Describe the organization of the human body at increasingly complex levels

Select a journal article on the subject of supplements and write a 500–700-word review of the article.  The media (newspapers, magazine articles, television news programs, and Web-based information sources) provide us with much of what we know about human biology. After taking a course on human biology, you might be interested in taking advantage of these resources for additional learning. Journal articles on a special topic are particularly informative, because they often go into depth and are a good source of current information, which you can use to continue learning or reviewing biology as a lifelong practice. Journal articles are a good source of information about current advances in a particular area of human biology, and they also highlight possible future advances in the treatment of certain conditions. Show Less Yet, with so much information available in the media, it is important to understand how to evaluate the credibility of these sources. We have all seen questionable statistics presented in the media, or information that appeared to be biased, misleading, or even inaccurate. How can we be sure we are taking in information that is objective, thorough, and accurate? Although we may not be experts, we can do our best to be informed and critical evaluators of information.  By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

•Competency 1: Describe the organization of the human body at increasingly complex levels. ◦Discuss how supplements affect cells and body systems.  •Competency 5: Evaluate the objectivity and legitimacy of biology information found in articles and online. ◦Compare article with multiple sources of information about the same concepts. ◦Incorporate an analysis of sources into an article review. ◦Compare the main points presented about supplements, including specific areas of research and the findings.

•Competency 6: Apply biological concepts to factors related to human health. ◦Examine the role of supplements in athletics and discuss why supplements are currently unregulated. ◦Interpret whether or not supplements should undergo more stringent testing.

•Competency 7: Communicate effectively in a variety of formats. ◦Write coherently to support a central idea in appropriate format with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics, including correct APA format and citations.

You are encouraged, but not required, to use Senchina’s 2013 article “Athletics and Herbal Supplements,”

National Institute on Drug Abuse

Each thread must be 250 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. Important Concepts from Chapter 13:

  • Section 13.3: How Neurons Communicate The region where an axon terminal sends chemical signals to a neuron, a muscle fiber, or a gland cell is a chemical synapse. Axon terminals have synaptic vesicles filled with neurotransmitter, a signaling molecule that relays messages between cells at a synapse. The plasma membrane of a postsynaptic cell has receptor proteins that reversibly bind neurotransmitter. How a receiving cell responds depends on the type and amount of the neurotransmitter, the kinds of receptors, and other factors. Certain drugs can block reuptake of neurotransmitters.
  • Section 13.13: The Brain on Mind Altering Drugs Drugs such as morphine and heroin mimic a neurotransmitter’s effect on a postsynaptic cell; they bind to receptors for endorphins (natural pain relievers), and elicit pain relief and feelings of well-being. Caffeine binds and inactivates receptors for adenosine, a neurotransmitter that causes drowsiness. Alcohol encourages drowsiness by releasing adenosine. Other drugs interfere with reuptake of neurotransmitter from the synaptic cleft. For example, cocaine slows reuptake of several neurotransmitters, including dopamine.

Assignment:

1. Visit the NIH National Institute on Drug Abuse and read the article Drugs, Brains and Behavior: The Science of Drug Addiction.

2. Go to Indiana University and read an article on Addictive Behaviors.

Prompt : – Using the sources provided, briefly describe one factor that can increase the risk of drug addiction, and one protective factor that can reduce the risk of drug addiction. – Why do you think Americans use so many legal drugs (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, and OTC drugs)?

Replies: Reply to 2 classmates, describing an additional risk factor and protective factor. Note: your factors should differ from the post to which you are replying and also those used in your other reply.

Digestive disorders are nothing new. As long as humans have consumed food, there have been problems with digestion. Now think about how human nutrition has changed over time and across geographical locations. Identify a digestive disorder that is closely linked to a particular time or place. For example, a lower incidence of colorectal cancer has been documented in parts of the world where the local diet consists primarily of fresh fruits and vegetables with low consumption of cooked red meat. (Note: colorectal cancer is an example—please do not use this disorder in your discussion) Discuss the causes and symptoms of your chosen disorder and possible treatment options. Make sure to include information on the role of diet in mitigating or treating symptoms of the disorder. Please cite at least two sources in your response.
