A rubric will be attached below. The paper should be a review of the literature on a topic relevant to child psychopathology. This will be elaborated in the on-line class discussion. You will also be asked to complete a module on academic integrity in order to help you avoid making a mistake. DUE ON JUNE 13TH.

What is the relationship between neoliberal education, oppression, and hegemony?

Overview

Now that we have established a mutual understanding of critical theory, and the private and public purposes of schooling, etc., we will transition to learning about and practicing democratic education and critical pedagogy. This means that we will endeavor to move toward a different understanding about what the radical possibilities and purposes of education can and should be.

The following readings and CRR assignment aim to introduce you to more democratic and critical models of teaching and learning.

Note: Feel free to create a Sketchboard (instead of a written CRR) in response to the CRR questions. You can the use Screencastify to narrate how the images/symbols and connections you make answer the questions below. Then, you can submit the link to your screencast through this assignment page.

Readings Due:

  1. Freire, P. (1970/2006). Pedagogy of the Oppressed. (Ch. 2) (note that the PDF is a full copy of the book, but you only need to read Ch. 2)

Examine them carefully and collect information and observations for a longer, formal essay.

For this short paper, select 2-3 ads or commercials with a common theme. I suggest you choose closely related ads. These can be print ads (still images) or commercials (moving images). Feel free to include both still and moving images in your selection.

You might select ads or commercials from the same advertising campaign ( Always’ “#likeagirl,” Nike’s “Find Your Greatness,” or “Dream Crazy,” Dove “Real Beauty”), or ads/commercials from the same company made in a similar time span (Ax, Old Spice, Chevy, Doritos, Pantene) or you can select ads/commercials selling a similar product made in a similar time span (hair products from the 70s, vacuums from the 50s, perfume from the 90s). Keep track of each ad/commercial you choose and include a link for each ad/commercial you have chosen at the end of your paper.

The point is not to compare ads/commercials but rather to examine them carefully and collect information and observations for a longer, formal essay.

  1. For each ad/commercial include the name of the company and the product they are selling. If no specific product appears, make a note of this in your paper. Also include the year the ad/commercial was published/made.
  2. Examine the denotative meaning: Briefly describe what you can see and hear in the ads/commercials. Are there dominant images, colors, settings, is there text on the screen? Is there background music, sound effects? What lines of dialogue stand out to you? (Think of this section as a journalistic report about the ads/commercials.)
  3. Next, examine the connotative meaning: this requires you to dig deep into the meaning and connotations of the images and dialogue you have already observed. You should focus more on the connotative meaning than the denotative meaning. Are the images in the ads/commercials intended to make the viewer feel something? If so what is that feeling and how does the add seek to make the viewer feel it? What meanings are associated with the images? What are the key words in the ads/commercials? What are the connotations of these words? What feeling, experience, identity is the company trying to sell?

pressing social issue

FinalThe final research paper should examine a pressing social issue related to one of the ethnic groups we covered in class. The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate critical thinking across various perspectives, problem-posing inquiries, and attainable answers to complex problems in society. The final paper must identify a research question, address that question, and suggest concrete solutions regarding a particular group. Students must pay attention to dissenting viewpoints, provide critical analysis, and incorporate references from the course and outside the course in the final paper. Topics MUST be approved by the instructor. This final paper, which should be an APA style formatted 5-6 page paper (8 pages MAX not including reference pages), double spaced in length, should not only include a critical analysis of the selected topic, but also should provide further research on the topic, and offer new interpretations, or creative ways to rethink about these varying issues within the United States. Sample topics could include: Health disparities, school to prison pipeline, immigration reform, culturally sensitive therapy, culturally competence child care, drug or alcohol dependency, mental health, etc. You will also be required to physically bring in your paper during finals week. More details and a grading rubric will be provided before the assignment is due. Students may work in pairs to complete research but need to turn in an individual assignment. Visit the campus writing center or review the APA style format guide book for further writing assistance:
