Mitochondria, Water, Molecules, and Cell Structures

“Mitochondria, Water, Molecules, and Cell Structures”

Note: Online students, please respond to one (1) of the following four (4) bulleted options.

  • The cell is comprised of very important components including the  mitochondria. Please view this video describing mitochondrial disease  which is found here.  Keep in mind that one of the symptoms of mitochondrial disease is  fatigue (weak and tired). Next discuss two (2) functions of mitochondria  and why you believe each of these functions is important. Then explain  two (2) ways that the inability of mitochondria to perform their proper  function can account for mitochondrial disease symptoms. Justify your  response.

  • Water is essential to life. Briefly discuss three (3) properties of  water then explain what is meant by the structure of water accounting  for each of its properties. Next choose one (1) of the properties of  water below and explain two (2) ways the property can be useful for  living systems.
    • Cohesion
    • Adhesion
    • High Specific Heat
    • Floating Ice
    • Good Solvent Properties
    • Dissociation of water molecules

  • Are you really what you eat? Many of us have heard the saying, “you  are what you eat”. Please view the quick crash course on carbohydrates,  lipids, and proteins here then  describe the processes needed to distinguish whether a biological  molecule is a carbohydrate, lipid, or protein. Next consider your daily  intake of foods this week and note the various carbohydrates, lipids,  and proteins you ingested. Discuss three (3) ways that your diet relates  to the molecules of life and their function. Justify your response.

  • Consider three (3) structures and functions of a cell then provide a  100 to 250 word explanation based on the following question: “How do  varied membrane composition and the structural features of molecules in  different cells contribute to membrane function?”

What do you believe to the best approach to minimizing the impact of human population growth has on our planet?

In 1979, China enacted a drastic policy that limited the number of children that families could have, despite the fact that China’s Total Fertility Rate had been declining rapidly for close to a decade. The effects of this policy are still felt today, particularly for those who were born shortly before or after the implementation of this policy. At the beginning of 2016, China relaxed this policy in the wake of outrage over brutal enforcement tactics, skewed gender ratios, and an increasingly growing elderly population. But, according to many experts, the damage has already been done.

Below you will find links to three articles, all written in late 2015, each discussing the impact the One Child Policy had on the culture and economy of the country. While the topic is the same, each emphasizes a different aspect of the policy.

New York Times: China Will Feel One-Child Policy’s Effects for Decades

The New York Times article provides a brief summary of some of the most important impacts on the country.

National Geographic: See How the One-Child Policy Changed China

The National Geographic article provides some context to the history of population growth in China, and has some really groovy interactive graphs to play with.

BBC: Five Numbers that Sum up China’s One-Child Policy

The BBC article expands on a number of population demographics we have focused our attentions on this week.

After reading all three, answer the following questions in your forum:

Is attempting to limit our reproductive rate really the best method of minimizing the impact that human population growth has on our planet, or is there a more sustainable way that won’t have such a drastic ecological and economic impact on the world?

Thoughtful and logical discussion on this question is encouraged! This is is your opportunity to use some of the vocabulary and concepts you have been studying this week!

What do you believe to the best approach to minimizing the impact of human population growth has on our planet?

The subject title of your post should quickly answer this question, and your post should expand on your idea(s).

To receive full credit, you must:
  • Write in complete sentences that are thoughtful, well written, and free of typos.
  • Address all parts of the forum topic.
  • Use vocabulary presented in the learning materials appropriately.
  • Create a discussion and reply to another discussion by 8:00 pm on Saturday of week 2 (7 days after week 2 module becomes available).

student reply #1:

Do I think china should have limited it to one child ? No. Do I believe that they have the right idea? Yes.  You see our population is expanding more and more and without a real way to curb the growth rate we are running out of land, resources, houses, and are destroying our atmosphere even more quickly.  Birth control can be used as a way to limit the population growth- making it free and accessible to all women would make  it so they would have no unwanted pregnancies. Now I am not pro or con abortion policies however, thinking on this topic I believe Abortion should be a legal and open resource for women to choose to use if an unwanted pregnancy occurs for faulty birth control or other reasons; by sending the child off to an orphanage doesn’t reduce the population effectively.  Maybe perhaps the government should say the average american family is limited to 3 children only. Because based on our economy most families struggled to feed two adults and two children without government aid as is.  I don’t think any of these will change much because our population already exceeds our capacity.

student reply#2:

  1. Is attempting to limit our reproductive rate really the best method of minimizing the impact that human population growth has on our planet, or is there a more sustainable way that won’t have such a drastic ecological and economic impact on the world?

I believe China’s one child policy was not the correct way to approach the increasing population. We have learned from this class that once a population increases it will eventually stabilize once it reaches the carry capacity of the area which these families live. People will limit the number of their children voluntarily if resources are not available for their children to grow up and have a great opportunity to survive and flourish. The one child policy will make it hard in the future to take care of the elderly population and increasing government spending to take care of them. It also encourages a small number to families killing their daughters (infanticide) to try and get a male child.

2.   What do you believe to the best approach to minimizing the impact of human population growth has on our planet?

I believe education is the key to helping the world not over populate. Each countries government has a responsibility to help the population understand the effects of overpopulation has on the environment, education and society as a whole. Family planning and sex education are important steps that could be taken and can be done in local areas as well as regionally.

Describe the social worker’s job activities and professional roles

In order to function as change agents, social workers interact with others in a wide variety of organizations. Visiting a social work agency allows students of social work to get a glimpse of the form that these interactions may take.

For this Assignment, visit a social service agency in your area and interview a MSW-level social worker there. The agency cannot be a private practice.

By Day 7 of this week, you identify your agency and the social worker you will collaborate with. Your Final Project, submitted in Week 6 of the course, should focus on the following.

Submission and Grading Information

To submit your Project, do the following:

Save your Project as a “.doc” file with the filename “WK3Proj+last name+first initial.doc”. For example, Sally Ride’s filename would be “WK3ProjRideS.doc”.

To upload your Project information, click on Projects on the course navigation menu, and then click the “Project – Week 3” link.

Looking Ahead: Your Final Project, submitted in Week 6 of the course will be a 4- to 5-page written account of your agency visit, reflection on the experience, and analysis of course topics as related to your experience. Make sure to support ideas with evidence from course resources and additional research.

The final project should:

Describe the agency. Including:

Services offered

Mission of the agency

Clientele or population served

Describe the social worker’s job activities and professional roles

Explain what brought the social worker to the field and their work history

Explain opportunities for advancement and what the social worker does for professional development

Describe the social worker’s overall job satisfaction and strategies they use for self-care

Analyze your experience. Specifically,

Discuss your thoughts and feelings related to the agency, clientele, and type of work.

Reflect on why you may have experienced these reactions to the agency, clientele, and type of work.

Explain which social work values and ethics were evident (or not evident) during the interview.

Explain how social and economic justice relates to the services provided or population served by this agency.

Explain how cultural competence was demonstrated (or not demonstrated) within the agency or by the social worker.

Please write 1-2 paragraphs describing how genetics and environment contributed to who you are today

In Chapter 3 we learned about how heredity (our genetics) and the environment (our family and how we were raised) can contribute to our personality and who we are today.

Think about your own genetic inheritance – what traits do you share with your parents? Genetics can include such things as eye and hair color, but many personality traits are also thought to have a genetic basis.  Genes can influence such things as whether we tend to be more anxious or relaxed and easygoing.  What part do you think your genetics play in who you are today?

Next, think about the environment in which you were brought up.  What was your family environment like?  How did your parents interact with you?  What about siblings and other family members?  What do you think you learned from peers and teachers?  What part do you think your environment played in forming your personality?

Please write 1-2 paragraphs describing how genetics and environment contributed to who you are today.   word count 300 words or more
