n this analysis you will consider in detail the emotions that the poet expresses in the poem. Choose any short poem in your text of 25 lines or less that is not on your syllabus, but is in your book. In an essay of approximately 3 typed pages in length, discuss the emotion(s) expressed in the poem by the poet. Include your own original title, not the title of the poem.

Pre-writing: Consider the following questions, all of which may or may not be relevant to your poem: What is the subject of the poem? What is the poet’s attitude toward this subject; that is, what is the poet’s tone? Does the tone change during the course of the poem? Your thesis statement should deal with these questions. In the body of your essay discuss the ways in which the poet expresses his or her emotions/tone in the poem: images? metaphors? similes? a persona? diction? sound? conventional themes? Does the form of the poem (sonnet, ode, dramatic monologue, etc.) or even its shape contribute to the expression of the emotion? Again, you don’t need to answer all of these questions: decide which elements are important in your poem.

Organization:

Introduction: Give the poet’s name and the title of the poem (in quotation marks) and a thesis statement. (Also give the page number of the poem in your book).

Body: Include at least 3 body paragraphs. A very effective way to organize your essay is to divide the poem into sections: if it is divided into stanzas discuss each one separately, or if there are no stanzas, decide how to divide it into major parts based on changes in theme or tone. (Look at punctuation for cues.)

Conclusion: In your conclusion consider your own response to the poem. Does it evoke similar emotions in you? Do you empathize with the poet? Can you connect it with your personal experience?

Quotations of poetry: Use quotations from the poem as support for your points. Follow the same procedure for quoting and leading-in as you did with fiction, but instead of giving the page number, give line numbers. If you quote more than one line, put a slash / between the lines:

The speaker warns his reluctant lady of the inevitability of the grave: “then worms shall try / That long preserved virginity” (27-28).

Don’t quote more than 3 lines at one time in a short essay. (Longer quotations should be blocked.)

Step by Step

Step 1. For each source, your annotation will include two paragraphs (approximately 300 words total). The first paragraph will summarize the source’s key ideas. Use the 4-sentence rhetorical summary model addressed in Project 1 Part 1. The second annotation paragraph will address the credibility of the source and note the links, patterns, similarities, and/or variances between the source and the other two sources.

Step 2. After you have compiled your annotations and synthesized their arguments and drawn preliminary conclusions about your subtopic, you are ready to write your introduction. This opening paragraph should introduce your reader to your subtopic area and identify what people/stakeholders might be interested in or influenced by your subtopic. The “obvious” in a given reading is vital, but pursuing the implications of your observations means not settling for merely the first thought. Keep plumbing the text. Ultimately, you are working towards a reading that explores what the text means to you. Your creative faculties are essential in any academic interpretation. However, this is not an exercise in creative writing per se; all your assertions must be rigorously tied to the evidence of the text itself. Again, the literary text is your evidence.

Furthermore, to avoid vast, nebulous, generic, and banal openings that merely tread water and serve no real purpose, I strongly suggest that all papers begin with well-selected epigraphs that articulate the issue or question to be analyzed. Explanation of what the epigraph means and how it applies to the larger thrust of the paper will facilitate the movement into a thesis that is specific and thoughtful.

Quoting generously from the primary text/s is essential. Please use the MLA parenthetical format for citations. This will mean listing author (Hardy, Yeats, etc.) and page number in the Norton. In the event that you are quoting or paraphrasing from multiple works by the same author, you will need to abbreviate the title and include it in the parenthetical citation. Two examples might be: (Hardy, “Hap” 44) and (Hardy, “Convergence” 54). If you are using only one text by an author, skip the abbreviated title in the parenthetical citation. Each paper should have a Works Cited listed at the end of the essay—though this should not be a separate page. (Don’t waste the paper.) NB: Regardless of what any official MLA guidelines state, do not cite poems by line numbers unless you are citing books/cantos and line numbers from an epic. In the real world, no publisher uses line numbers for citations of lyric poems; publishers use page numbers from actual texts.

Several seemingly minor points that make a difference:

Include a word count at the end of the paper.
Include page numbers in the upper right corner of all pages after the first page.
Include an original and creative title that speaks to your topic and thesis.
Staple all papers. I do not want paper clips or loose pages or dog-eared pages.
Avoid sentence fragments; every sentence must have a subject and a verb.
Avoid fused sentences, semicolon problems, and run-on sentences as well.
Limit any use of first and second person pronouns. Keep the language objective and scholarly for the most part—yet, do not be afraid to use a first person pronoun if you find such use strategically beneficial. Every word, punctuation mark, quotation… is there for a purpose!

In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh established a colony on Roanoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. With winter approaching, John White, the governor of the colony, sailed to England to bring food and equipment. But, White’s return trip was delayed, and it was three years before he saw the colony again. Upon his return, White found the entire colony deserted. There were no signs of violence and everything had been left in place. On one tree, the letters CRO had been carved; another bore the word CROATOAN. White hypothesized that the colonialists had moved to the Croatoan Island, about fifty miles away. His captain disagreed, arguing that they might have been taken prisoner or massacred by the Croatoan Indians. But because there was no cross after the message, which would have warned White of trouble, he believed that the colonists must not have been in danger when they left. White made plans to sail to the Croatoan Island, but storms forced him to return to England instead. Five other search expeditions were sent to locate the colonists, but none met with any success. Hypothesis #1: The colonists were running out of supplies and feared that White would not return in time. They decided to sail back to England, but their ship was lost at sea.

Hypothesis #2: The colonists were highly religious people who often practiced meditation. They discovered a plant with special spiritual qualities, which allowed them to enter a spiritual realm. While in the spiritual realm, they still inhabit the world, although they cannot be seen by others or in any way interact with the physical realm. They can, however, pass freely between the physical and spiritual realms at will. When White returned, they tried to let him know that they were safe, but he couldn’t see them. They decided to leave a message for him, so they carved CROATOAN in the tree. But White didn’t understand the importance of their message and he was unable to enter the spiritual realm the colonists still inhabit today.
