Ethics and Corporate Responsibility in the Workplace and the World

Assignment 3: Ethics and Corporate Responsibility in the Workplace and the World
Due Week 7 and worth 250 points

PharmaCARE (We CARE about YOUR health®) is one of the world’s most successful pharmaceutical companies, enjoying a reputation as a caring, ethical and well-run company that produces high-quality products that save millions of lives and enhance the quality of life for millions of others. The company offers free and discounted drugs to low-income consumers, has a foundation that sponsors healthcare educational programs and scholarships, and its CEO serves on the PhRMA board. PharmaCARE recently launched a new initiative, We CARE about YOUR world®, pledging its commitment to the environment through recycling, packaging changes and other green initiatives, despite the fact that the company’s lobbying efforts and PAC have successfully defeated environmental laws and regulations, including extension of the Superfund tax, which was created by Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).

Based in New Jersey, PharmaCARE maintains a large manufacturing facility in the African nation of Colberia, where the company has found several “healers” eager to freely share information about indigenous cures and an abundance of Colberians willing to work for $1.00 a day, harvesting plants by walking five (5) miles into and out of the jungle carrying baskets that, when full, weigh up to fifty (50) pounds. Due to the low standard of living in Colberia, much of the population lives in primitive huts with no electricity or running water. PharmaCARE’s executives, however, live in a luxury compound, complete with a swimming pool, tennis courts, and a golf course. PharmaCARE’s extensive activities in Colberia have destroyed habitat and endangered native species.

In preparation for this assignment, use the Internet or Strayer Library to research companies that have recently experienced negative consequences as a result of the company’s corporate activities.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

1.Describe the key characteristics of a stakeholder and determine all the stakeholders within the PharmaCARE scenario.
2.Analyze the human rights issues presented by PharmaCARE’s treatment of the Colberia’s indigenous population versus that of its executives. Recommend at least three (3) changes PharmaCARE can make to be more ethical going forward.
3.Assess PharmaCARE’s environmental initiative against the backdrop of its anti-environmental lobbying efforts and Colberian activities. Support the position.
4.Decide whether or not PharmaCARE’s actions with respect to the indigenous people of Colberia would be ethical in accordance with each of the following ethical theories:
a.Utilitarianism
b.Deontology
c.Virtue ethics
d.Ethics of care
e.Your own moral / ethical compass
5.Compare PharmaCARE’s actions with those of at least one (1) real-world company, whose corporate activities led to ethical, environmental, or workplace safety issues and financial loss. Analyze the similarities and differences between PharmaCARE and the company that you chose.
6.Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia is not an acceptable reference and proprietary Websites do not qualify as academic resources.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

•Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
•Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

•Analyze and evaluate laws that protect against discrimination in the workplace.
•Examine and assess employee rights to health and safety in the workplace.
•Analyze environmental protection laws and assess their impact on organizations.
•Use technology and information resources to research issues in law, ethics, and corporate governance.
•Write clearly and concisely about law, ethics, and corporate governance using proper writing mechanics.

Was Terry’s presentation appropriate for the audience?

You just had Terry, one of your team members from marketing, give a presentation to the engineering group about the new product and its importance to the company’s product line. The presentation covered the launch program, giving an emphasis on the milestones and dates. The purpose was to get the engineering group’s buy-in on the prototyping approach, dates, and final production dates. After 4 slides of a 35 slide presentation, Terry was bombarded with detailed engineering-related questions about the specifications and production issues. Terry, who wasn’t prepared for such questions, got aggravated and visibly frustrated, closed down the presentation and, said, “That’s it,” and left the meeting.

Go to the Discussion Board and provide a 3–5 paragraph description that answers the following questions:

  • Was Terry’s presentation appropriate for the audience?
  • How could Terry have better prepared for the presentation?
  • How could Terry have handled the questions?
  • What should the project manager do after Terry left the room?
  • What would you do differently to get the engineering group’s buy in?

Please I need references APA style (inside paragraphs and at least 3 ).  Please answer all questions.  No plagiarism.  I need an A on this assignment and I need 8 paragraphs.

HIS 100 Project 1: Topic Exploration Worksheet Guidelines and Rubric

Overview “If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.”

—Pearl Buck Your first project in this course is to complete a topic exploration worksheet. The work you do on this topic exploration worksheet will directly support your work on two other projects—a research plan and introduction and a multimedia presentation—that are due later in the course. One of the prime benefits of studying history is that it allows us to learn about who we are and where we came from. The people and events of the past can often shed light on the conditions and social norms of the present. Having historical awareness can inform various aspects of your life as well as future aspirations. Learning from past failures and successes can shape ideals and values for years to come. In this course, there are three longer-term projects that that will help you understand the fundamental processes and value of studying history. In the first project, you will choose a topic that is interesting to you from the options provided, complete a topic exploration worksheet that asks you to break down the event, investigate the types of research you might need to do to learn more about it, and develop research questions. Please note: You can choose a topic outside of the options provided with permission from your instructor. In the second project, you will use this worksheet to complete a research plan and introduction. You will choose one of your research questions and do some secondary source research (using the sources provided in the library guide or resources you locate yourself), speculate on primary-source needs, and use the information to write the introduction and thesis statement for a possible research paper. (The entire paper is not completed—just the introduction). In the third project, you will create a multimedia presentation that explores both major developments in historical inquiry as well as the value of examining history. This topic exploration worksheet assignment will assess the following course outcome, which you focused on throughout Theme 1:

 Develop questions about foundational historical events that inform personal assumptions, beliefs, and values using evidence from primary and secondary sources

Prompt Choose one of the provided topics that intrigues you. You can find more information about each topic in the library guide. Answer the questions in the Topic Exploration Worksheet template. You will do some preliminary research on your topic, as well as create a plan for what else you might need to learn. Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

I. Describe what you already knew about the topic prior to this course, based on your personal history or experiences. This may include assumptions, biases, beliefs, or values related to the topic. Be as detailed as possible.

II. What questions do you still have about the topic that you would like to explore? From these questions, identify two questions about the topic that you would like to explore further in this course. Be sure to address why these questions are important to you personally and to society.

III. Identify which secondary sources would help you address these questions. IV. Identify which primary sources would help you address these questions. V. Based on this research of your topic, detail what you have learned about it.

Project 1 Rubric Guidelines for Submission: Type your responses directly into the Topic Exploration Worksheet template and submit your completed worksheet to Brightspace for grading.
