Academic Success and Professional Development Plan
Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network

When was the last time you read Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions and Several Steps in my Sickness—Meditation XVII?

Unless you are a student of 17th-century poetry, you may not be all that familiar with this piece by author John Donne. However, you may be much more familiar with one of its well-known phrases: “No man is an island.”

As you begin your journey toward achieving your academic and professional goals, you have a great opportunity to network with academics and professionals who can help ensure you do not travel alone. This network can help to clarify your own vision for success and can help guide you now and in the future. To paraphrase Donne, no one is an island.

Begin creating an academic and professional network by identifying which academic and professional connections and resources you need to collaborate with to be successful in your MSN program and as a practicing nurse.

To Prepare:

  • Consider individuals, departments, teams, and/or resources within Walden University and within your profession that you believe can support your academic and professional success.
  • Identify at least two academic and at least two professional individuals, colleagues, or teams to collaborate with to help you be successful in your MSN program and as a practicing nurse.
  • Download the Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Template.

The Assignment:

(I AM AN RN CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN THE PSYCH NURSE PRACTITIONER PROGRAM I HAVE BEEN A NURSE SINCE 2011 MARRIED WITH 4 KIDS IN KANSAS) PLEASE ASK ME MORE QUESTIONS AS NEEDED.

CHN provides nursing in many settings. School nursing provides community health care for children in the United States.

CHN provides nursing in many settings. School nursing provides community health care for children in the United States. A school nurse is a registered nurse whose main focus is the health and well being of all students. “The school nurse is responsible for monitoring the health of all students” (Nies & McEwen, p. 587, 2018). School nurses maintain health records such as vaccinations, provide screenings such as vision and hearing, provide emergency care, and care of the ill child.

Based on the three levels of care, primary, secondary, and tertiary, a level of prevention is secondary. The school nurse, functioning as a CHN, provides secondary care. A level of prevention is secondary care. “Examples include immunization and taking regular exercise to prevent health problems developing in the future” (Lumen). Secondary prevention includes those preventive measures that lead to early diagnosis and prompt treatment of disease, illness, or injury.

At this level of prevention, the nurse can, 1- schedule routine screenings for vision and hearing, scoliosis, eating disorders, obesity, anxiety, depression, anger, dental, and abuse. 2- Identify case findings, identify at-risk students. 3- Provide treatment, administer medications, develop individual health plans, implement procedures and tasks necessary for special needs students, and administer first aid. 4- Arrange for home visits. Assist with family counseling and assess special and at-risk students.

Identifying, building, and providing appropriate preventative health care, school nurses assist schools to the health and well-being of their children.

Evolving Practice of Nursing and Patient Care Delivery Models

Evolving Practice of Nursing and Patient Care Delivery Models

As the country focuses on the restructuring of the U.S. health care delivery system, nurses will continue to play an important role. It is expected that more and more nursing jobs will become available out in the community, and fewer will be available in acute care hospitals.

  1. Write an informal presentation (500-700 words) to educate nurses about how the practice of nursing is expected to grow and change. Include the concepts of continuity or continuum of care, accountable care organizations (ACO), medical homes, and nurse-managed health clinics.
  2. Share your presentation with nurse colleagues on your unit or department and ask them to offer their impressions of the anticipated changes to health care delivery and the new role of nurses in hospital settings, communities, clinics, and medical homes.
  3. In 800-1,000 words summarize the feedback shared by three nurse colleagues and discuss whether their impressions are consistent with what you have researched about health reform.
  4. A minimum of three scholarly references are required for this assignment.

While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

Complete a test blueprint to help identify what the population knows from a pre-test.

Directions

Design a test blueprint for a pre-test for nursing staff as nutrition trainers to their patients

This Assignment is designed to assess the level of knowledge of your chosen population from Unit 3 Assignment before presenting the course content. This is what a test blueprint is all about: Ensuring you have the right types and levels of difficulty of test questions. Whether the questions are used to assess the learner’s level of knowledge before content is delivered or judge if the learner’s knowledge after the intervention is where it should be is not the point of a test blueprint. The test blueprint will help with the development and revision of the curriculum you have created to this point.

Complete a test blueprint to help identify what the population knows from a pre-test.

The test blueprint for your pre-test will need to contain the following:

  • Three to five course outcomes
  • Appropriate level of Bloom’s Taxonomy for each outcome based upon your chosen population with rational and citations
  • Number of questions related to the outcomes based upon the total number of questions which will need to reflect the population (e.g., x questions/y total [nursing student questions may total 100, but nursing staff may total 10 versus 5 for community/patients; weighted total needs to be 100%])
  • The weighted percentage each item represents from the course content
  • Appropriate testing methodology for the chosen population. Include rational with appropriate citations (e.g., low income, illiterate patient would not be given a written pre-test, but a picture, image, or slide presentation to choose the answer from). Remember there are many different types of testing methodologies: Pictograms, pen-and-paper exams, computerized drag and drop, and so on.

Resources on Nursing Home Care

At present, there are around 16,000 nursing homes with 1.7 million beds and about a 15 percent vacancy rate. (See: CDC – Resources on Nursing Home Care).

Clearly, unless the nation undertook a massive building program, there will be more old people than the number of available number of Long Term Care (LTC) beds.

So what are we going to do with all the baby boomers?

Are LTC beds the only place to put them? Are there other alternatives that are more cost-efficient? Given issues of quality — either perceived or actual — in many LTCs, do we really even want to keep traditional nursing homes as an option? What might old people really want? What are younger people willing to support financially? What role might pharmaceutical products have in managing age-related issues? What would be the best way for people to age out into death? How do other countries around the world care for their elderly?

What role does culture play in this discussion? How do other nations address this issue?

As we think about answers to those questions, there is another level of analysis that looks at the ethics of old age. For example, do you think that everyone has the right to use all the Medicare services they want – regardless of the decisions made about their health when they were younger? In other words, should all old people share an equal right to Federally supported healthcare even if they did not share the same level of responsibility in their earlier choices regarding food, exercise, drugs, and alcohol?

A second question to consider is whether or not the Government should have any voice in restricting one’s personal choices about dying. Should everyone have the right to die when they want to, regardless of the situation or reasons? Who and how should an end-of-life decision be made when the person is not in possession of their full faculties?

Lots to ponder this week…
