1. In this case history, a 49 year-old man handled a parakeet with a respiratory illness on February 7. On March 9, he experienced intense pain in his legs, followed by severe chills and headaches. On March 16, he had chest pains, cough, and diarrhea, and his temperature was 40°C. Appropriate antibiotics were administered on March 17, and his fever subsided within 12 hours. He continued taking antibiotics for 14 days. Identify each period in the pattern of disease that he experienced. Note: The disease is psittacosis. Can you find the etiology?
2. Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare is prevalent in AIDS patients. In an effort to determine the source of this infection, hospital water systems were sampled. The water contained chlorine. What is the usual method of transmission for Mycobacterium? What is the probable source of infection in hospitals? How can such nosocomial infections be prevented?
Percentage of samples with M. avium
Hot water Cold water
February 88% February 22%
June 50% June 11%
3. Twenty-one percent of the patients in a large hospital acquired Clostridium difficile diarrhea and colitis during their hospital stay. Epidemiological studies provided the following information. What is the most likely mode of transmission of this bacterium in hospitals? How can transmission be prevented?
Rate of infection for patients:
Single room 7%
Double room 17%

To prevent a lethal epidemic in the United states all those living in the U.S. must receive the vaccine.

After reading the scenario described below, imagine that you are an expert in viruses, the immune system, and epidemics. As an expert you are asked to explain in language everyone can understand the scientific basis supporting one of the two positions below. Your essay should be a minimum of two pages, double-spaced.
A new strain of avian (bird) virus has popped up in China and has health officials at the World Health Organization are worried. They fear it may jump across species and infect humans, causing a pandemic. The virus is 100% lethal in birds, killing them within 24 to 48 hours. A human vaccine against the avian virus has been successfully manufactured in the U.S. and there is enough to inoculate the entire U.S. population. You are a scientist at the Center for Disease Control and have been called before Congress where they are debating whether to make immunizations against this avian flu legally mandatory for all US citizens.

Ignoring the constitutionality of such a law, choose one of the following positions and, in writing, present a scientifically persuasive case for why Congress should adopt your position. If you choose position 2, then, in addition to making a persuasive argument for why this is the case, please state what the alternative strategy should be.

Position 1: To prevent a lethal epidemic in the United states all those living in the U.S. must receive the vaccine.

Position 2: One can protect the entire U.S. population against an epidemic without having to vaccinate everyone.

M4A2: Project 1
Background

You are the science reporter for your local newspaper. Your editor asks you to write an article on a major topic within the general field of microbiology. He stipulates that in this article you need to include the following three things:

  1. An historical timeline for the major scientific discoveries that has led to our current understanding
    of the topic.
  2. A summary of our current understanding of the topic.
  3. A projection of where the next major advance or breakthrough in your topic will come from.

Description
For project 1 you will do your background research. Specifically, you will choose a suitable topic, identify appropriate resources, and generate a brief outline of the article which you will write for Project 2. Your topic must fall under the following subheadings:

  1. Microbiology and human health
  2. Microbiology and the environment
  3. Microbiology and agriculture
  4. Microbiology and industry

Procedure

  1. Consult your textbook to choose a topic under one of the four subheadings listed above. For
example, from the area Microbiology and industry, you might examine the use of organisms by the alcoholic beverage industry. More specifically, are you interested in wine and the grapes that produce it? You could investigate the actions of a fungus called “noble rot” or the cultures involved in the fermentation of the grapes. [Need help choosing a topic?]
  2. Email your topic to your instructor for approval.
  3. Once your receive instructor approval, do some background research on your topic to get more
familiar with it. Using the Credo Reference and/or Britannica Online: Academic Edition databases, find 1-2 articles/encyclopedia entries on your topic that will help you complete your Project 2 article. You can access these databases from the Library’s Background Information page.
  4. Now that you have some grounding in your topic, find 5-6 peer-reviewed research articles that will
help you complete your Project 2 article using the Library’s OneSearch tool. OneSearch is found on the Library’s homepage. Watch the OneSearch Tips video for assistance getting started. [Note: In OneSearch you can limit your results to peer-reviewed journals.]
