Did you survive a natural disaster? What was your role in this circumstance? What did you do? For example, if you were in a hurricane describe what happened, who you were with and how you survived.

Conclusion

The most important factor to consider in a personal narrative is yourself. Choose an idea for a personal narrative that intrigues you. If your personal narrative bores you, it’ll bore readers. You want to write a descriptive personal story with vivid characters, action, and emotions.

Also, select a story you want to share with others. You’re revealing not just what happened to you, but also a piece of yourself. Is your personal story something you want people to know?

It’s your story. You decide what to write and who reads it. Then write it well.

This week during lecture we began thinking about the “College For All Philosophy” and Student Loan Debt. Based on the ideas presented in the course readings, the points made during lecture and within the documentary we watched, here are four sets of questions for you to write about:

1. What’s the point of going to college? Critically evaluate two justifications for attending college, and be sure to mention the social origins of these competing explanations. (For example, if college is for “getting a good job,” why do we share this notion in society?)

2. On Wednesday during class, we watched Default: The Student Loan Documentary. What did you think about the documentary? How did watching it make you feel? All things considered, do you believe that taking out student loans to finance a college education is a wise financial decision?

3. Given the phenomena of student loan debt, propose two specific actions that we all could take to remedy the student debt crisis. Why do you believe those specific actions would make a positive difference in alleviating the personal troubles experienced by borrowers and their families?

4. Is student loan debt a form of modern-day indentured servitude? Why or why not?

Your text discusses diffusion of responsibility—a belief that others will help someone, leading to a lessened sense of responsibility and a lower probability of helping. To demonstrate the diffusion of responsibility, when you are at work, on campus, in public, or in some other situation, act as if you need help with some minor problem. For example, you can look around confusedly while holding a map, drop your books or something that will scatter a bit. Do something innocuous and harmless to yourself. Do this a couple of times: once when there are several people present and once when there are only one or two people around.

After you complete these experiments, write down your notes right away. Compose an essay addressing the following points:

  • Describe what you did.
  • Explain the response to the situation when many people were present and when only a few people were present.
  • Discuss whether there were any differences in behavior when many people were present and when few people were present.
  • Discuss if the people’s responses fit with the text’s discussion of the bystander effect. If your demonstration did not work out, explain why you think it might not have.
