The aim of this essay is to analyze the relationships between bio-technologies, gender, and bodies/embodiment.

Draw on readings to explain and apply concepts and examples that you find most significant or relevant to address how new biotechnologies (including biomedical technologies, as well as visualization or imaging technologies) are changing our ways of understanding and experiencing the body and sex-gender. Drawing selectively on readings and your examples, discuss questions such as:

· How biotechnologies are creating new types of knowledge, ways of relating to the body, and new ethical questions.

· The connections between technological control/transformation, and gendered social “scripts”—about bodies, identities, and gender norms.

· How do these biotechnologies entail new ways of visualizing, and knowing, manipulating the body and “life”?

· How do they create new ways of being human? Of being biological (Rose, p. 17)?

· What forms of social control over bodies are involved?

· How are social differences (gender, race) reproduced or altered through these technologies?

Concepts from which to select:

Embodiment (Shapiro p. 3); Body as process (Balsamo p. 3)

Techno-Embodiment (Balsamo, p. 5), Technology (Balsamo, p. 10)

Biomedical Technologies (Shapiro, p. 8, Rose)

Social scripts/Gender scripts (Shapiro, p. 9, p. 164)

Biopolitics/Subjectivity (Rose, 22-27)

Clinical gaze/technological gaze (Balsamo, p. 57, Sturken and Cartwright)

Lifestyle drugs (Mamo and Fosket, 925, 931-932, 936-937 and throughout)

Biomedicalization (Mamo and Fosket, 926-927, 931 and throughout)

Production of Bodies (927 and throughout)

New Natural/Re-writing the natural (933, 940 and throughout)

Your essay should be closely grounded in the readings. Be sure to give specific citations from the text as evidence to illustrate and support the points you make. Give page number and cite/quote relevant passages from the text.

Assignment – 800 words, doubled spaced, one inch margins, MLA format

Assignment – 800 words, doubled spaced, one inch margins, MLA format

This paper is not the typical autobiography—you are moving beyond just writing about your background to write a well structured and supported rhetorical reflection about how you perceive yourself and an event in your life.

The way I will figure if it is too personal or private is . . .

· Am I comfortable sharing this essay with my peers or my instructor?

· Do I have concerns about the manner in which people will respond?

· How well am I able to reflect on the experience or subject?

· Is reflecting on a particular memory too painful or even traumatic?

· How do I want my instructor and peers to respond to this paper?

What do I want them to focus on?

What do I want them to think after they read this memoir?

· How do I feel about being graded on certain memories and part of my life?

These are some things to consider in order to write a successful paper. . .

· Use your subject to grab my reader and pull them into my paper

· The paper will have a purpose a rationale as to why you chose a specific subject

· Have a definite chronological beginning and end to your memoir. Ask yourself ‘am I covering too much material?’

· Structure memories in a chronological manner, and do not necessarily indicate which one is less or more important

· In the conclusion, focus on the idea of “what this life experience has taught me” or “what I learned from this experience” in order to maintain some organization and flow

· Give as many specific details as possible, not only tell but show your audience what you are writing about

· Avoid choosing a subject that is too familiar to avoid a boring and unchallenging essay

· Proofread carefully and use the Writing Center if possible.

Assignment criteria:

· 800 words, doubled spaced, one inch margins, MLA format

· Has an interesting title that begins the argument

· Paper draws on memory and observations as sources of information and support

· Uses a fast write from class, or choose your own significant event to write about

· Uses a narrative style of developing ideas for this paper

· Balances details and reflection, and demonstrates how to engage in dialectal methods of thinking and writing

· Illustrates some poignant events or moments to give your reader a sense of what occurred and to demonstrate your abilities as a writer

· Sketches a scene, write a dialogue, and use sensory detail more than just tell statements

Response To Below:

This is Soma Sundar Kancharla, I am from Hyderabad called as city of pearls, my background as an undergraduate student is in pharmacy, when I was working in as a patient counselor, I had to deal with a lot of work involved with the Systems, that’s when I was very curious about computers and have decided to pursue my masters in computerscience. I am glad that I have chosen this stream for my career, right now I work as an Intern at Beckman colter working on the Salesforce system and integration with other applications as well. I love my job as my company is involved in life sciences which is related to my undergraduate course.

If I must introduce myself as outside of my professional life, I am always hyperactive, can’t stay in a closed wall for a day. My weekend job would be to explore local coffee shops and read a book. I am Buddhist practitioner and love to learn in-depth philosophy of life and be spiritual about life in-depth other activities that would keep me refreshed both from my spiritual life and my work life, I would like to go for hikes and connect more with nature and paint landscapes. I have enrolled myself in Spanish learning classes recently, it’s nice to learn a new language, as it keeps your brain active. I have a family of four, my parents are in India and my elder brother in Tanzania. This is all about me. Looking forward to the semester and learn more.

My long-term goals involve growing with a company where I can continue to learn, take on additional responsibilities, and contribute as much value as possible to the team. I see myself as a top-performing employee in a well-established organization. I also read about opportunities for progression in the job description. So if I can show that I hit my targets each month hopefully, I can progress in a year or so. I plan on enhancing my skills and continuing my involvement in related professional associations. Once I gain additional experience, I would like to have the opportunity to move on from a technical position to management. However, for now, I am excited about focusing on and applying my technical skills in my job.
