Briefly describe your background with the research topic you selected

Research Review

Reflection is a purposeful activity in which you analyze experiences, or your own practice/skills/responses, in order to learn and improve. Now that you have written a complete draft and received feedback, please answer the following questions in a 2-3-page (double-spaced) reflection:

  • Briefly describe your background with the research topic you selected.
  • Do you feel your experience could lead to research bias? Why or why not?
  • Where do you feel your paper incorporates research the best?
  • Based on your feedback, what are the specific areas of your paper you plan to revise? How?
  • What specific areas of your paper could you strengthen by incorporating a bit more research?
  • What challenges did you encounter incorporating research and/or adding citations?
  • What was the most important aspect you learned in doing this assignment? Why?
  • If you were in a high-stakes professional setting, how would you go about finding out for sure whether your final draft is up to snuff?
  • What questions do you still have about the research process?
  • Your completed assignment should use APA style formatting.

The nursing shortage

The nursing shortage is a real problem that is going to grow in years to come. Its impact is felt in the nursing profession as well as the patient population. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Projections the nursing profession will surpass all others in the area of job growth between the years 2014-2014 (Haryanto, 2019). This shortage makes it a dangerous workplace for both workers and patients. Nurses are being asked to take on more tasks, and larger patient ratios due to short staffing. This causes nurses to become overworked and dissatisfied with their employment. With nurses having too many patients or higher ratios, more deaths in surgical patients was noted due to inadequate care by nursing staff(Cherry & Jacob, 2014). Nursing shortage makes an impact on medical errors, nursing judgements, and results in poor patient outcomes. More and more nurses are becoming overworked and dissatisfied with their career. Johnson and Johnson put forth a 30 million dollar initiate to try and improve the way people see nurses, as a way to recruit more nurses to the career. It failed to do so(Cherry & Jacob, 2014). One reason for the nursing shortage is the shortage of nurses to teach. In 2012 nursing schools in the United States had to turn away 80,000 students due to lack of faculty to teach, in 2017 56,000 were turned down(Haryanto, 2019). Without the nursing educators to teach, the demand will never be reached.

One way the nursing profession is working through a resolution to the problem is through the American Nurses Association. They are advocating through congress to allocate more funds to the nursing schools to help increase access to students for nursing degrees (Haryanto, 2019). This will help a lot of students gain access to becoming a nurse, but without the proper number of teachers is this going to be enough? We need to come up with a strategy to educate new nurses fast. Unfortunately, the growing problem is just that, growing. It is expected that one third of nurses will be retiring in about 10-15 years(Haryanto, 2019). It is up to our generation of nurses to get involved to help find a solution to a growing problem.

The Ph.D. in nursing

The Ph.D. in nursing, is research- and science-oriented. It prepares graduates to develop new, evidence-based knowledge for the nursing profession. Ph.D. graduates can lead research teams and design and implement studies that address disease trajectories and care systems (American Sentinel University, 2014). The DNP is focused on advancing an understanding of nursing practice. The curriculum emphasizes both clinical and leadership skills. Graduates will be poised to translate nursing research into evidence-based standards of care – allowing them to lead interdisciplinary care teams, improve care systems, and evaluate outcomes among specific patient populations (Loomis & Cohen, 2007).

The DNP is a practice doctorate that places greater emphasis on direct clinical practice. The curriculum focuses on organizational management, systems leadership, clinical-practice administration, quality improvement and program evaluation, in addition to other specialty areas, and less on statistics and research methodology. Students generally complete an evidence-based “final DNP project” and an intensive practice immersion experience.

On the other hand, a DNS or PhD is more research-intensive and takes a scholarly approach to nursing. The curriculum for these degrees focuses on scientific inquiry and provides the evidence for nursing practice, as well as improving general nursing knowledge. If I choose to pursue, I would go for DNP because nurses frequently work alongside other health professionals with practice doctorates – physicians, pharmacists, physical therapists and more. The DNP provides nurses with a clinical option for nursing education that is more commensurate to the education of these disciplines. Likewise, research clearly draws a distinct connection between higher levels of nursing education and improved patient outcomes.

Professional nursing organizations

Please write a Paragraph answering to this discussion below with your opinion. Please include citations and references in case of another source.

Professional nursing organizations are involved in networking and in the legislative process of nursing. Professional nursing organizations such as the state boards of registered nursing and the American Nurses Association continue to benefit nurses in the profession by supporting continuing education opportunities and reduced rates and access to nursing seminars. These organizations always allow nurses to attend seminars that will enhance their practice in their specialty areas also to network with other professionals that can enhance their career even further. By networking with other professionals in a seminar environment it allows one to be exposed to new information, new ideas, new products, different and innovative techniques. Through networking one can learn new opportunities for higher positions in employment that they may not hear of otherwise. One can advance their career by networking at a professional nursing organization seminar. (Grand Canyon University, 2011)

Nursing is always subject to continual changes in legislation, due to the role that professional nursing organizations have in these legislation , nurses as individuals can benefit. Professional nursing organizations have founded a relationship with legislative decision makers due to the the expertise that nurses are viewed to have as professionals. As more nurses are encouraged to join and be involved in professional organizations, the more one can learn about the specific legislation that affects their areas in the hospital. (GCU , 2011)

Nurses are required to keep up with the always evolving information including that of the legislative decisions being made. The ANA gives nurses and those thinking about becoming nurses a forum in which to investigate nursing and learn more about being a nurse. I think that it is important for these organizations to designate a place where nurses can find information on new jobs, seminars and quality information about the standards of nursing. These platforms allow us to enhance our nursing careers as professionals. (Friberg and Creasia, 2016)

First, refer to the “How a Bill Becomes a Law” media.

http://lc.gcumedia.com/zwebassets/courseMaterialPages/nrs440v_how-a-bill-becomes-a-law-v2.1.php/.

Then, view the “Bill to Law Process” to watch the scenario.

After viewing the scenario, refer to the “Legislative Assignment.” You will need to save the document first in order to use it.

Examine a patient centered protocol/policy at the facility where you practice that incorporates evidence-based practice and possibly a theoretical framework (theory of nursing).

Examine a patient centered protocol/policy at the facility where you practice that incorporates
evidence-based practice and possibly a theoretical framework (theory of nursing).
* If the patient-centered protocol/policy doesn’t formally mention/include a theoretical
framework (nursing theory), then make recommendations for which theoretical framework
(nursing theory) would be appropriate to guide the policy for nursing practice. Indicate why
you believe that the theory you selected could improve the policy and why. Lastly, re-write
the policy with theory included and cited with references.
* This is an assignment that totals three pages. Use the first page to copy (with citation and
proper reference) the policy/protocol as noted in the facility. The second page are your
thoughts and example of how to improve this policy/protocol based on incorporating theory
into it. The third page is a reference list.
* NOTE: A policy/protocol generally outlines the care that will be provided to patients in a
designated area of practice. Theories do not describe how a procedure is performed, but
offer foundational knowledge to understand underlying dynamics occurring within
patients and/or the setting.
