Science of Politics

I have a short essay to do, its only three questions. I will post the questions down below, and I will provide you with the power points that you have to read in order to answer the questions.

This is a multi-part essay assignment. You can answer each section separately or combine the questions into a single essay format.

1. Examine the “Science of Politics” Power Point (in your Week 1: Ch 1: Introducing the Ancient Debate Canvas Module), on the three main sources of “truth” (authority, personal reflection, or science). While I make the case that science has clear advantages (the scientific method, falsifiability, etc.), why does authority as a source of truth continue to have such a powerful impact on the contemporary political world? Why is this the case? Relate this to Lakoff’s “Don’t Underestimate Trump” from Chapter 6 of your “American Government Examined: Reader” Give a contemporary example. Is it justifiable for politicians to lie or mislead constituents because the politicians are confident in the overall “truth” of their agendas?

2. Drawing on Chapter One of your Novel Approach to Politics, the corresponding power point lecture outline (in your Theories and Ideologies Canvas Module), and lecture or video lecture clips, compare and contrast three different ideologies. Explain how are they similar and different. Which do you find most compelling? Why?

3. Compare and Contrast the following three opinion pieces. To various degrees, each of these pieces address how ideologies have evolved over the last decade in the United States. What do these evolutions have a common? How are they different? How do these articles fit into the spectrum of ideologies presented in Chapter One of your Novel Approach to Politics?

Scaffolding And Imitation

This week’s assignment is going to focus on imitation and understanding writing voice. This will be done in three parts. The first part of this assignment will be to complete the scaffolding exercise outlined in the textbook (p. 56). You will select a poem (this can be of your choosing or one of the poems in the book) and scaffold it in a similar fashion to the scaffold in the text (Note: Poem must be at least 15 lines long) using your own word choices.

The second part of this assignment will be to work on imitating the voice of prose. Select either Scarpa’s “I Go Back to Berryman’s” (p. 65) or Painter’s “The New Year” (p .69) and reread it. Then, using that piece as a template, attempt to write your own story while trying to capture the voice of the author. Think about the choices that the author is making while you do this (you should do this for about 10-15 minutes, but at least make sure it is a page long).

The third part of this assignment will be to provide a reflection for the two first parts. Think about the two different exercises. What did you learn? How did it feel to try and capture the different voices of these writers? Why do you feel the authors made the choices that they did? What prompted you to make the choices that you’ve done here? Were you surprised by anything? What have you learned about your own voice? What authors have inspired you and whose voices you’d like to imitate?

Write a thesis-driven essay that evaluates a single work, using specific reasoning/evidence derived from criteria to support your stance.

Evaluation Essay Assignment

Write a thesis-driven essay that evaluates a single work, using specific reasoning/evidence derived from criteria to support your stance.

Formatting

This assignment should follow MLA formatting guidelines.

Key Terms

  • Evaluation: a claim that something is good or bad, right or wrong, useful or not
  • Criteria: things that matter in deciding whether your subject succeeds or doesn’t succeed, is strong or weak, or good in some respects and poor in others
  • Balance and fair assessment: allows for shades-of-gray argument strategies. Rarely is anything all good or all bad, so you need to acknowledge any weaknesses in things you praise and any positives in things you criticize. For example, a movie may have spectacular visuals but a tired and clichéd plot.
  • Purpose: To practice and develop the ability to construct, define, and support evaluative criteria; to generate a thesis based on evaluative criteria, revise the thesis in order to increase its effectiveness, and arrange, draft, and write a persuasive essay.

Assignment Summary

For this assignment, you will write an evaluation about some type of media product (a book, movie, album, video game, etc). You will develop a set of criteria on which you will base your judgment, and using those criteria, will explain your judgment to your audience.

Assignment in Detail

Your evaluation will be similar to the book or movie reviews you might read online, but you will need to tailor it for an academic audience. You will provide a balanced assessment, so you will need to discuss both the positive and negative aspects (strengths and weaknesses) of your text. That being said, your evaluation will probably be stronger if you do not write about something you love; you may not see the flaws. First, you will decide on a text. Then, you will create a list of criteria that you may consider using to evaluate the text. While making this list, you should consider the text’s rhetorical situation, such as its genre, audience, purpose, and stance. With the rhetorical situation in mind, ask yourself what factors would make this book, movie, etc. successful. Then return to your subject and see which of these criteria it meets, and which it does not, and find examples of ways it does or does not meet your criteria. Your essay should be guided by a thesis statement that states your overall evaluation or judgment of the text. Since no text is perfect and none are completely without merit, your thesis should balance the pros and cons; it should offer a judgment of the text but qualify it according to your criteria. The criteria you choose should be clearly defined at the beginning of your essay. You should also include a concise description of the text you evaluate toward the beginning of your essay, since your audience may not be familiar with your subject.

Note that summarizing the text should be a small portion of the final essay.

The bulk of your essay should attempt to persuade your reader to accept your judgment of the text. Thus, you will need to incorporate the most convincing and important reasons why your judgment is correct. You will also need to consider how to best factually support your reasons. Do not use any outside sources beyond your chosen text.

Some thoughts about this assignment

  • Choose a subject that you are familiar with. For example, if you choose a book, choose one that you have read before, and then reread it. The more familiar you are with the subject, the better your essay will be.
  • Think carefully about purpose and stance. Do you want to encourage or discourage others ssay RubricEssay RubricCriteriaRatingsPtsThis criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeOrganization/attention to mode and assignmentOrganization is the physical structure of your paper, including the way you group those original ideas. If you have organizational issues, I mark the areas in which you’re struggling and try to give you advice. Attention to mode means exactly that: if we are writing a narrative, as in essay 2, you use narrative tactics and tell a story. If we are writing in process mode, you show the steps of the process. And so on. Attention to the assignment is also pretty clear. It means that, if I’ve asked you to write in a certain mode about a certain topic, you do that. If I ask you to include no outside information or sourced material, you go with that instruction.2.5ptsFull Marks0.0ptsNo Marks2.5pts

If you have issues finding the best word to express your thoughts, again, I will point that out and make suggestions. Some students make bad diction choices when they use a thesaurus to try and make their writing sound more sophisticated. Please don’t use a thesaurus. Instead, increase your active vocabulary by READING MORE. Style is really about the sophistication of your expression. • Your evaluative criteria are extremely important for this essay. Establish the criteria early on in the writing process. Your judgment of the work depends on these criteria. That means that if your criteria are weak or faulty, your judgment will follow, leaving your audience unconvinced

After you write your descriptive essay, take 100-150 words to answer these questions:

  • What is strongest in my essay? (What am I proudest of?)
  • What are my areas of weakness in this essay? What do I need to work on as I continue writing essays?
  • What would I change if I had another week to improve or revise this essay?
  • What did I learn from writing this essay that I’ll bring to my future essays?

What is the main argument or information conveyed?

An essay about the USA borders and immigration and how does immigrants have changed the USA she asked us to choose a topic that is related to borders and we should have a research question at the beganning that have lead me to choose my topic , I chose to talk about how borders and immigrants have improved the country’s (USA) economy in many ways including people who come to study in the recent years. Moreover, this essay as you know is sources essay it most be five sources: 3 articles that related to borders and US economy – 1 podcast and one E-BOOK with MLA citations

also I found this article I don’t know if it works you can find something else if you want https://www.brookings.edu/blog/brown-center-chalkb…

I will upload everything that the prof gave us

here are the prof directions:

PURPOSE: You can think of your source essay as a documentation of the research process you will use in future courses (and for life!). It will also serve as a kind of proposal for the research and ideas you will incorporate into the final paper for this course, the public essay. In order to form an understanding of the current conversation around your public essay, this annotated bibliography will act as proof of your research and readings and allow you to organize that research. It will also help you form your own position for the public essay as well as allow you to become conversant in current discussions about your topic.

DIRECTIONS: A bibliography makes a list of all the significant and relevant works you have consulted during the process of your research. An annotated bibliography also includes annotations that explain the significance of each source to your research. This is different from a Works Cited list, which lists the works that you end up actually making reference to in your essay.

This assignment begins by forming a strong research question that can be answered by doing online and library research. For this annotated bibliography, you will make reference to 5 sources that help answer this question, including at least one book chapter, one op-ed (or comparable published opinion piece), and one podcast. The sources you choose to include in your final annotated bibliography should each offer a unique perspective on the issues at stake in your research question that when put together offer a balanced and full conversation. In addition to a proper citation for each source, your bibliography will include an annotation of the source that is approximately 100-150 words. In a cohesive and concise paragraph, this annotation of each source will include:

  • A brief description of the contents – overview and outline of specifics. What is the main argument or information conveyed? What evidence does it use to make its argument?
  • A concise evaluation of the resource as it pertained to your research question and your own understanding of that question. What does the source contribute to the conversation surrounding your topic? Why do you think it is important for your research?

Your bibliography and each entry should be properly formatted in MLA style.

EVALUATION: Concise communication enables a wealth of material and ideas to be conveyed in a small space; therefore, an excellent annotated bibliography will not only be thorough and concise but also insightful. I will be looking at the way you argue for how your sources work together towards a full representation of the issues at stake in your research question—the bibliography should be cohesive—and whether or not you have found suitable sources. Just as important as your ability to summarize these sources, you must also demonstrate the ability to evaluate these sources and explain both the difference between each source and how they work together.
