Depression Theme within “Ulysses”

Mohammad Alenezi

Morgan State University

Introduction

Theme tells the subject of a literary work.It connects all the parts of the story which brings events to life for the reader. Sara Letourneau explains what theme means in a reading and writing context, and she agrees with other writers that theme is the heart of a story. She further says that theme presents a fundamental idea or a moral lesson around which all the charter’s concerns and passions are rooted, and it makes a good story a compelling one. Writing the good theme, and she empowers character (diymga.com). It expresses the intended lesson and message of the characters where they become interrelated.Theme finally reveals the conclusion which effectively conveys the moral of the story. Depressive themes are meant to invoke sadness, excessive loneliness, and intense confusion to reveal Ulysses’ problematic way of coping with his current life situation as established throughout “Ulysses” by Alfred Tennyson.

Extreme sadness portrays terrible hopelessness and unbearable pain to showcase king Ulysses’ incapability of handling tough situations logically. For example, terrible hopelessness induces risky behavior putting king Ulysses’ life in danger. When terrible hopelessness makes the mind insecure, positive thinking gets badly affected and this happens with Ulysses. Hopelessness creates troubling behavior, and Ulysses switches on pessimistic thinking. King Ulysses’ hopelessness increases his desperation, and this grows dangerously in him. Ulysses summarizes, “It little profits that an idle king/By this still heath, among these barren crags/Match’d with an aged wife, I mete and” (Tennyson, 1842, Lines 1-3). King Ulysses refers here to his thoughts about how it is useless for a king or a ruler to just create rules sitting idle. Ulysses does not believe in the typical judging occupation where a king has no works beside to set rules and regulations for his subjects as he pleases. He finds it to be a mere waste of time with no beneficial element. He prefers not to glorify his position through empty titles, rather via taking pride to lead a competent group of subjects by leadership qualities, and strategies. Ulysses questions, “Thro’ scudding drifts the rainy Hyades/Vext the dim sea: I am become a name/For always roaming with a hungry heart” (Tennyson Lines 10-12).Ulysses is communicating that he loves to travel to different places. He has an unquenchable thirst to visit different venues and to different foods and flavors and for this travelling manner of his, and he has become a household name and everywhere where he has left a mark of his traveling, the inhabitants know his name. The emptiness in his life is represented best by his hungry heart, and he seeks to fill this void with satisfaction he achieved in travelling. Leonee Ormond believes, “With its complex verse structures and use of language, Tennyson’s poetry was found to be difficult to translate with any kind of accuracy” (P. 3). What Ormond finds difficult is to translate the original text of Tennyson’s poetry. Tennyson’s poetry text is original and Ormond finds it difficult to translate. Tennyson’s poetry text is original, so Ormond finds it difficult to translate. Tennyson’s poetry text is original, yet it is difficult to translate. Ormond’s difficulty is translation of Tennyson’s poetry text which is original. Ormond has a difficulty, and it is translation of Tennyson’s poetry because it is original. The difficulty that Ormond has is translation of Tennyson’s original poetry text.

In addition, unbearable pain shatters mighty strength leading Ulysses to a path of negativity.Unbearable pain enhances disturbances, and this makes the mind sick. This causes uncertainty from within as it leads to restlessness.King Ulysses worries for his bravery and wisdom which once make him famous and honorable. He struggles with the thought of very limited options, and he appears to be very nervous and negative due to restricted choice. Ulysses reasons, “Unequal law unto a savage race/That hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know not me” (Tennyson Lines 4-5). Ulysses says it is useless to create rules and regulations sitting idle for a king and he rejects the traditional role of a ruler. He finds it boring of a job to create laws of punishments and rewards for subject that do not even know him. These subjects are useless as well who knows only to eat and sleep. Thus overall the work position does not suit him.Ulysses adds, “Much have I seen and know; cities of men/And manners, climates, councils, governments/Myself not least, bit honour’d of them all/And drunk delight of battle with my peers/For on the ringing plains of windy Troy/I am a part of all that I have met” (Tennyson Lines 13-18). Ulysses exclaims how he has been to different places and had different foods. People of all places have welcomed him with respect and dignity. He also exclaims his joys on travelling to the city of Troy, where the Trojan war.Harold Bloom observes, “what the most sympathetic reading can still find wanting in the best of Tennyson is a power of imagination shown forth uncompromisingly” (P. Xii). Bloom makes the claim that even most sensitive stories fade in comparison to Tennyson’s writings. Tennyson’s writing is compact and complete, and even the best of the sympathetic writings look inferior. The best of the sympathetic writings look inferior because Tennyson’s writing which is compact and complete. Tennyson’s writing, which is compact and complete makes even the best of the sympathetic writings to look inferior. Being compact and complete, Tennyson’s work makes even the best of the sympathetic writings look inferior. What makes even the best of the sympathetic works to look inferior is that Tennyson’s work is compact and complete. The completeness and compactness of Tennyson’s work makes even the best of sympathetic works to look inferior.

Excessive aloneness includes hurtful anger and unpleasant exile making Ulysses weaker. For instance, hurtful anger suppresses good judgment affecting king Ulysses’ decision making skills.Hurtful anger causes hate when it gets mixed with sadness. Until anger affects judgement negatively, this does not lead to a harsh decision.Hurtful anger and despondence dangerous imbalance Ulysses’ mental state. He faces the tyranny of conflicting thoughts because they cause anger. Ulysses shows, “I cannot rest from travel: I will drink/Life to less: All time I have enjoy’d” (Tennyson Lines 6-7). Ulysses says how he has enjoyed his travelling. He says he rather just travel whole life. He considers his love for travelling for than his love for his own life, and all his travelling has been a total enjoyment to him, and he does not regret none of it. Ulysses Believes, “How dull it is to pause, to make an and/To rust unburnish’d not to shine use/As tho’ to breathe were life/Life piled on life/Were all too little, and of one to me” (Tennyson Lines 22-25). Ulysses does not believe in a life of just breathing. For him it is more than that. He considers life an adventure and should be in constant motion. He is all set to enjoy this adventurous life.Laurence W. Mazzeno States, “While acknowledging that many of Tennyson’s poems are open multiple reading, culler demonstrates that quite a few lend themselves to interpretations of the artist’s role in society” (P. 139). He claims that even though many or most of his poems are universal and can be attributed to the reader’s own sense and perspective, and many poems reflect the sensation exclusive to the poet’s perspective. There is thus the need for cultural knowledge to appreciate these poems. These poems need to be appreciated and that will happen through the use of cultural knowledge. Cultural knowledge is needed for these poems can be appreciated. For these poems to be appreciated there is a need for cultural knowledge. These poems need to be enjoyed and that calls for cultural knowledge. These poems are appreciated through the use of cultural knowledge. These poems are appreciated once there is cultural knowledge.

In addition, unpleasant exile tortures wisdom bending Ulysses’ trust to lose faith.Unpleasant exile eats up the peace of mind as it leads to impatience. This causes a feeling of unworthiness which makes the mind agitated.Ulysses’ successful strong past makes him
