Classmate post.

Nursing is one of the fastest growing professions and will continue to be so for many years due to the population of the baby boomers retiring from the workforce in the next decade. Nursing is largely dominated by women, but it has not been historically so, until Florence Nightingale brought female soldiers to the Crimean war (Mill & Fremson, 2018). Unfortunately, just like most professions, racial and sexual inequality exists in the nursing profession. I will discuss the different forms of racial and sex inequality, how we see institutionalized inequality in the nursing profession, and the equal treatment of all nurses and nursing assistants.

There are different forms of racial and sex inequality that exist. According to Newman (2017), a person’s race, such as African Americans and Latinos, might have them question the reliability and trustfulness of the police. Special education is given to young African American males in how to interact with the police and report more harassment than Caucasians males (Newman, 2017). Racial inequality occurs when a minority group tries to socialize in a school, community, or work place that is primarily another racial group. Sexual inequality can also occur when a female wants to enter a primarily male dominated field, such as engineering or the law profession (Newman, 2017). A female has to work harder and longer to prove their abilities, while often receiving lower pay than their male counterparts (Newman, 2017).

Some of the ways that we see institutionalized inequality within the nursing profession is that males that chose nursing as their chosen profession are often viewed as less masculine, as shown in the movie, Meet the Parents, where the man that was a nurse was made fun of by the parent (Newman, 2017). Nursing can also be seen as a “woman job” since most of the nurses traditionally in America has been nurses (Newman, 2017). In my practice, there are many times when female and male patients specifically request to not have a male nurse because they feel uncomfortable.

According to Price-Glynn & Rakovski (2012), men entering occupations such as nursing that is female-dominated, will often advance quicker and receive higher salaries and positions of authority than their female counterparts. This is also a form of sexual inequality that is seen as well in the nursing profession. Unfortunately, nursing assistants that are African American and Latino are discriminated against in the nursing profession, while this was not seen as often with Caucasian nursing assistants (Price-Glynn & Rakovski, 2012). The articles “Who Rides the Glass Elevator?” and “Forget about the Stigma”, speak about the stigmas and inequalities in the nursing profession towards nurses and nursing assistants (Miller & Fremson, 2018).

Despite these inequalities in nursing, there are more men entering the nursing profession than ever before. According to Miller & Fremson (2018), some of the reasons that men find the nursing profession appealing for a career is the vast job opportunities, great pay and benefits, along with working twelve hour shifts that allow for more days off in the week to spend with family and pursuing social interests and activities. Interestingly, men are entering the nursing profession for many of the same reasons that women have done so. In my practice, we have several male nurses and they are just as capable and caring as the female nurses. We also have a few male aides that are extremely good at their jobs and they get recommended for Awards and recognition as often as the female nurses. In some cases, men patients find it more comfortable to have male nurses and I have found that some older women patients especially prefer the male nurses and light up when they come in the patient’s room.

In conclusion, there will probably always be racial and sexual inequalities in the workplace, since stereotypes and stigmas are hard to overcome. Fortunately, in the nursing profession, these stigmas and stereotypes barriers are starting to be broken down so that more men, as well as, African American and Latinos are entering the nursing profession. Men are starting to seek nursing positions of nurse anesthetists and nurse practitioners, as well as, nursing manager and supervisorial positions. Hopefully, one day an employee will be hired and promoted based on their skill and expertise, rather then there ethnicity or sexual orientation.

Application of Theory

Application of Theory Paper

Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to synthesize one strategy for the application of a specific nursing theory to resolving a problem or issue of nursing practice in nursing leadership, nursing education, nursing informatics, or health policy.

Course Outcomes

Through this assignment, a student will demonstrate the ability to:

(CO#1) Analyze theories from nursing and relevant fields with respect to their components, relationships among the components, logic of the propositions, comprehensiveness, and utility to advanced nursing. (PO1)

(CO#3) Communicate the analysis of and proposed strategies for the use of a theory in nursing practice. (PO3, 7, 10)

(CO#4) Demonstrate logical and creative thinking in the analysis and application of a theory to nursing practice. (PO4, 7)

Requirements:

Description of the Assignment:

Content

  1. Introduction to the paper includes a few general statements on the idea of nursing theory being applied to solve problems/issues in nursing practice, regardless of the specialty area of practice. For example, why would one pick a nursing theory to solve a practice problem? Would a grand, middle-range, or practice theory be best? Does the writer have any experience in using nursing theory this way? In addition, a brief one-paragraph summary of a specific nursing theory and information on the sections of the paper are provided. The selected nursing theory can be a grand theory, a middle-range theory, or a practice theory.
  2. Description of the problem/issue for which strategies will be developed. The problem to be resolved must be in nursing leadership, nursing education, nursing informatics, or health policy. Scholarly evidence (in the form of a literature review) supporting the issue is included. The problem/issue could be local to one’s specific practice setting. For example, the setting might be a nursing unit, a nursing-education program, an informatics department, or a health-policy unit of a consulting firm. The problem/issue needs to be something that a nursing theory can impact, whether it solves the actual problem/issue or enables people affected by the problem/issue to deal with it. It is best if the problem/issue is from real life – something the writer of the paper has dealt with or is currently engaged in.Some examples (these are fictitious examples)
    1. A nursing unit has experienced rapid turnover of professional staff, including several nurse managers. A new nurse manager from outside of the nursing unit is appointed.
    2. Informatics nurse specialists face a lot of resistance from all healthcare professionals to implementation of a computer-based order entry program. The implementation date will not be changed.
    3. A nurse educator is assigned to take over a large class of undergraduate nursing students, with a mix of young adults and adults returning for a second degree. The subject is difficult, students have not been doing well, and frustration and tempers are impeding group work.
    4. A health-policy nurse specialist works for a consulting firm that lobbies on behalf of many healthcare professions. Within the specialist’s work unit, there is much debate over the pros and cons of various policies being proposed for attention in the coming year.
  3. Applying concepts and principles from the selected theory, one strategy for resolving the identified issue is described in depthDetails on how the theory would be applied are included (consider: who, what, when, where, and how). Rationales for the strategy as well as evidence from scholarly literature are included. One ethical and/or legal aspect of the strategy is discussed. Expected outcome(s) from implementing the strategy are proposed.
  4. Concluding statements include new knowledge about applying nursing theory gained by writing the paper

Format and Special Instructions

Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge.

Using the Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum

Have you ever gone online to search for a journal article on a specific topic? It is amazing to see the large number of journals that are available in the health care field. When you view the library in its entirety, you are viewing untapped data. Until you actually research for your particular topic, there is little structure. Once you have narrowed it down, you have information and once you apply the information, you have knowledge. Eventually, after thoughtful research and diligent practice, you reach the level of wisdom—knowledge applied in meaningful ways.

Are there areas in your practice that you believe should be more fully explored? The central aims of nursing informatics are to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. This continuum represents the overarching structure of nursing informatics. In this Assignment, you develop a research question relevant to your practice area and relate how you would work through the progression from data to information, knowledge, and wisdom.

To prepare:

  • Review the information in Figure 6–2 in Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge.
  • Develop a clinical question related to your area of practice that you would like to explore.
  • Consider what you currently know about this topic. What additional information would you need to answer the question?
  • Using the continuum of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom, determine how you would go about researching your question.
    • Explore the available databases in the Walden Library. Identify which of these databases you would use to find the information or data you need.
    • Once you have identified useful databases, how would you go about finding the most relevant articles and information?
    • Consider how you would extract the relevant information from the articles.
    • How would you take the information and organize it in a way that was useful? How could you take the step from simply having useful knowledge to gaining wisdom?

BY DAY 7 OF WEEK 4

Write a 4-page paper that addresses the following: MUST BE APA FORMAT

  • Summarize the question you developed, and then relate how you would work through the four steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum. Be specific.
    • Identify the databases and search words you would use.
    • Relate how you would take the information gleaned and turn it into useable knowledge.
  • Can informatics be used to gain wisdom? Describe how you would progress from simply having useful knowledge to the wisdom to make decisions about the information you have found during your database search.

Your paper must also include a title page, an introduction, a summary, and a reference page ( YOU CAN ONLY USE THE REFERENCES LISTED BELOW).

State Board of Nursing

75 word response to DQ apa format one svholarly source

(levi)

When comparing the State Board of Nursing with the role of professional organization there are some differences while there are also similarities between the two. Starting with the State Board of Nursing provide many different roles for the nursing profession. One role they provide is education; they provide nurses with updates information on the latest news, research, and resources in nursing. By providing this opportunity this allows nursing to expand their knowledge and help further expand their skills within their current roles or their future goals. The Board also helps regulate nursing practice by collaborating with professional organizations by providing the evidence-based best practices to nursing ( Glazer & Gormley, 2012). The State Board is also responsible for granting permission to practice within the state by verifying that the nurse graduated from the approved pre licensure nursing school and that they have successfully completed the NCLEX (Marcentile, 2016). Lastly the Board is the enforcer when disciplinary action is required, whenever a violation occurs, they are responsible for following up with the violation and then determining where the violation lands in the disciplinary action tree. The board of nursing is the governing body over nursing and they help keep nursing on the right track and have nursing kept accountable for their action. Thus protecting the public and fellow nurses alike from malpractice and providing education to nurses so that they can provide the highest level of care. Compared to the State Board of Nursing, professional nursing organizations are not able to provide disciplinary action to nurses for misconduct. They do however provide similar opportunities and credentialing to nursing. For example, the American Nurses Association (ANA) represents 3.6 million registered nurses and they have a large influence within the nursing community. The ANA provides up to date informative on their website and also provide opportunities to nurse to further their education and knowledge (Rugs & Powell-Cope, 2015). The ANA provide credentialing for nurses who want to expand their current role, for example the ANA has a Nurse Executive certification and Nurse Executive Advanced certification which is something that I would be interesting in doing after completing my master’s degree. Overall both the State and the ANA have guidelines and measures set in place to help provide protection for patients and nurse alike. The State is the governing body for all legal matters while the ANA helps push for healthcare change and further nursing knowledge.
