Inside/Out Film
Answer only one of the four questions below and write 2-page paper with analysis.
1).   How do life events shape Riely’s self-image? (Definition: Self-image is your mental picture of yourself. It is the kind of person you perceive yourself to be. Self-image includes the roles you see yourself performing, the categories you place yourself within, the words you use to describe or identify yourself, and your understanding of how others see you. (Gamble and Gamble 2018)
2).  Choose your favorite optimist and pessimist from two of the following characters: Mom, Dad, Joy, Sadness, Riely, Bing-Bong, Fear, and Anger.  Write about how the characters you have chosen to focus on exhibit either optimism and pessimism thoughts and/or behaviors.
Unlike optimists, pessimists lack resilience and believe that bad events are their own fault, will last, and will undermine whatever they do. Rather than believe they can control their own destiny, pessimists believe that outside forces determine their fate. In effect, pessimists “can’t because they think they can’t,” while optimists “can because they think they can. (Definitions: If we are an optimist and suffer a defeat, we view it as a temporary setback brought about by circumstances, bad luck, or other people. Optimists are resilient and gritty; they do not view defeat as a result of some insurmountable innate inability. Psychologist Albert Bandura tells us that an optimistic belief in our own possibilities and competence endows us with feelings of self-efficacy. (Note: We are speaking about optimism, not unrealistic optimism based on overconfidence.) When we have strong feelings of self-efficacy, we are more persistent, less anxious, and less depressed. We don’t dwell on our inadequacy when something goes wrong; instead, we seek a solution. If we are persistent, we are apt to accomplish more. And as we do so, our belief in ourselves grows. Unlike optimists, pessimists lack resilience and believe that bad events are their own fault, will last, and will undermine whatever they do. Rather than believe they can control their own destiny, pessimists believe that outside forces determine their fate. In effect, pessimists “can’t because they think they can’t,” while optimists “can because they think they can”). (Gamble and Gamble 2018).
3).  How does Riely’s self-perception change throughout the film?
4).  When does Riely achieve self-understanding? How do you know?

Researching Majors/Training Program using SII:
Now that you have the Strong Interest Inventory results, this assignment is to help you use the information obtained from the Strong Interest test to begin narrow down academic and career pathways.  Part of determining your career path may include determining your academic training and developing an academic plan so you can learn the skills and knowledge to reach your goals.  In doing so, you are preparing and shaping your career decision.
Part I:  For the assignment, summarize your results from the Strong Interest Test and what learned from the Strong Inventory (1-page summary.)  Areas to include in your summary paper:
What career and academic paths stood out for you and what areas you want to highlight and further pursue?
Are the results congruent with your interests or are the results completely off? (For example, compare pages 3, 4 and 5 for the Strong)
Are there any surprises and suggestions you had not thought about?
Review the Basic Interest Scale – are the suggested areas accurate assessment of your interest or are you surprised by the list?  How do you suggest areas fit in your general self concept?
Related to the occupational Scales, what occupations do you think are best fit for you based on the recommended list?
As for Personal Style Scales, how does it describe your preferences on the 5 different dimensions?
As for college majors, what is the test suggesting you should be exploring in college?
What activities should you be engaged in on campus?
What other information is missing for you?
Part II:  Research two academic major / career training programs that are of interest and that is supported by the career testing.  Write a 2 page typed doubled spaced paper detailing what you found about the major or training program.  Extra 5 credits will be awarded to students who meet with an advisor before Dec 12 to develop an educational plan with an academic advisor.   For students who may not be at a place to develop an educational plan, meet with a Career Specialist at OCE&E or the class instructor for the extra credit opportunity.
Important information to consider in your paper:
Review your Highest Basic Interest Scales and select 2 possible majors that fit your interest profile.
Review your Occupational Scales and identify 2 possible career paths that fit the majors / career training
Through research, identify the type of classes that fit the two majors or training programs and identify possible degrees for the associated career paths.
As you review the classes, identify your strengths in the coursework and assess possible barriers you may encounter in completing the classes and degree? For example, how likely do you believe you will be successful in the classes? Why? What are the possible barriers you anticipate?
Describe how the majors and careers fit in your self-concept and career identity – highlight values and attributes that fit your self-concept.
Identify job opportunities are there in your field of interest? What is the job outlook?
If you are in a transfer program, what other institutions offer your academic program or degree? What colleges or Universities are you interested in transferring?  Do they have your major of interest?  Looking at the courses you have taken or will take, are there major pre-reqs you need to be aware of and other admission information to note?
What entry level jobs are available for your field of interest? What possible internship opportunities are available to you?

#InHouseDiscussions (worth 4 point each [up to 20 points total]): For these assignments I would ask that you find an article (academic journal, news, personal interview, video, etc.) that pertains directly to the class readings (and/or lectures up to that point) due for that class period. Think of this is a shared ‘current events’ type of assignment. What we are interested in is content that currently reflects the field of study for this particular course. A total of 5 of our class periods will consist of us discussing your findings for half of the class period. Voluntarily, students will be encouraged to share their findings with the rest of the class and field questions as they arise during that time.
Logistics wise, please write a half page single-spaced summary of the chosen article, why it speaks to our course content to date, and a link to your chosen piece. #InHouseDiscussion’s are simply Pass/Fail. Either you do them or you don’t. They must be turned in as a (one page) hard copy to Jeremy at the end of the class period the day they are due. Please don’t forget to add your name and date at the top. Furthermore, late #InHouseDiscussion write-ups will not be accepted under any circumstances shy of a doctor’s note or an academic accommodation. Emailing the assignment will not be accepted as well; hard copies only.

The essay topic is ” People have stopped using their brains creatively due to the options that technology offer”

This essay should be between 900 and  words, excluding the required annotated bibliography.
First, you will choose a topic of interest that has at least two opposing sides (please do not reuse your Toulmin essay topic). Then, you need to research that topic in order to specify the topic’s scope, so it can be easily discussed in 900 word essay.
This essay must include a minimum of five sources.  Three should be peer-reviewed
http://youtu.be/rOCQZ7QnoN0. You may use eBooks; however, as discussed in your textbook, books generally are not as current as peer-reviewed articles.  You may also use primary sources (interviews, statistics, etc); however, these primary sources should be obtained from experts within that field.  If you cannot find strong sources for your chosen topic, then change your topic.
Make sure to include the following sections in your essay:
an introduction and claim,
background,
body,
and a conclusion.
Within the body of your essay, make sure to include the following in any order:
The background for your chosen topic,
the opposition – use an academic tone, and do not show bias,
the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents’ claims,
scholarly research,
your claim — use an academic tone, and do not show bias,
discuss the warrants for your claim and the opposition in order to find the common ground,
and show the common ground between your opponents’ claim and your claim.
The Annotated Bibliography
An annotated Bibliography (AB) is due with your Rogerian essay. Using the MLA guide, list each source as it will appear on the Works Cited page of your essay. Summarize each source in two or three grammatically-correct  sentences. These short summaries are the “annotations.”
The following is a sample of an “annotated bibliography.”
Annotated Bibliography (Centered)
Clark, Irene L. The Genre of Argument. Fort Worth, TX: Harcourt Brace, 1998. Print.
Clark’s textbook identifies the major steps to developing a well-researched and well-written argumentative essay. Professional essays are included in the text as models.
Ward, Russ. Logical Argument in the Research Paper. Fort Worth, TX: Harcourt Brace, 1997. Print.
Augmenting the steps to writing an argumentative research paper is information about proper documentation. The Rogerian System, an important aspect of a well-planned paper, should be studied carefully.
