for the study can be difficult since the research is attempting to select individuals with a particular phenomenon, this becomes increasing difficult when translating the research to a much larger population. However, on the opposite end, this type of restriction helps formulate a case that is unique in its result findings and often times requires smaller sample sizes which allows for a more interpersonal experience from the research perspective (Vasileiou, Barnett, Thorpe, & Young, 2018).

The advantage to generalizing results from a sample to a larger group or population with the quantitative research approach is that it is generally easier to do since this research is numeric and can be expanded on more easily due to the nature of the type of research method. Since the strict nature of this methodology allows for rechecking the hypothesis to the study, extension into a larger population should be no problem at all. A disadvantage to this could be the lack of interpersonal relation by the researcher. A large sample size could increase the risk that one might miss observing phenomena because of too much focus on theory or on hypothesis testing verses the theory of hypothesis generation (Grand Canyon University, Center for Innovation in Research and Teaching, 2019).

The patient responded to 2 L of oxygen per nasal cannula with a SaO2 of 92%. The patient has diarrhea. His blood glucose level is elevated at 160 mg/dL. The white blood count is 15,000 and the C-reactive protein, a marker for inflammation, is elevated. The patient is being treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics and norepinephrine (Levophed) beginning at 2 mcg/min and titrated to keep systolic blood pressure greater than 100 mm Hg. A subclavian triple lumen catheter was inserted and verified by chest x-ray for correct placement. An arterial line was placed in the right radial artery to closely monitor the patient’s blood pressure during the usage of the vasopressor therapy.
