The Lottery

Your assignment is to write an essay about a tradition or practice that you believe has no place in the modern world. Specifically, consider things that we do that you feel are outdated, practices that no longer really make sense. Much like in “The Lottery,” where the villagers no longer even really know why they are holding an annual lottery, consider traditions or practices in your own life or in our society and argue against them.

The subject you choose is up to you, but the goal will be to argue that this practice or tradition is outdated and should no longer be practiced. You do not have to use external sources; the essay can come entirely from experience or personal knowledge. It can be as many paragraphs as you like, but it must be at least 500 words.

The Changing Landscape of Work in the Twenty-First Century

Assignment: Critique

Length: 1500-1800 words

Mechanics: Use 12-point Times New Roman font, default margins, double-spacing, correct APA documentation. You may double-side or single-side the document.

Write a critique on any one of the assigned essays in “Chapter 12: The Changing Landscape of Work in the Twenty-First Century” (pp.433-472). Follow the guidelines provided in “Chapter 2: Critical Reading and Critique” (pp. 51-77) – review “Guidelines for Writing Critiques” (p. 68). Below is a general overview of the five parts of a critique:

1. Write a clear introduction (one paragraph). Give the author’s full name, the title of the essay, and the author’s thesis in the first sentence. Explain the author’s purpose in writing the essay: what is he/she trying to get the reader to think or do? Provide some general information about the article’s topic and the issues involved. Explain your general opinion of the essay. Do you think that the essay was well written or persuasive? Why or why not? Finally, state your own position on the issue (your thesis or major argument).

2. Give a clear summary of the article that you will be commenting on (one paragraph). Be objective, coherent, and complete in your summary. That is, do not add your opinion of the topic or your evaluation of the essay here. Use markers like “The author suggests that . . .” to make it clear that you are paraphrasing someone else’s opinion and not stating your own. Avoid unintentional plagiarism: use your own wording and sentence structures. Add one or two short quotations.

3. Analyze the article (two paragraphs). In one paragraph, evaluate the essay on such rhetorical aspects as accuracy, validity, fairness, significance, organization, language, and audience. Is the author successful in persuading you? Why or why not? Then, in a second paragraph, evaluate the author’s use of appeals (look at pages 132-136 in the textbook)—emotional, logical, and ethical. Give specific examples of each appeal and explain them. Are they appropriate or persuasive in the essay? Why or why not?

4. Respond to the ideas of the article (two or three paragraphs). Find at least two articles from Academic Search Complete database and use at least two essays from Chapter 12 of the textbook (besides the essay that you are criticizing). Do not use online Google searches. Use your research to support your opinion concerning the topic. Do you agree with the author or not?Why or why not? All sources must be paraphrased. You may quote as well, but do so sparingly – and use lead-in phrases.

5. The conclusion (one paragraph). Return to the article and summarize your opinion about its validity and persuasiveness. What are its weaknesses and strengths? Restate (in new words) your major arguments on the topic.

Be sure to provide a correct APA-style References page. You should have five entries.

Provide a word count at the end of the document.

Frankenstein Critical Analysis Evaluation

Assignment Instructions: Frankenstein Critical Analysis Evaluation Essay

Note: Please review the source guidelines below very carefully. If you do not choose from the provided sources below, this will cause a grading delay and you will need to resubmit the assignment.

For this assignment, you will write your evaluation essay. You are required to submit only your final draft for this assignment (though we encourage all students to take advantage of the additional feedback a draft can provide). Use the grader’s feedback and the rubric to make revisions to your draft before submitting the final. Your second draft will be graded.

Now that you have completed Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, you are in a good position to consider what critics have written about the novel. You will need a total of two critiques (also known as critical analysis essays) for this assignment.

First, use the selection of links below to locate a critical analysis essay written about the 1818 version of Mary Shelley’s novel. You may focus most of your attention on this first critique.

i just need someone to paraphrase the whole thing. Thanks

Summary

This set of studies investigated a case of stress and displacement singularity. A cantilever beam, fixed at two points to represent spot welds and receiving a 1000 N load on one face was analyzed. Using 3-D solid elements in h and p adaptive static studies, the stress and displacement results failed to converge and showed unrealistically high values. This indicates that modeling the spot welds as single points created a false restraint condition which allowed singularities to develop. Six additional static studies were performed on 2-D shell elements with various element sizes and orders. In these six studies the stress and displacement results were shown to converge, despite the faulty restraints.

Introduction

The cantilever beam like the one in this study is a common sight in engineering applications. In the design of such a beam, it would be critical to know the stresses and displacements that would be experienced under the expected loading conditions. By failing to properly restrain the model and choosing the wrong type of study, results were attained that offered no insight into how the beam would perform in real life.

Geometry

The CAD model is a simple flat plate with dimensions of 120 x 20 x 1 mm. Given the simplicity of the model, solid or shell elements are both a reasonable choice.

Results and Analysis

Table 2 compares the results of the eight studies. Both adaptive studies show unrealistically high stress and displacement results, indicating an error in modeling or in the FEA setup. By modeling the spot welds as single points, an unrealistic restraint condition has been created that has allowed stress and displacement singularities to develop. The mesh convergence graphs in figures 1 and 2 show the data is growing exponentially rather than leveling off as you would expect if the model was properly restrained. Convergence will not take place under these modeling conditions.

Figures 3 and 4 show convergence in the cases with 2-D shell elements. This indicates convergence can still be achieved in a 2-D simplified model when the 3-D element model has singularities.

Conclusion

This set of studies offered insight into different types of convergence studies and problems that can arise from improper restraints and lack of convergence. While it is essential to simplify a model compared to reality, oversimplification can lead to unrealistic and problematic results in the form of stress and displacement singularities. In this case, a flat plate with a constant cross- section, performing the FEA on 2-D shell elements resolved the singularity condition and allowed the results to converge.
