Planning a “Problem-Solution” Essay

Students are often asked to write essays that address a particular problem. Based on a series of

questions, the Dewey Sequence was developed by educator John Dewey as a reflective method

for solving problems. The idea is to work through the list of questions and use the answers you

come up with as the basis for organizing and developing the ideas for your essay.

Step One: Define the Problem

1. What is the specific problem that you or your colleagues are concerned about?

2. In stating this problem, what terms, concepts, or ideas need to be defined?

Step Two: Analyze the Problem

1. What is the history of the problem?

2. What are the causes of the problem?

3. What are the symptoms of the problem?

4. What methods (approaches, laws, policies, etc.) exist for dealing with the problem?

5. What are the limitations of these methods?

Step Three: Determine Criteria for an Optimal Solution

1. What are the guidelines for a workable solution? Sample criteria may include cost,

feasibility, enforcement, etc.

Step Four: Propose Solutions

1. After you have analyzed the problem and suggested criteria for a solution, try to

envision possible solutions in tentative, hypothetical terms. You might begin by

suggesting a variety of possible solutions without evaluating them.

Step Five: Evaluate Proposed Solution(s)

1. After you have compiled a list of possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s)

in light of the criteria that the group developed in step three.

2. What are the disadvantages or downsides to the solution? Do the disadvantages

outweigh the advantages?

3. Does the solution conform to the criteria you formulated in Step Three? (You may need

to modify the criteria).

Step Six: Select a Solution

1. Weigh the merits and deficiencies of your top one or two solutions.

2. What would be the long-term and short-term effects of this solution if it were adopted?

Step Seven: Suggest Strategies to Implement the Solution

1. How can you get public support and approval (buy-in) for the proposed solution?

2. What specific steps are necessary to implement the solution? What’s the first step?

3. How can the group evaluate the success of its problem-solving efforts?

This is my nursing situation. I would like to use Dorothea Orem theory.

Early in my nursing practice I experienced a situation that exemplifies the complexity nurses deal with in the process of caring for patients. As a newly hired nurse in a hospice care facility I came across patients that were at the final stages of life as a result of chronic illness or old age. One of these patients was an elderly man who I will call Mr. M. approximately 74 years of age diagnosed with dementia in addition to end stage renal disease. This patient was frequently confused and forgetful but had large chunks of time where he was more lucid and could understand what was happening in terms of his health.

Respect for Human Dignity

WCU assignment icon

Reviewing Appendix B in Butts, choose two of the Nine Tenets of the Code of Ethics for Nurses and describe how you will personally apply each tenet in the practice setting with your patients. Describe in detail the purpose of the tenet and provide examples of the tenet applied in practice. Explain why it is important to uphold the tenet in maximizing the quality of patient care, and identify how it enhances your own practice as a nurse.

Your paper should be 1-2 pages.

Include a title page and a reference page to cite your text. Adhere to APA formatting throughout, and cite any outside sources you may use.

*Tenets Chosen:

1.1 Respect for Human Dignity

A fundamental principle that underlies all nursing practice is respect for the inherent dignity, worth, unique attributes, and human rights of all individuals. The need for and right to health care is universal, transcending all individual differences. Nurses consider the needs and respect the values of each person in every professional relationship and setting; they provide leadership in the development and implementation of changes in public and health policies that support this duty.

Images

 1.2 Relationships with Patients

Nurses establish relationships of trust and provide nursing services according to need, setting aside any bias or prejudice. Factors such as culture, value systems, religious or spiritual beliefs, lifestyle, social support system, sexual orientation or gender expression, and primary language are to be considered when planning individual, family and population-centered care. Such considerations must promote health and wellness, address problems, and respect patients’ or clients’ decisions. Respect for patient decisions does not require that the nurse agree with or support all patient choices. When patient choices are risky or self-destructive, nurses have an obligation to address the behavior and to offer opportunities and resources to modify the behavior or to eradicate the risk.
