This research question aims at discussing various methods that can be used to curb recidivism in women offender’s who have substance abuse issues. It is an area of research that has a lot to gather and comprehend in a study. Some of the current programs used include prison entrepreneurship program (PEP), community bridges fact teams as well as 4 safer foundations. These programs have proved to help in solving the problem of recidivism in the society. I believe that there a better society can be created when recidivism is reduced.

Essay directions for this two-part essay (you’re analyzing two different documents- one from each chapter):

Write a well-developed and well-supported essay in which you analyze the importance of two of those primary sources (one from ch. 15 and one from ch. 16), and discuss the multiple ways those documents are important for the study of the United States from Reconstruction to the latter part of the 19th century (and why that might matter for the 20th century).

For each primary source, provide us with the historical context necessary to fully understanding that document- tell us the history behind that document (bring in knowledge you’ve gained from Schaller’s ch’s 15 and 16 and from your films).

For example, if writing about the sources about native peoples: tell us about the history of U.S. policy towards native peoples during the latter part of the 19th century- what was the relationship? How did native peoples fare as the English-speaking population was expanding West during the course of the 19th century? How did Indian peoples respond to the systematic expansion of Whites onto territories they had lived on for generations?

Then, tell us all about that document- who wrote it? When? To whom? For what purpose? What does it say? What are some assumptions behind it? Why is it historically significant? Discuss all of the ways this document is important for our understanding of American history during the second half of the 19th century.

For example, when analyzing Frederick Jackson Turner’s “Significance of the Frontier in American History,” what are some assumptions behind this grand statement? What are some consequences of it? How does it relate to Manifest Destiny? Be sure to bring in knowledge you’ve gained from our film “To Conquer or Redeem: Manifest Destiny.”

When analyzing Primary sources from our textbook that are photographs and/or political cartoons – provide deep historical context and analysis that goes beyond a mere summary and first impressions.

Be sure to provide historical context from our textbook and from our films on this topic- show us that you’re making connections to our readings and the films that you’re watching and taking notes on. Providing historical context is absolutely essential to this essay.

Length of this essay: about two well developed paragraphs with specific examples for each document. Total length of this essay: 4-5 well developed paragraphs (800-1,200 words).

Citing evidence: Because we are all reading the same documents from the same books, when citing a document, you can just give us the title of the document and then the page number in parenthesis. When bringing in a quote from Schaller, you can simply cite it as: (Schaller, p. 541), for example. B. Sees the transition from hunter-gatherers to active producers of food

A. Nearly all of the domesticates brought to Greece from Near East, not domesticated in Greece itself

B. Plants-Cereal grains like wheat and barley; legumes like vetch and lentils

C. Animals-sheep, goats, cattle, pigs. Dogs had been domesticated much earlier

D. Domestication creates changes in form of seeds and animal bones that can be identified

III. Settlements

A. People live year-round in same place, not moving around. Example of a major settlement is Sesklo.

B. Neolithic settlements fairly small, only for populations in hundreds. No cities.

C. Creation of permanent houses made of mud-brick on stone socles with timber-framed roofs covered with thatch. These have simple plans, usually 1-3 rooms, with door in the long side of house. Nothing like a palace.

(and so on, through stone tools, weaving, burial practices, etc.)

  • Reading selection from Descartes’ Discourse on the Method (Part IV). Descartes begins with a proof of one basic conclusion and ends with a proof of something much grander. Remember to focus on the surprise and point of realization, not the details of the philosophical argument. Read Part IV of the Discourse on the Method located at http://www.earlymoderntexts.com/assets/pdfs/descartes1637.pdf (then scroll down to Part 4, pp. 14-18). This is only four or five (4 or 5) pages of the larger work.
  • Reading selection of Swift’s A Modest Proposal. It is essential to recognize the genre of this work, as discussed in our class text, which you should consult and cite. Swift promotes a radical solution, but subtle options are mentioned. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization.   • Two (2) reading selections from Voltaire’s Candide. Consider how these readings start and end in terms of the action and the beliefs. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. These selections can be found on pp. 840-841 in the textbook. In addition, consult the class text at pp. 824-825.

For the reading selection you choose:

  1. Clearly state in your own words the “surprise ending” in the reading you selected. Clearly identify the point in the reading when you realized that there were elements in the reading that surprised you. Not all of the surprises come at the end.
  2. Evaluate how successful the author was in convincing you to accept the validity of the “surprise ending” that was different from what you expected.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA Style format.
