English Literature studies 4

Discussion 1: Describe the young Candide and his upbringing. How does this portrayal set up the author’s focus of satire?

Part 1 Study Questions

Chapter 3

  1. Two major themes of Candide are presented in chapter 3. How are the theme of evil, in the form of war, and the theme of religion developed here?

Chapter 8

  1. What insight into the character of Cunegonde does this chapter provide?

Chapter 11

  1. The old woman’s commentary serves various purposes. How does it:

a. highlight the worldly-wise, unflappable character of the old woman?

b. illustrate the universality of evil and emphasize the author’s sarcasm?

c. bring you down to earth.

Chapter 14-15

  1. Voltaire focuses on the Jesuit order as he continues jabbing away at religion. How are the Jesuits described, and explain the nature of Voltaire’s critical portrayal.

Chapter 18

  1. What are the chief characteristics of Eldorado? The meaning of Candide and Cacambo’s decision to leave Eldorado can be seen as a rejection by Voltaire of the very idea of “utopia,” or a “perfect” state. Is Voltaire saying that utopias are worthwhile to think about, but impossible to achieve? Is he saying that maybe utopias are even undesirable?

Discussion 2: Part of Voltaire’s gift for satire and comedy is that he writes literally about one thing but clearly implies another. Find an example of this and explain what is really going on.

Part 2 Study Questions

Chapter 22

  1. Candide’s stay in France, though brief, is treated in detail by Voltaire. Most of the chapter is devoted to a satire of the over-sophisticated society of Paris as witnessed by the simple foreigner, Candide. What are the chief characteristics of Parisian society as portrayed by Voltaire?

Chapter 29-30

  1. How does Candide’s reaction to the baron’s arrogance demonstrate the change he has undergone? What changes have taken place in Candide by the end of the novella?
  2. The object of satire in the poem is the philosophical principle of optimism. Find an example where a character subscribes to the theory and applies its principles, but in a way that readers are clearly to take as foolish.
  3. A common motif throughout the work is the garden. Find and comment on a few instances where garden imagery seems important.
  4. If Candide is largely a satire of the philosophical principle of optimism (which Voltaire found unconvincing), can you identify an alternative philosophy that the text endorses?

Advocating For Public Health Policy

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 8 in your textbook, and review Chapter 5 sections on policy. Read the Stop the Global Epidemic of Chronic Disease: A Practical Guide to Successful Advocacy. Links to an external site.Review the Policy Statements and Advocacy Links to an external site.web page and How to Write a Health Policy Brief. Finally, review the grading rubric for grading criteria.

Imagine that you have been chosen to represent a public health advocacy group as they begin a campaign to get legislation related to a health issue passed in your state legislature. You have been tasked with the role of presenting a proposed policy to the legislature and advocating that the legislature vote for the policy. You have been told that you will have 10 minutes to present to the legislature.

For this assignment, you will create an 8 to 10-minute presentation. Your presentation should be informative, but also persuasive, and be absolutely no longer than 10 minutes but no less than 8 minutes. Your presentation can be created using Screencast-O-MaticLinks to an external site., the camera and microphone on your computer or handheld device within Canvas, or you can create slides using the voice recording functions within a presentation program (like PowerPoint). Instructions on how to use these tools are below. Professional dress, attitude, and clear communication matters for this assignment. The legislature will need to make a decision about whether or not to vote for the policy based on your presentation. Your presentation should be structured exactly as if you were “live” in front of the legislature advocating for them to adopt the policy you are proposing.

For your presentation, you will need to select a public health topic of interest to you (you are encouraged to choose one related to your academic major or intended field of work) and a public health policy related to addressing the topic. You may select an actual proposed policy or create one that you think would effectively address the topic. Your presentation should provide enough information about the topic and the proposed policy that a reasonably educated legislator should be able to make an informed decision. Be sure to consider the various questions that a legislator might have about the issue and proposed policy, such as long-term costs and benefits, potential effects on business and industry (especially those that support politicians’ campaigns), and how the policy will support the health and productivity of state residents.

Your presentation should address each of the following points:

· Discuss the public health issue that your proposed policy is intended to address. Questions to consider:

o Who does this health issue affect?

o What is the impact of this health issue on the community?

o Why does this health issue need to be addressed?

· Explain the proposed public health policy. Questions to consider:

o Who will be affected by this policy?

o How will this policy address the health issue?

o What will change by enacting this policy?

· Evaluate the impacts of the proposed policy. Questions to consider:

o What are the costs and benefits of the policy?

o What are the risks of enacting or not enacting the policy?

o How will the lives of people who are affected by the health issue change if this policy is enacted?

· Create an influential presentation that affects voting behaviors of legislators. Questions to consider:

o What information about this policy would potentially affect the voting behavior of legislators from across the political spectrum (e.g. conservative, moderate, liberal, progressive; particularly those who might not support the policy based on political orientation)?

o What are the most important messages that legislators need to hear about this policy?

o How would the constituents of the legislators voting for this policy feel about this policy and a legislator who votes for it?

o What information would a legislator need to “sell” the policy to constituents who were perhaps not in favor of adopting the policy?

The Advocating for Public Health Policy assignment

· Must be 8 to 10-minute formal presentation recorded as a video, screencast, or using the voice recording functions in a presentation program.

· Must include at least 100 words in the presenter’s notes for each slide if choosing a presentation program.

o You may want to look at How to Make a PowerPoint PresentationLinks to an external site. to get started. Pay attention to APA style and formatting in this “how to” guide. APA guidelines are required in presentations and any scholarly work you create.

· Must include a separate title slide with the following:

o Title of presentation

o Students name

o Course name and number

o Instructor’s name

o Date submitted

· Must utilize academic voice. See the Academic VoiceLinks to an external site.resource for additional guidance.

· Must include an introduction and conclusion statement. Your introduction needs to end with a clear statement that indicates the purpose of your presentation.

· Must include a separate reference slide or reference page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. See the Formatting Your References ListLinks to an external site. resource in the Ashford Writing Center for specifications.

· Must use speakers notes as follows:

o Review the PowerPoint Speaker NotesLinks to an external site. video tutorial. (YouTube Accessibility StatementLinks to an external site. and Privacy PolicyLinks to an external site.)

o Speaker notes are the typed notes that appear below the slide that complement the presentation slides. Whereas the slides will have short bulleted items, the speaker notes will be more detailed. They are essentially what the presenter would say during the presentation to explain each of the bulleted points on the slide. Therefore, it is important that the speaker notes are concise and detailed when explaining the bullet points.

o It is recommended that PowerPoint Slides contain no more than five bullet points and should not contain more than seven to 10 words each. Do not type paragraphs or long sentences on the slide. The information that explains each bullet point is conveyed via speaker notes or by recording your voice to each slide.

Review the data presented in the ANA Fast Facts and describe some of the key attributes/characteristics of this sample of the nursing workforce.

  • Review the data presented in the ANA Fast Facts and describe some of the key attributes/characteristics of this sample of the nursing workforce.

After reading the Nursing World link, some of the key attributes/characteristics of the sample nursing workforce are that the nurses set to enter the job force, are just enough to replace the nurses leaving the field, as the average age of todays nurse is 50. While nurses are retiring in every state, most of the areas with the growing need for nurses are in the west or Texas, which is also where nurses are paid relatively well. While San Fransisco nurses make great money, they also pay an arm and a leg to live.

  • Discuss some of the data that you found interesting; include what you believe the purpose (intent) of ANA sharing these results.

I found it interesting that Massachusetts has the second highest concentration of nurses in the United States (1 nurse for every 100 people). I also found it interesting that the average age of todays nurse is 50, while over half of nurses working are 53 or older! I certainly don’t hope to retire by then, however it is a good indication that once you become a nurse you may be happy enough to stay in this field for life.

  • The instruments and tools that we use to collect data need to be reliable and valid. Define these terms and explain the importance of each. Share one way that can be used to collect data that you were not aware of or familiar with.

According to the text, in order for data to be reliable it needs to be consistent. In order for it to be valid, it needs to be accurate. It’s important for data to be valid, as you want the information you’re providing to be correct. What’s the point of sharing the data if it’s not right? It’s important for data to be reliable, as if the information is retrieved from a test only performed once, there’s a chance that it was luck and the test may be wrong in the future. One way you can collect data that I was not familiar with is by researching transfer paperwork within a hospital regarding a hospital stay (Sarkles, Bowles & Skinner, et al, 2105).

Consultant pharmacists are important because they aid in the improvement of senior care and quality of life for institutionalized seniors.

Informative Speech Outline

Specific Purpose: At the end of my speech, the audience will be able to describe what consultant pharmacists are, some jobs they perform, and some advantages of utilizing consultant pharmacists in senior care facilities.

Central Idea: Consultant pharmacists are important because they aid in the improvement of senior care and quality of life for institutionalized seniors.

INTRODUCTION

  1. When you think of a pharmacist, what comes to mind?
  2. People typically think of filling prescriptions and counseling patients in a retail setting.
  3. I will speak about the consultant pharmacist today, which wikipedia.com defines as a “specialized pharmacist who focuses on reviewing and managing the medication regimens of patients, particularly those in institutional settings such as nursing homes.”
  4. According to ascp.com, “There are 5.5 million seniors with long-term disabilities in the United States. This figure is expected to increase to 10 million by the year 2020, and to 20 million by 2040.”
  5. Consultant pharmacists are important because they aid in the improvement of senior care and quality of life for individuals living in institutions like nursing homes.

Transition: To understand the importance of consultant pharmacists you must further understand what they are.

BODY

  • These are some of the characteristics of consultant pharmacists.
    • Completed pharmacy school
    • Medication therapy experts
    • Have specific knowledge of geriatric care
    • Typically work for, or own their own firm or practice
  • There are many jobs these pharmacists perform, but these are a few of great importance.
    • Check that prescribed medications are appropriate for older patients.
    • Double check that certain medications are safe to use together.
    • Adjust drug regimens or possibly medication types to prevent or reduce adverse side effects because about 28% of hospitalizations of seniors are due to adverse drug effects, according to ascp.com
    • Possibly adjust medication dosages or brands to save patient money.

Transition: Now that you understand the type of people that work as consultants, you will see how they perform many jobs to help patients.

Transition: These results I have just presented are very important, we will probably all agree.

CONCLUSION

  1. ascp.com states that “There are more than 1.6 million nursing home beds in the United States; this represents an increase of over 25% since 1980.”
  2. Since there is an increase of this magnitude, the significance of the consultant pharmacist is growing as well.
  3. Senior citizens are important to all of us here, so the work of consultants is of the utmost importance because we want the elderly to be well taken care of.
  4. Thank you very much for your attention.

This week’s graded discussion topic relates to the following Course Outcomes (COs).

  • CO1 Utilize prior knowledge of theories and principles of nursing and related disciplines to explain expected client behaviors, while differentiating between normal findings, variations, and abnormalities. (PO 1)
  • CO3 Utilize effective communication when performing a health assessment. (PO 3)

The topic this week asks you to apply what you have learned to the following case study.

As the school nurse working in a college health clinic, you see many opportunities to promote health. Maria is a 40-year-old Hispanic who is in her second year of nursing school. She complains of a 14-pound weight gain since starting school and is afraid of what this will do to both her appearance and health if the trend continues. After conducting her history, you learn that she is an excellent cook and she and her family love to eat foods that reflect their Hispanic heritage. She is married with two school-age children. She attends class a total of 15 hours per week, plus she must be present for 12 hours of labs and clinical. She maintains the household essentially by herself and does all the shopping, cooking, cleaning, and chauffeuring of the children. She states that she is lucky to get 6 hours of sleep per night, but that is okay with her. She lives 1 hour from campus and commutes each day. Using Healthy People 2020 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and your text as a guide, answer the following questions.

  1. What additional information would you like to gather from Maria?
  2. What are Maria’s real and potential health risks?
  3. Why is Maria’s culture important when obtaining the health assessment?
  4. Pick one of Maria’s health risks. What would be one reasonable short-term goal for this risk?
  5. What nursing interventions would you incorporate into Maria’s plan of care to assist her with meeting your chosen goal? Please provide rationale for your selections.
  6. Class,

As we begin this week starting to talk about Healthy People 2020, I am looking forward to your input and answers to the questions with the scenario and Maria. As you are reviewing the Healthy People 2020 new topic areas, in this week’s lesson, what are your thoughts on them? Do any of these topics apply to your current workplace setting? Can you share an example of the scenario or a workplace example, and would these new areas benefit you in your practice?

Changing the health of our nation-The Role of Nurse Coaches

Please write a paragraph responding to the discussion bellow. Add citations and references in alphabetical order.

Conceptually, in time past the center and emphasis of concerns existed was portrayed on disease-oriented health care system but now the health care reform is shifting the focus from a disease-oriented health care system toward wellness and prevention. Probably owing to the immense number of people living with a chronic disease about 75% of the nation’s total health care consumption resulted from caring for individuals with chronic diseases (National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA), 2013). Protracted and chronic disease not merely affects health and quality of life, but it is also the main domain of health care and consequently ensuing in accumulative health insurance costs (NAIFA, 2013).

The health care reform shifting regarding wellness and prevention is to keep health insurance affordable. While chronic diseases have been establishing to raise the cost of healthcare, the prevention of chronic disease will invariably help and support lower health care cost. The hallmark objective is to facelift and basically educate the public to optimistically and absolutely prevent chronic diseases. The reform has acknowledged and identified three risk dynamics that are related with the development of chronic diseases: poor diet, inactivity, and smoking (NAIFA, 2013). Education programs with sound lifestyle modification on disease prevention, such as proper dietary, exercise and healthier lifestyles will encourage and inspire sound health and longevity, therefore plummeting and reducing the financial encumbrance on the healthcare delivery system (NAIFA, 2013).

Nursing care presumptively fits into this transference regarding wellness and prevention because health and wellness education have generally and historically been a fundamental and integral propensity or element of nursing practice (Luck, 2013). Nurses possess and retain the indispensable tools to fashion and create health education programs that encircle the nations renewed attention and motivation on wellness and prevention. However, the nursing profession is centralized on offering and providing individualize holistic care. Providing care to the individualize care is essential and imperative as nurses teach prevention and wellness strategies to keep their healthy patients wholesome. Furthermore, nurses are obligate to dynamically partner with physicians to promote the value of an integrative standard and model of health and wellness (Luck, 2013).
